New Delhi, June 19 (Ians) Detecting Alzheimer’s may soon be as easy as spotting changes in cells of the retina of the eye, according to a breakthrough study led by international researchers including one of an Indian origin.
The study showed that physical changes in cells of the retina can occur at the same time as brain changes found in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers from Australia, Italy and the US investigated how two proteins — beta-amyloid and tau — known to build up in brains of Alzheimer’s patients, can also be found in cellular tissue of the eye, often long before symptoms are apparent.
The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Acta Neuropathol, could potentially contribute to the future development of an imaging technique with the potential to detect Alzheimer’s disease with a non-invasive eye test.

Well Go USA has re-released their official trailer for the US premiere of the Irish revenge thriller Bad Day for the Cut, which originally premiered years ago at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival playing in the Midnight section. A middle-aged Irish farmer, who still lives at home with his mother, sets off on a mission of revenge when his mother is murdered. The indie film stars Nigel O'Neill, Susan Lynch, Józef Pawłowski, Stella McCusker, and Stuart Graham. The AMC Networks family has renewed a pair of shows.
Acorn TV is bringing back Jane Seymour’s Harry Wild for a second season and AMC+’s short-form series Cooper’s Bar is also getting a sophomore run.
The Anglo-centric streamer said that Harry Wild delivered its most successful premiere week in its history when it launched in April. It will return in 2023 with another eight episodes.
Seymour stars as Harriet “Harry” Wild, a retiring university literature professor who is finding herself at one of life’s crossroads. In season one, jolted from a mugging, Harry reluctantly agrees to recover in the home of her son, Charlie, played by Kevin Ryan, a senior police detective. Charlie’s family does their best to tolerate Harry’s inscrutable ways, but Harry speaks her mind. A transfixing performance from Letitia Wright as a woman escaping violence and navigating a precarious safe haven anchors Aisha, Irish writer-director Frank Berry’s moving reflection on the plight of asylum seekers butting up against the cold indifference of bureaucracy. Matching Wright scene for scene is Josh O’Connor, again demonstrating that he’s among the best actors to emerge from Britain in the past decade, playing a diffident young man with his own troubled history who offers Aisha the balm of human connection. This tightly focused character study is a tiny film, with an emotional effect in inverse proportion to its size.
Berry (Michael Inside, I Used to Live Here) specializes in social-realist dramas that draw on his background in documentary and community filmmaking. Those roots are evident here in a film that grew out of his research into Ireland’s controversial Direct Provision system,...

Amazon is doubling down on The Wheel of Time.
The streamer has renewed the fantasy series for a second season ahead of the launch of the show. It comes as production has wrapped on season one in the Czech Republic.
It is the latest market in a long road for the adaptation of Robert Jordan’s books, which has been in development in one form or another for 20 years and that Amazon ordered to series in October 2018. Like many series, production of the drama was also hit by the pandemic.
The Wheel of Time, set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it, is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television and comes from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Chuck writer Rafe Judkins, who is showrunner and exec producer.

When the banshees of the past come calling in Jez Butterworth’s fearsome The Ferryman, you can bet their shrieking will be blood curdling. Directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall) and opening tonight on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, the Olivier-award-winning play is a stunner, stitching familiar elements of Irish pastoral drama, The Troubles history and Butterworth’s magical, myth-tapping touches into something as powerful as anything on today’s stage.
If nothing else – and, believe me, there is much, much else – The Ferryman cements the playwright’s status as an unrivaled ending-writer, as this tale of a sprawling Irish family reckoning with decades, even centuries, of violence and division spirals to a conclusion that recalls, in its own way, those earth-pounding, theater-shaking footsteps of unseen Giants that closed Butterworth’s transcendent Jerusalem in 2009.
Not that you’ll want to rush a moment of the three hours and 15 minutes...

"You're right to be scared." IFC Films has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Cured, from writer/director David Freyne. This is kind of a horror drama, more than straight horror, as it's set in a time "after" the zombie apocalypse hits and they've invented a cure. The plot involves a man who has been cured of the zombie disease be reintegrated back into the world, but those who are cured are shunned and mocked in society. He also still has all of his memories of when he did eat people, which causes a few other issues. Ellen Page stars with Sam Keeley, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Paula Malcomson, Stuart Graham, and Peter Campion . As cool as the concept for this is, the film is bad. I saw it at the Sitges Film Festival and did not like it at all, but that's just my own opinion.

“This is the third person I’ve buried this week.”
Violence begets violence. It’s a lesson we all (or most of us, at least) learn early on, and it’s a lesson firmly driven home by co-writer/director Chris Baugh in Bad Day for the Cut. His Irish gangster thriller pits an unassuming farmer against the ruthless members of a slick crime syndicate, and the results are both explosive and heartbreaking.
In Bad Day for the Cut, we meet Donal (Nigel O’Neill), a middle-aged man who lives at home with his mom, Florence (Stella McCusker), on their remote farm in the Irish countryside. He spends his free time fixing cars or drinking at the local pub, with nothing remotely out of the ordinary ever really happening in his quietly mundane existence. But one night, Donal discovers his mother brutally murdered in their home, and he sees a mysterious...

The murder of a grown man's mother turns a simple life into a blood-stained one in the new trailer for the revenge thriller Bad Day for the Cut, making its world premiere next week at the Sundance Film Festival.
Synopsis: "Donal is a farmer who still lives at home in a little Irish village with his mother Florence. He works the fields during the day and drinks in the local pub at night. He seems content with a simple, quiet life. The only sense we get of his wish for something more is an old campervan, which he has lovingly restored. When Florence is killed in an apparent home invasion Donal sets off for Belfast in the little red van, looking for revenge. What he finds is a world of violence and brutality that he can’t understand and a secret about his mother that will shake him to his core.

It’s been two years since audiences last saw Gillian Anderson as the driven and obsessive Stella Gibson, the detective superintendent who’s been after serial killer Paul Spector (played by Jamie Dornan) in BBC Two’s drama “The Fall.” A new teaser trailer for the third installment has just been released and shows Gibson being haunted by the murderer who was last shot at the end of Season 2.
“You’re under arrest, you’re going to prison,” we hear Anderson’s voice say as she’s seen swimming, recalling the words that she last spoke to Spector and what he told her.
“I live at a level of intensity unknown to you and others of your type,” we hear him say. “You will never know the almost God-like power that I feel when that last bit of breath leaves a body. That feeling of complete possession.”

Don't expect season two of BBC America's Thirteen TV show. At that time, creator Marnie Dickens told Radio Times that Thirteen was conceived as a mini-series which tells a complete story. So while Thirteen has not been cancelled in the traditional sense, it will not be renewed for a second season.

After she is captured by MI5 during an unsuccessful London bombing attempt, Clive Owen’s bullish agent ‘Mac’ convinces her to act as an informant rather than go to prison and face separation from her son. The danger to Collette gradually increases as her precarious position becomes ever more untenable and Mac grows more and more conflicted over his actions as the narrative progresses.

We are about to embark on what will hopefully be a rather fun summer of movies. With that in mind I focused the second installment of Streaming for Pleasure on some films you should see before this summer hits. Having a familiarity with an actor or director’s career can often shine some light on what their future projects may have in store. Also it can help garner more motivation to see a film you would have otherwise avoided. Curious what the Avengers might be like? What Tom Hardy has in store for the character of Bain? Well check out some of these films and they just might answer some of your questions.
