“This show was an idea that started before I was ever nominated for any Tony,” says Kelli O’Hara about her role of Kirsten in “Days of Wine and Roses” that has earned her the eighth Tony Award nomination of her career. The idea to musicalize the 1962 film of the same name came from the actress, when she approached composer Adam Guettel during “the very first workshop of ‘Light in the Piazza’” about writing the score. She shares, “In a way, this particular role and piece have been in my mind along with every other role I’ve played since that time… so that makes it the most special to me.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Though it might seem counterintuitive to adapt “Days of Wine and Roses” to the stage as a musical instead of a play, O’Hara said it made perfect sense because she tells “stories so...

I thought I was safe to boldly pronounce my initial 2024 Tony Awards predictions, but then Sufjan Stevens appeared to stomp all over them. As David Buchanan and I convened to discuss where we thought the musical nominations were headed this season, news broke that Off-Broadway’s dreamy dance show “Illinoise” will transfer to the St. James Theatre just in time to compete at this year’s ceremony. The show, based on Stevens’ seminal album, has thrown our Tony predictions into disarray. Watch our full video slugfest above.
“Illinoise” marks the 15th new musical of the 2023-2024 season. That’s more new tuners than any Broadway season since 1975-1976. Theatergoers this year are indeed spoiled with a glut of new shows, but predicting the coveted Best Musical category has become a titanic task.

Days of Wine and Roses, the critically acclaimed musical adaptation of the 1962 film, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, March 31, just about two months after its January 28 opening night.
The production becomes the third in recent weeks to announce that it would vacate the Broadway boards just as the industry gears up for one of the busiest springs in memory. Spamalot, which opened last November, announced yesterday that it would close Sunday, April 7, while A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical will play its final performance on Sunday, June 30; the production opened December 4, 2022.
All three of the soon-to-close shows have been struggling at the box office in recent weeks. Last week, Days of Wine and Roses, with a book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, grossed just $364,686, filling only 55% of seats at Broadway’s Studio 54.

The gripping new Broadway rendition of Blake Edwards‘ 1962 film Days of Wine and Roses wastes no time delving into the destructive impact of alcoholism on the marriage of characters Kirsten and Joe Clay.
Directed by Michael Greif, the production is infused with heartache and hangovers and is well worth the discomfort it causes in one’s seat.
After twenty-one years in the making, this rendition of the classic tale stars Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. The songbook, music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, are composed of haunting minor keys and an overtone of darkness that is rarely seen in Broadway’s traditional spectacles. The script and songs feature a significant amount of operatic-style singing and speaking that establishes a melancholic tone.
The story follows Joe (Brian D’Arcy James), a Korean War veteran turned PR dynamo, who exudes mid-century machismo and meets Kirsten (Kelli O’Hara) at a work event. In the beginning,...

Sixty-two years after the release of the film “Days of Wine and Roses,” the Oscar-winning movie by writer J.P. Miller and director Blake Edwards, a musical adaptation has opened on Broadway with a score by Adam Guettel. The story of two characters brought together and torn asunder by alcohol stars Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James in the roles played in the movie by Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon. The production opened at Studio 54 on Jan. 28.
In addition to reuniting Guettel and O’Hara, who collaborated on “The Light in the Piazza,” the librettist Craig Lucas from that musical contributed the book for this new venture. The ensemble cast includes Tabitha Lawing and Byron Jennings in pivotal roles under the helm of director Michael Greif.

André Bishop will step down from his role as producing artistic director of Lincoln Center Theater next year, after having worked at the nonprofit theater company for 33 years.
Bishop will depart at the end of the theater’s 2024-2025 season and the board of Lincoln Center Theater will launch a search for his successor “in due course.” The move from Bishop, who has held the position of producing artistic director at the Lincoln Center theater since July 2013, after serving as artistic director since January 1992, marks the latest shake-up in Broadway’s nonprofit realm, which consists of four theater companies.
On Wednesday, Second Stage founder Carole Rothman announced she would leave the company after 45 years. Longtime Roundabout Theatre Company CEO and Artistic Director Todd Haimes died in April, and Manhattan Theatre Club Executive Producer Barry Grove announced his departure in January after 48 years with the organization.

The Best Original Score prize is always one of the most coveted prizes at the Tony Awards. This year, the race is also one of the most competitive, pitting Michael R. Jackson’s music and lyrics for “A Strange Loop” against Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ work for “Six: The Musical.” In recent weeks, “A Strange Loop” has pulled ahead of “Six” in our combined odds as the clear frontrunner for Best Musical, so does that mean it has an edge in the contest for score as well? How often do the two awards go hand in hand?
Watch our exclusive video interview with Tony nominee L Morgan Lee (‘A Strange Loop’)
Although it might seem intuitive that the show crowned Best Musical would also take the prize for Best Score, recent history shows how the awards often diverge. Since 2000, only 13 prize-winning shows have also won for their score, which...

Update, with Scott Rudin quote, additional background Broadway doesn’t need Damon Runyon to prove yet again there’s no such thing as a sure bet: The To Kill A Mockingbird snub from the Tony Awards’ best play category today was easily the most surprising and confounding element of today’s nomination announcements.
“I don’t have an explanation for it,” Mockingbird director Bartlett Sher told Deadline from Berlin, where he’s directing an opera. Sher was nominated in the directing category, and cast members Jeff Daniels, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Gideon Glick got nominations. Filling out the Mockingbird’s total of nine nomations are Adam Guettel (original score); Miriam Buether (scenic design); Ann Roth (costume design); Jennifer Tipton (lighting design); and Scott Lehrer (sound design).
But not Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation, despite massive press attention, public debate, box office heat and critical praise.

Filling out the Mockingbird’s total of nine nomations are Adam Guettel (original score); Miriam Buether (scenic design); Ann Roth (costume design); Jennifer Tipton (lighting design); and Scott Lehrer (sound design).
But not Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation, despite massive press attention, public debate, box office heat and critical praise.

Refresh for updates The lush, very-downtown musical Hadestown topped the Tony Awards nominations list with 14, with the more traditional jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud coming in at second with 12, a one-two punch as clear a sign as any that Tony voters are in a very expansive mood this year.
At #3, Tootsie has 11 nominations; The Ferryman 9 and Beetlejuice 8.
But the big surprise were the no-votes in the Best Play category for both To Kill A Mockingbird and Network, particularly for Aaron Sorkin’s gloriously reviewed and wildly popular adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel. That omission might be the single biggest Tony snub in years, if not decades.
Deadline will examine that omission and other surprises in a complete analysis of the Tony nominations by Deadline theater critic Greg Evans, coming shortly. Check back soon.

Disney’s The Princess Bride has been flirting with Broadway for years, but the ever popular tale seems to be taking another step down – or at least toward – the aisle with the putting in place of a new creative team: composer and lyricist David Yazbek and a book writers Bob Martin and Rick Elice.
Disney Theatrical Productions confirmed today that the team has been recruited, but few other details – when, where, who else – were forthcoming about a stage adaptation for the 1987 Rob Reiner movie.
Yazbek is a Tony winner for The Band’s Visit, the Broadway hit now in its final stretch (closing date April 7), and his Tootsie is currently in previews at Broadway’s Marquis for an April 23 opening. Both Martin and Elice have shows currently on Broadway: Martin’s The Prom and Elice’s The Cher Show.

I came to Olivia de Havilland's work in Light in the Piazza thanks to a (still enduring) obsession with the Adam Guettel musical, both adapted from Elizabeth Spencer's novella. While it's not surprising that the film hasn't endured (it lacks the stage version's soaring emotional heights), de Havilland's performance deserves a better place in her legacy. Even with a youthful love story as its center and gorgeous Florence as backdrop, you can't take your eyes off of the concerned mother - and not just because she spends the entire film drenched in custom Christian Dior!
As Meg Johnson, de Havilland is spending a holiday with her young daughter Clara, who falls in love with a charming Italian boy. The...

Ethel Merman and Mary Martin never tried this. Tony winners Kelli O’Hara and Victoria Clark put aside their usual show tunes to sing Henry Purcell’s 17th Century opera, “Dido & Aeneas,” presented Thursday and Friday by Master Voices at the New York City Center. Anyone who saw O’Hara and Clark together in Adam Guettel’s great musical “The Light in the Piazza” in 2005 won’t be surprised that they can sing opera. How well O’Hara sings baroque arias, however, is astounding. All the singers here are mic’d for the cavernous City Center, but it’s doubtful...

Clark directs The Light in the Piazza, the show for which she picked up a Tony Award in 2005, running through November 8 at the Loretto Theatre at The Sheen Center. The Light in the Piazza, by Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas, is based on the novella of the same name by Elizabeth Spencer. Taking place in Italy in the late summer of 1953, it is the story of an American woman Margaret Johnson, who travels to Florence with her daughter Clara, who falls in love with a young Florentine man. As details emerge about Clara's past, their trip turns out to be very much a romantic and psychological journey as Margaret must decide what is best for her daughter, her family, and for herself. There are two upcoming movie musicals that, for a long time, I've wanted to make into motion pictures, should someone with money be willing to give me the funds to make them -- Into The Woods and The Last 5 Years. I'm both nervous and excited to see how directors Rob Marshall and Richard Lagravenese, respectfully, have interpreted the material I hold so close to my heart. I am especially nervous for Into The Woods, given Marshall's less than impressive track record. If someone is going to screw up something I cherish, it should be me. Of course, there are far more than two musicals I have a deep connection to. Some have already been made into films, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Les Miserables, but there is a vast collection of musicals I have thought could make fantastic films, but have never been made.
