One of the first things you’ll notice about Shady Grove is the unevenness of the performances. Niki McElroy, who plays newly pregnant Shaina, and Juhahn Jones, who plays her friend Eli, seem to be acting in completely different styles. Todd Anthony, as her partner Mark, doesn’t register much of a presence – at any rate, she and he don’t seem to have much chemistry, even in their (discreetly shot) shower sex scene. As the story unfolds, however, this comes to seem like less of a bug and more of a feature. Shaina is on a very different trajectory from her two companions – much more so than they realise.
is this because of the pregnancy? Perhaps not. There are indications that she was drifting away from Mark before she knew about it. Whilst mark is superficially understanding about an incident which happened at that time, he’s suspicious about her now,...

In the film…
“A young couple, Shaina and Mark, attend a music festival with their best friend Elijah on their annual pilgrimage away from their work-heavy city lives. It’s also something of a farewell trip for the couple because they are expecting, though they haven’t told Elijah, yet. Their plan is to tell him at the beautiful cabin they found on a vacation rental app.
“Upon arrival the host is nowhere to be found, but she has left instructions for them on the door along with a gift basket of wine. It’s going to be impossible to gauge exactly how many people showed up for the hundreds of women’s marches that were held across the world on Saturday. But aerials views shared to social media help grasp just how expansive the protest efforts were.
What began as a simple Facebook invitation to protest the election of president Donald Trump turned into a global movement on Saturday, as millions of women (and men) across the world took to the streets in solidarity.
Their signature event was the Women’s March on Washington, D.C., where than 500,000 people were expected to participate.

Warning: Do not keep reading if you haven't watched the first nine episodes of "House of Cards" Season 2. Up next, "Chapter 22."
Where we are:
There are two big plotlines this episode, both stemming from Raymond Tusk getting back at Frank Underwood for ruining his rare earth refinery with Xander Feng: Claire's affair and Freddy's rib shack.
For Claire, she's ready to do battle. She tells Adam Galloway to deny, deny, deny, which he does. Then she goes on the air in a press conference to say the picture in the D.C. Daily is one she and Frank commissioned Galloway to take of her in their home.
Galloway is irritated that she didn't tell him the plan, but she says if their stories were too coordinated, the press would smell a rat. And she's right. Claire tells Adam to go back to the press, tell them he lied because he...

Washington, Nov. 4: Dogfish Head, a Delaware-based brewing company, has turned the bus-cum-restaurant idea of a design student into reality.
The Dogfish Head Ale Bus was first conceptualized by Sam Petrella, 25, for a capstone program at the Universities at Shady Grove, the Washington Post reported.
Joe Hospital, a founder of Dogfish Ale House, said that his company was looking to expand their business, but they needed something new that also stayed true to the Dogfish brand and Petrella's rolling pub was just the thing they needed.
Petrella spent three months and tens of thousands of dollars to transform a former D.C. school bus into a mini pub.
Petrella said that he really wanted the bus, which seats up.

With ten albums over almost 20 years, the Austin band The Gourds has been well established on the local scene with their raucous live performances. Kevin Russell formed the band in 1994 with fellow songwriter Jimmy Smith, and Claude Bernard on accordion, guitar and keyboards -- Keith Langford later joined the band on drums. It was the viral sensation of their cover of "Gin and Juice" that garnered them national attention, and has become their band's version of "Freebird" as the most requested song. Longtime fans of the band know that the magic of The Gourds truly comes from the communal live experience, whether witnessed at a jam-packed Thursday night show at Shady Grove or the memorable SXSW 2005 free show at Auditorium Shores with a sea of over 20,000 people.

Who Bombed Judi Bari? is one of the most extraordinary documentaries -- actually one of the most extraordinary films -- I have ever seen. It accomplishes something extremely out-of-the-ordinary: It not only substantially and vividly makes its point about environmental issues and the sizable contribution environmental activist Judi Bari made during her lifetime, but as it progresses it enters the domain of the "transcendental," the rarest of cinematic feats.
Who Bombed Judi Bari? is much, much more than an environmental activist documentary. Directed and edited by Mary Liz Thomson, and produced by Darryl Cherney (who endured the bombing and its aftereffects alongside Judi), it creates an intense, often amusing, wrenching, and ultimately extraordinarily inspiring cinematic experience.
Compounding its excellence is that it speaks to this moment in the history of the U.S. and the world. Though the film centers on the life of environmental activist Judi Bari (from 1990 until...

Raleigh, N.C. — Doc Watson, the blind Grammy-award winning folk musician whose mountain-rooted sound was embraced by generations and whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world, died Tuesday at a North Carolina hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his manager. He was 89.
Watson died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was hospitalized recently after falling at his home in Deep Gap, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He underwent abdominal surgery while in the hospital and had been in critical condition for several days.
Arthel "Doc" Watson's mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own grandson, who performed with him.

The 33rd edition of the Pia festival wrapped on Friday, September 30. A week and an half in the rather dowdy National Film Theatre saw a slew of hipsters, film students, pedants, critics and film fans making their annual pilgrimage to check out the newest of the new – with hopes of discovering the newest and best of the Japanese film scene. Pia has played host to the first-time efforts of such folks as enfant terrible Sono Shion as well as the more gentle international festival favorite, Naomi Kawase. Recently they’ve been nurturing the career of whipsmart indie wunderkind, Yuya Ishii. This year’s festival opened with the Japanese premiere of his newest feature, Mitsuko Delivers. Like the best of Ishii’s work Mitsuko Delivers delivers a smart social satire couched in situation comedy. Riisa Naka handily plays a very pregnant Mitsuko, who embarks not only on controlling her own life,...

Writer-director Jason Daly is now in post-production on this thriller starring Lorena King, Victor Gonzalez, Cecilia Huete and Adam Leadbeater. The story is set against the backdrop of small town Shady Grove where the legend of "Shane", a boy who was tortured and chained to a tree as a youngster, spooks the locals. Damaged and broken, he wanders those woods in search of blood, with his trademark chain fused to his wrist. Despite years of tales and urban myths, no proof of his existence has ever been discovered, until five unsuspecting teens reveal the truth on an ill-fated trip.

Austin filmmaker Amy Grappell received the Short Film Jury Award for the Documentary Short category for Quadrangle, an unconventional documentary about two "conventional" couples that swapped partners and lived in a group marriage in the early 70s. She also took home the SXSW Wholphin Award. Quadrangle previously received an honorable mention award after its premiere at Sundance this year, and has screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
Grappell has been active in the Austin film community over the last decade as a director, writer, producer, actress and casting director. She serves on the Austin Film Society's "Docs in Progress" committee and received an Afs Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund grant in 2009 for Quadrangle. Appalachian treasure sees light of day
Nimrod Workman sounds close to death, but in 1982, when folk historian Mike Seeger (half-brother of Pete) sat with the then 87-year-old to collect these rustic songs and stories, the entertainer and former coal miner had twelve years yet to go. His voice—weathered, strained and wavering perpetually between a moan and an ecstatic bleat—is the staggering centerpiece of these sparse a capella recordings. On “Coal Black Mining Blues,” an original, Workman mourns the coal mine that employed him for 42 years but denied responsibility for his black lung. “Oh Death” is a desperate negotiation with the Dark Angel himself, and even the traditionally spry “Shady Grove” is tinged with morbid portent. Workman’s toothlessness is audible; so, too, is the spittle on the puckered socket of his mouth. Listen closely and you can even hear his rocking chair—or perhaps his bones—creaking between the lines.
