"At least I'm trying to be a good person." "Rich people are unreasonable." Parkland Pictures has unveiled the official UK trailer for a dark comedy film called The Trouble with Jessica, arriving in UK cinemas this April. Though there's still no US date yet. Winner of the Jury Prize & Audience Award at Dinard Film Festival 2023. This reminds me of the original Death at a Funeral comedy, and it even also co-stars Alan Tudyk just like that one. Sarah and Tom are in deep financial trouble. Their situation takes a terrifying nosedive with the shocking behavior of uninvited dinner guest, Jessica. Just when they think they can sell their stylish London home to the right buyer, Jessica's rash decision leaves them in even more of a situation than before. The Trouble with Jessica ensemble cast features Shirley Henderson, Alan Tudyk, Rufus Sewell, Olivia Williams, Sylvester Groth, Anne Reid, and Indira Varma as the titular Jessica.

It flew under the radar that Ildikó Enyedi had suited a role for Tony Leung in her new feature, Silent Friend, which “tells three stories connected to a tree over a period of more than 100 years” and rather ambitiously centers on “radical shifts in human perception of plants, animals and humans.” Last summer’s news offered an April 2024 start date, and––whatever radio silence since––things appear on-track. A press release from German superentity Pandora Film announces a production commencement for next month with Léa Seydoux starring alongside Luna Wedler, Enzo Brumm, and Sylvester Groth.
Variety’s initial story revealed Leung will play “a renowned neuroscientist traveling from his hometown of Hong Kong to the Marburg Faculty”; no word yet of how Seydoux or her co-stars fit in, but Pandora’s official synopsis suggests they, sadly, won’t intersect. We should know more soon: as cameras roll next month, so shooting finishes in May,...

The final season of the Deutschland spy series begins with an ending. In the opening episode of Deutschland 89, the Berlin Wall falls, giving East German citizens free movement to West Germany and beyond for the first time in decades. What follows in the eight-episode final season is a social study in how different people react when their reality is suddenly and fundamentally altered. In the year 2020, as the world continues to reel from the seismic changes Covid-19 has wrought, it’s an unexpectedly relatable experience.
“Deutschland 89 is really about how people have to reinvent themselves during a crisis,” says Deutschland series co-creator Joerg Winger. “So I think, in that way, it does reflect today, but that was not intentional.”
From the beginning, the Deutschland series—which launched in 2015 with Deutschland 83, continued in 2018 with Deutschland 86, and just concluded with Deutschland 89—has used history as a metaphor for contemporary politics.

For a season filled with espionage and hallucinations, stuffed animals and imminent computer technology, secret photographs and veiled assassination attempts, the lasting moment of “Deutschland 89” might just be someone reacting to something on TV.
After two full seasons (2015’s “Deutschland 83” and 2018’s “Deutschland 86”) tracking its individual players in a logistical and ideological struggle for the heart of Berlin, this latest opening episode tracks the events of early November 1989, culminating in the free movement of East German residents into West Germany and the dismantling of the wall dividing the two halves of the city.
Beginning “Deutschland 89” at this ending is an early signal that much like “Deutschland 86,” this is a season that won’t simply continue in the vein of its predecessors. Netflix’s Criminal is, depending on how you want to look at it, either one big, bold experiment or four smaller experiments. A police procedural where every episode takes place only inside an interview room and its immediate surroundings, it is Bottle Episode: The Series — only with an international component that makes the concept seem simultaneously bolder and a bit more formulaic.
The show is technically four shows, with some shared creative DNA, which will be listed separately in the Netflix interface: Criminal: United Kingdom, Criminal: France, Criminal: Germany, and Criminal: Spain.

Perhaps the smallest scale franchise in the business is the “I Love You” anthology of films. Each installment in what’s called the “Cities of Love” franchise looks at romantic stories centered in one town. Paris, je t’aime started it off, with New York, I Love You and Rio, I Love You coming next in line. Now, this week brings Berlin, I Love You to screens. Unfortunately, while the first two efforts had lots of charm and offered more good segments than bad, the inverse is true here. Too much of the story is easy to dismiss and forgettable. For the first time, you don’t ever get a sense of why this is a place to love, or why someone might fall in love there. This movie is, as mentioned above, the latest installment of the Cities of Love / “I Love You” anthology series. Obviously, it’s centered in Berlin,...

Netflix's first original German series, Dark, is returning for a second creepy season.
Dark Season 2 is coming to Netflix – and coming soon, no less!
The time-bending German mystery, which saw the streaming giant dip its toes into the water of original, non-English language live action projects, was a solid hit for the streaming giant, which premiered the inaugural season on December 1, 2017. Thus, Netflix’s green light for the second season of Dark arrived less than a fortnight after said premiere. (Check out our Dark Season 1 review!)
The creepy Kraut series, the creation of showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, proved to be a bellwether offering, with other non-English genre offerings having since manifested on the streaming platform.

Sylvester Groth shines in this East German movie about a luckless private in a Polish prison, thrown in with a group of defeated Nazi war criminals. For a country that usually paints the ideological divide in black and white red, Frank Beyer’s film of Hermann Kant’s semi-autobiographical story is surprisingly even-handed. An excellent addition to films from behind the old Iron Curtain.

We’ve seen so many tales told from the perspective of those caught up in the devastation of the Second World War, but rarely do we then catch up with them later on in life, when you would presume that their fight has now been fought. Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. centers on CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and Kgb agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer). Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

How did this sneak by? It's a combo escapist spy story, engrossing soap opera, and historically accurate Cold War flashback to the time of Duran Duran and Blondie, produced in Germany with a great cast of young and/or unfamiliar actors. Sure, the expected unlikelihoods are there, but so is an essential authenticity. Great fun! 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' box office: Bigger domestic flop than expected? Before I address the box office debacle of Warner Bros.' The Man from U.N.C.L.E., I'd like remark upon the fact that 2015 has been a notable year at the North American box office. That's when the dinosaurs of Jurassic World smashed Hulk and his fellow Halloween-costumed Marvel superheroes of Avengers: Age of Ultron. And smashed them good: $636.73 million vs. $457.52 million. (See also: 'Jurassic World' beating 'The Avengers' worldwide and domestically?) At least in part for sentimental (or just downright morbid) reasons – Paul Walker's death in a car accident in late 2013 – Furious 7 has become by far the highest-grossing The Fast and the Furious movie in the U.S. and Canada: $351.03 million. (Shades of Heath Ledger's unexpected death...

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' with Henry Cavill. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' box office: Hollywood's third domestic bomb in a row Right on the heels of Chris Columbus-Adam Sandler's Pixels and Josh Trank's Fantastic Four comes The Man from U.N.C.L.E., a big screen adaptation of the 1960s television series, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Man of Steel hero Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer. (See updated follow-up post: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie Box Office: Bigger Bomb Than Expected.”) Budgeted at a reported $88 million, to date Pixels has collected a mere $61.11 million in North America. Overseas things are a little better: an estimated $73.6 million as of Aug. 9, for a worldwide total of approx. $134.71 million. Sounds profitable? Well, not yet. First of all, let's not forget that distributor...

Warner Bros. Pictures released their new action movie, 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," into theaters today, August 14th, 2015, and all the top, major movie critics have turned in their reviews. It got a pretty mixed bag from them, garnering an overall 53 score out of a possible 100 across 34 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Alicia Vikander, Armie Hammer, Christian Berkel, Elizabeth Debicki, Henry Cavill, Hugh Grant, Jared Harris, Luca Calvani and Sylvester Groth. We've supplied blurbs from a few of the critics, below. Alonso Duralde from TheWrap, gave it a 78 grade, saying: "This new Man from U.N.C.L.E. would be an instant masterpiece if it were consistently as good as its best parts, but even as a hit-and-miss affair, it’s a bracing bit of late-summer fun for anyone who has given up the notion of a major studio offering anything truly revelatory until at least October.

Oh my, is it be “spy time” once more? Already? Wow, 2015 has been a big movie year for all those “cloak and dagger” undercover men (and women)! Early in the year, audiences were introduced to the “hush-hush” exploits of Kingsmen: The Secret Service, ripped fresh from a very adult graphic novel. As Summer began to heat up, funny lady Melissa McCarthy took satiric aim at the genre in Spy (aided by action vets Jason Statham and Jude Law). And just two weeks ago, film fans were gasping at the daredevil work of Tom Cruise, risking life and limb in his fifth go-round as Ethan Hunt, leader of the Imf in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (number one at the box office for the last couple weekends). And before the end of the year, the king of “gentlemen agents”, 007 Aka James Bond returns in his (official) twenty-fourth action extravaganza feature film Spectre.

Quietly, this year is turning into the year of the retro feeling spy movie. Yes, 2015 has had no shortage of the genre getting some really nice outings, even ones that are more modern than retro. Without even batting an eye I can rattle off titles this year like Kingsmen: The Secret Service, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and Spy, with the James Bond outing Spectre still to come. Also, of course, is one other thing. Yes, we have this weekend’s release of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. as well, the latest film from Guy Ritchie and apparently, like some of 2015’s other genre outings, one of the better spy movie outings of the last few years. The movie is an adaptation of the Sam Rolfe created television program, which also was a spy show, obviously. Here, it’s a 1960’s set spy thriller, centered around CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill...

Deutschland 83, Season 1, Episode 6, “Brandy Station”
Written by Ralph Martin and Anna Winger
Directed by Samira Radsi
Airs Wednesdays at 11pm (Et) on SundanceTV
After focusing almost entirely on Martin—and the enormously appealing Jonas Nay—in its earliest episodes, Deutschland 83 has slowly widened its frame to include a larger mix of characters. Last week’s “Cold Fire,” while still centering on Martin’s return back to the West, spent considerable time exploring the stories of Alexander, Annett, and even Ursula Edel. Now comes “Brandy Station,” which brings Alexander to the forefront and feels like the first true ensemble episode of the series.
But first there is Martin. Still recovering from his kidney surgery, he receives a visit from Annett, whom he now knows is pregnant with his child. Any hope viewers had of a heartfelt reunion between the two young lovers is quickly squelched. Martin wants to remain...

We take a look at the Wachowski's latest outing, the Netflix sci-fi drama Sense8. Spoilers lie ahead...
This is a spoiler-y review.
A collaboration between the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski sounded almost too good to be true, but Netflix delivered last Friday with the release of the entire first season of Sense8. If Daredevil gave genre fans an incentive to subscribe to Netflix, Sense8 gave them a reason to stick around.
The first season of Sense8 may not pack the same entertainment power as Daredevil, but Sense8’s long drawn – some might even say overdrawn – character-driven moments and slowly unfolding plot make the series almost as worthy of binge watching.
The premise of the series sounds like rehash of material that has already been seen countless times in genre fiction over the past three decades. Who has any interest left for yet another psychic powers story? Yet, from its first moment,...

It’s East Berlin, 1984—an entire nation under the Stasi’s watchful eye. Freedom is near impossible without risk of arrest or bullet courtesy of a botched escape west, the life of a sailor a young man’s one legitimate avenue out. With destination an afterthought, the open sea becomes every lucky appointee’s gateway to the world and a future. But like all oppressive regimes, false hope keeps the unhappy rabble in line. If workers strive to please, the promise of reward succeeds despite its empty, manipulative lie. Unable to risk defection via a one-way ticket to anywhere, the Germans only send those with family to leave behind as collateral. Those without must remain trapped in their cage on the docks, receiving instead ‘an opportunity’ to turn snitch and gain the responsibility and power necessary to transform into the very thing they hate.

By modern standards, Quentin Tarantino would be considered an auteur; a director whose films reflect that his personal creative vision. But what exactly is that vision, and how is it reflected in his work? One major observation that one can make about Tarantino’s films is that he often incorporates a number of references, many of which refer to cinema, specific films, or pop culture. His films are laced with this intertextuality were the relationship between texts (or films) is constantly being redefined. This method of pastiche is one way that he draws attention to the fact that his film is a constructed piece of fiction, or a “simulation.”
His rational behind this is heavily influenced by French theorist Jean Baudrillard’s notion of “hyperreality.” Hyperreality in this case refers to the inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from fantasy, as the two become blurred into one. Baudrillard argues that...

Along with playing the vengeful Sgt. Donny Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, Eli Roth spent a little time behind the camera filming the short Stolz der Nation or Nation's Pride. For the uninitiated, I'll try to explain without being spoileriffic. Basically, the screening of the film plays an important part in the latter half of the story. It's a piece of German war propaganda cooked up by Joseph Goebbels (Sylvester Groth), which stars Pvt. Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl) as himself -- a fighter who becomes a war hero after he basically sits in a high tower for a few days and picks off hundreds of enemy soldiers in Italy.
As the Blu-ray explains, Roth went out and shot a stunning number of shots in a very short period of time, and it all came together in this sniper-filled short. It's mostly a lot of black and white carnage...

The Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood. Some of the noms, or lack of, that make you go, hmmmm. The surprise, but crazy Best Supporting Actress nomination for Diane Kruger in Inglourious Basterds, no Up In The Air nom for Best Ensemble, even though it saw three acting nominations, and nothing for Julianne Moore of A Single Man or Alfred Molina of An Education.

The morning the Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for the 16th annual SAG awards. The actual ceremony will be held Saturday, January 23rd. There are a lot of gay-faves on the list of nominees.
For starters, Colin Firth picked up a nomination for A Single Man,and Sigourney Weaver is in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries thanks to Prayers for Bobby.
Freshmen series Glee and Modern Family are competing against each other for Beest TV Comedy Ensemble.
And surprisingly (at least for me) the cast of True Blood is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
You can check out the full list of nominess after the break!
