For those who are unaware of Nicolas Cage’s Hollywood legacy, the actor once played himself in a 2022 movie – The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Although most actors play themselves when it comes to autobiographies or documentaries, Cage apparently played himself in a commercial film, alongside Pedro Pascal.

Considering Nicolas Cage’s role in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent an unconventional one, screenwriter Kevin Etten revealed that the filmmakers had considered other actors for the role, in case Cage refused. Malaga — Opening last Friday with “Dragonkeeper,” also in competition, Spain’s Malaga Festival, its biggest dedicated event for movies from Spain and Latin America, is studded by latest films by Isaki Lacuesta – “Saturn Return,” reportedly fun, broad audience and radical – David Trueba – “The Good Man,” small scale but almost certainly ingratiating – and Antonio Chavarrías’ “Holy Mother,” about an extraordinary real life female figure in Spain’s 9th century Reconquista.
Also in the running is “Rest in Peace,” from notable Argentine writer-director Sebastián Borensztein (“Chinese Takeaway”).
All are front-runners for some kind of award next Saturday. Prominent also is a bevy of first or second features, featuring from Spain three titles from women directors – gender abuse drama “The Snows,” “Nina,” reportedly a Western set in a northern Spanish town, and tragi-comedy “We Treat Women Too Well” – plus a clutch of debuts from Latin America.

Paul King’s road to Wonka began with a tough choice between marmalade and chocolate.
After two beloved films about a marmalade-loving bear named Paddington, King opted to take on a prequel to Mel Stuart’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) instead of completing a Paddington trilogy of sorts. With Paddington having such extensive source material, King believes that the bear’s story wouldn’t necessarily feel complete after three films, so he took his feel-good sensibilities to the world that Roald Dahl originated in the 1964 children’s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“It was the right thing to do,” King tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And because there’s so much Paddington source material, you could make 50 Paddington movies. I’d be a hundred years old and still doing Paddington. If you could only make two or three films [out of the source material], then it might’ve been different. But by the end of the second film,...

For three decades, the Oldenburg Film Festival has been devoted to celebrating independent cinema outside the mainstream of both Hollywood and the international art-house market.

Here are five can’t-miss movies from the 2023 crop.
The Wait The Wait
After the success of his debut film Before the Fall (2008), Spanish director Javier Gutiérrez followed Hollywood’s call and directed Rings (2017), the third entry in The Ring horror franchise. Despite grossing $83 million at the box office, the film was considered a flop, and Gutiérrez returned to Spain, spending six years developing his third feature, which will have its world premiere in Oldenburg. The Academy Awards are this Sunday and it’s actually been a great year for film and particularly actors. So many of them have been recognized with nominations or wins, between the Oscars and the SAG Awards, not to mention BAFTA, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, Gotham and Independent Spirit Awards.
But with every great performance honored by a major group, there are so many more that are deserving, but seem to elude awards recognition. So going off the four existing acting categories, I wanted to suggest some other names from the year 2022 that deserve a look. And the best part is, they’re all currently available to stream so you can check them out yourself.

Miguel Herrán as Manuel and Javier Gutiérrez as Pino in Prison 77
A taut drama exploring what life was like inside Spanish penitentiaries in the years just after the fall of the Franco regime, Prison 77 screened at the 2023 Glasgow Film Festival. Director Alberto Rodríguez was keen to tell the story behind it. Readers should be aware that there are some spoilers here, but nothing that detracts from the tension in a film where the fate of the central characters remains uncertain until the very last moment.
Jennie Kermode: What made you want to make a film on this subject, and how closely did you stick to real events?

In Tom Gormican's 2022 film "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," Pedro Pascal plays Javi Gutierrez, a fun-loving playboy billionaire living in Majorca, Spain. Javi is a huge fan of actor Nicolas Cage and hires him to hang out for a weekend. Cage, playing himself, cautiously accepts the offer, having found himself in a bit of a creative rut; a younger version of Cage appears in visions to lambaste his older self that he is no longer the massive movie star he once was. Javi will spend a great deal of time heaping praise on Cage and eventually reveals that he has a secret collectibles vault full of Cage-related memorabilia. Cage, meanwhile, will be secretly approached by the CIA, and told that Javi is actually a dangerous arms dealer that might be involved in an ongoing kidnapping plot. The film is bright, whimsical, and enjoyable. Cage, as he always does,...

In his latest video, Kev reviews the new Nicholas Cage flick The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Check out our written review of the film right here.
Unfortunately, Hollywood mega-star Nicolas Cage, is with his back to the wall. Drowning in debt after an ugly divorce, Nick is willing to try everything to get his career back on track, including appearing at a one-off, ludicrously well-paid event for Spanish olive-oil magnate and number one Nicolas Cage fan Javi Gutierrez in sunny Mallorca. Instead, undercover CIA agents, an abduction right under everyone’s nose, and an unwanted, peril-laden mission spell trouble for everyone involved, dragging Cage into a frantic adventure. And just like the movies, the guns have the final say. Can a lifetime of experience in killer one-liners and exciting climactic endings save the guy from The Croods: A New Age (2020)?...

In yet another sign of explosive growth on Spain’s drama scene, Amazon Prime Video has unveiled four new Amazon Original series or movies tapping the large talents of some of its most successful comedy directors, producers, novelists and drama series creators.
In a sign of Amazon Studios’ hiked ambitions, the productions were described by Georgia Brown, Amazon’s head of European Originals, as “local stories that resonate with local audiences and have a global impact.” In the past, Amazon has stressed more the need for the former.
Also updating Spanish journalists in Madrid on Wednesday morning on progress on the already announced “Sin Huellas” and “Un asunto privado,” Prime Video’s new slate shows it enrolling some of the biggest stars in Spain, led by “Below Zero’s” Javier Gutiérrez and Carmen Machi.

Already selected as this year’s Spanish Best International Feature Film submission for the Oscars, Fernando León de Aranoa’s dark workplace comedy “The Good Boss,” starring Javier Bardem, has set a new record for most Spanish Academy Goya Award nominations with 20, ahead of Icíar Bollaín’s standout Basque drama “Maixabel” with 14 and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” which secured eight.
The 20 nominations include: Best picture, director, original screenplay, original music, lead actor, three nominations for supporting actor, supporting actress, two nominations for best new male actor and one for best new female actor, production design, cinematography, editing, art direction, costume design, makeup, sound design and special effects. It’s a total which breaks an almost 30-year-old record held by Imanol Uribe’s “Numbered Days,” which received 19 nominations in 1994.
León’s latest, produced by The Mediapro Studio and Reposado PC, is a return to a fruitful partnership between the director and his leading man.

After trying to conceive a child with his wife Adela (Patricia López Arnaiz) for almost as long, they’ve yet to succeed. As a result, Javier can’t help but see a new resident as a means to an end wherein both parties can benefit. Irene (Irene Virgüez) is 14, pregnant, and in love with Osman (Sofian El Benaissati), a boy currently jailed for a violent offense. Not knowing what to do, the teen leans towards abortion before Javier intervenes. He proposes she carry to term, give him the baby, and walk away free with enough money to go anywhere. She agrees.

Opening up what could be a rich vein in Spanish movies coming onto the open market, Film Factory Entertainment has acquired world sales rights outside Spain to “Modelo 77,” the next film by Alberto Rodríguez, director of “Marshland” and “The Plague.”
A potential jewel in Spanish cinema’s 2022 crown, “Modelo 77” is produced by Spanish pay TV/VOD giant Movistar Plus and Madrid-based Atípica Films, Rodríguez’s career-long producer. It raises the large question of whether “Modelo 77” will mark a fully-fledged embarkment by Movistar Plus into regular movie co-production with Spain’s film industry.
Few titles, if that were to happen, will tick more boxes than Rodríguez’s “Modelo 77,” which Film Factory will bring onto the open market at this week’s Toronto Festival.
A penitentiary drama-thriller feature directed by Alberto Rodríguez and written by Rafael Cobos and the director, the creative powerhouses behind “Marshland” and Movistar Plus banner series “The Plague,...

Miguel Herrán, who plays Aníbal “Río” Cortés in “Money Heist” and Christian Varela in “Elite,” will star with “Below Zero” lead Javier Gutiérrez in “Modelo 77,” produced by Movistar Plus and Madrid-based Atípica Films.
The feature film will be released in Spanish cinema theaters by Buena Vista Intl. before screening in exclusivity on Movistar Plus.
Directed by Alberto Rodríguez and written by Rafael Cobos and Rodríguez, the creative powerhouses behind Movistar Plus banner series “The Plague,” the movie sees Movistar Plus maintaining in a movie a key talent relationship forged by a drama series. As competition for top talent becomes the key battleground between pay TV operators and platforms the world over, that looks like a crucial coup.

Photo: 'Below Zero'/Netflix Violence and suspense are the name of the game in the new Spanish Netflix original film ‘Below Zero’, or ‘Bajocero’, the second feature-length directorial outing from co-scriptwriter Lluís Quílez. In the film, a National Police Corps officer named Martín (Javier Gutiérrez) transfers to a new precinct and his first assignment is to drive a prisoner transport truck in the dead of night. Gutiérrez’s starring role in ‘Below Zero’ marks his fourth Netflix film, after ‘The Motive’, ‘Mirage’, and ‘The Occupant’. Martín’s new partner Montesinos (Isak Férriz), a rule-bender, who for instance likes wearing an earring even though it’s not allowed, explains to Martín that the time of the transfer is random and last minute so that everything is safer and more discreet. For the same reasons, they can’t take their cellphones with them. A prisoner transfer in the middle of the night?...

"You did something, and we're not going to pay for it." Netflix has revealed an official US trailer for Below Zero, an action thriller from Catalonian filmmaker Lluís Quílez (Out of the Dark). In the middle of a foggy, cold night, a prison van carrying convicts is assaulted. The driver, Martin, will need to defend himself from those inside and those outside if he wants to make it out alive. This reminded me of Con Air at first glance, but with a big prison bus driving through winter in Spain. The film's cast includes Javier Gutiérrez, Àlex Monner, Patrick Criado, Édgar Vittorino, Karra Elejalde, Florin Opritescu, Luis Callejo, and Isak Férriz. This actually looks like an intense, chilly thriller to enjoy at home this winter. Fire it up below. Here's the official trailer (+ two Spanish posters) for Lluís Quílez's Below Zero, direct from YouTube: On a lonely road, a prison transport is brutally assaulted.

Madrid — Spain’s Malaga Festival, the country’s biggest festival dedicated to Spanish and Latin American films and TV, has been postponed, the Malaga Town Hall announced Tuesday.
No new date has been suggested for the event. Via Twitter, Municipal authorities adduced “uncertainty generated by the evolution of coronavirus” as the reason for the postponement.
“Although health authorities have not expressly banned the Festival from taking place, their recommendation to avoid traveling within Spain makes it difficult for the festival to take place normally,” the Town Hall added.
Spain’s Ministry of Health advised Spaniards on Monday against traveling in Spain. The 23rd Malaga Festival was due to open in three days time, running March 13-22.
The postponement is a blow to Spain’s film and TV industry which has increasingly turned to the Malaga Festival as a platform for new works from established talent and Germany but trailing Italy’s 9,172, according to The Lancet.

While submitting an Asghar Farhadi feature to the Oscar’s foreign film category might be considered a no-brainer, Spain chose differently, passing over two-time Oscar winner’s Cannes Film Festival opener Everybody Knows, which was produced with the country’s money and starred two Oscar-winning national treasures Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, and selected filmmaker Javier Fesser’s heart-warming comedy-drama and local box office hit Champions. To date in Spain this year, it’s the highest grossing local Spanish film with $23M, and it leaves audiences in tears.
In the movie, Spain’s leading man Javier Gutiérrez plays cocky big league assistant basketball coach Marco Montes who assaults his colleague during a televised game. He’s fired, but life gets worse: Drunk, he front-ends his vehicle into a police car. Life is already bad as he’s on the outs with his wife Sonia (Athenea Mata). In receiving a community...

Madrid — Spain’s biggest national box office hit of the year, “Campeones” (Champions), has been selected by the Spain’s Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences as the country’s submission for a foreign-language Academy Award.
Grossing €18.5 million ($$21.4 million) in Spain for Universal Pictures Intl. Spain, “Campeones” beat out two other contenders in a submission shortlist: Ashgar Farhadi’s Cannes Festival opening film “Everybody Knows,” starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, which was shot in Spain and produced out of Spain, like “Champions,” by Spain’s Morena Films; and Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi “Handía,” a flagship production of the building Basque cinema which won a Special Jury Prize at last September’s San Sebastian festival and then 10 Goya Academy Awards this January.
On paper, “Campeones” could have disappeared without trace at the Spanish box office, taking a difficult subject – intellectual discapacity – and rolling it into a drama-comedy about...

Cannes — John Malkovich and Russell Smith’s L.A.-based Mr. Mudd has boarded “Brando,” the next film from Spain’s Manuel Martín Cuenca, a director who has grown into one of Spain’s preeminent auteurs.
Gonzalo Sálazar-Simpson’s Madrid-based production house Lazona Films and Martín Cuenca’s own label La Loma Blanca produce the project from Spain. Julio and Carlos Fernández’s Spanish mini-major Filmax will distribute in Spain a project which marks maybe Martín Cuenca’s most international yet: an English-language road movie described as being “in the best traditions of U.S. independent cinema,” Filmax said in a statement Wednesday.
Also handling international sales on “Brando,” Filmax has been introducing the title to buyers at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“This is my most personal and ambitious project,” said Martín Cuenca. He added that the film “will allow me to explore a different kind of love...
