- Won the 1967 24 Hours of LeMans with A.J. Foyt.
- Was the only American driver to win a Formula 1 race in a car of his own design (Eagle-Weslake) at the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix.

- He won the 1975 Indianapolis 500 as a team owner in 1975 with driver Bobby Unser.

- Owned his own racing team, All-American Racers (Anglo American Racers) for several years.
- Inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2007.
- He began at Le Mans in 1968 the practice of popping a champagne bottle and spraying the contents around as part of his winning celebration.
