I never liked Tom Ripley but I keep meeting him.
I’ve “met” Ripley in five films, and he’s now the protagonist of a somber eight-part Netflix series. So filmmakers clearly find his character intriguing. Even though he has no character.
That, in itself, reminds me that Hollywood is suffering the same problem as Washington: an absence of vital young protagonists. Voters are confronted by an election that’s really a rerun, likely opened by a debate no one wants to witness.
In filmmaking, the worldwide success of Oppenheimer told us that a complex story becomes more interesting if it’s also about someone interesting. Yet movies with vibrant young protagonists seem to be losing their moment.
Dan Lin, the new chief of film at Netflix, confides a desire — since rebutted by Ted Sarandos on Thursday’s Q1 earnings call — to steer away from mindless mega-budget action films like...

Now it looks like we know who’ll be playing Ginger, as Deadline reports that child actress Matilda Firth has been added to the cast of Wolf Man.
Firth’s previous credits include Hullraisers, Christmas Carole, and Typist Artist Pirate King. Ginger was described as being “Female, 10 years old, white. Blake and Charlotte’s daughter. One of the most impressive parts of the April 13 episode of “Saturday Night Live” was Kenan Thompson’s ability not to break during the hilarious “Beavis and Butt-Head.” During the episode, a NewsNation anchor (Heidi Gardner) attempts to interview a professor (Thompson) about AI, but the conversation is interrupted when Thompson’s professor notices that two audience members, played by host Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day, look exactly like Beavis and Butt-Head.
While Gardner and Gosling couldn’t help but laugh through the duration of the sketch — which has been viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube in the five days since its air — Thompson somehow kept a straight face.
That was because he broke so hard during dress rehearsal, he tells Variety.
“It’s hit or miss. Sometimes I can hold it, sometimes I can’t. I got lucky on ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ that I cracked so hard at dress rehearsal,...

Ingrid Michaelson is used to people crying when they talk to her about The Notebook. Earlier this year, she tells me on Zoom, her piano in the background, she did an interview about her work on the Broadway musical adaptation of the beloved 2004 film, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. The journalist she was talking to had lost both of his parents, and Michaelson had lost her parents as well — her mother in 2014, and her father three years later. “We both were staring at each other for like 30 seconds...

T-minus two years for the release date of the upcoming Project Hail Mary. Amazon MGM Studios has finally set a date for the Ryan Gosling astronaut thriller. Deadline recently reported that the film, which is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is preparing for launch on March 20, 2026. There are currently no other big titles scheduled for that weekend. Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Andy Weir are all on board as producers of the film. Drew Goddard wrote the adapted screenplay based on the Andy Weir novel. Weir had also written the novel for The Martian, which served as source material for the Matt Damon film of the same name. Goddard is also set to executive produce with his Goddard Textiles partner Sarah Esberg, along with Ken Kao.
“The movie, filmed for Imax, is based on Weir’s (The Martian) novel and set in the near future.

When describing a big star’s new release, two clichés are frequently used: it is highly anticipated and long-awaited. Well, the 11th studio album by pop sensation Taylor Swift can’t exactly be called ‘long awaited’—just 18 months have passed since the release of her previous album, Midnights. The Grammy winner made her ‘highly anticipated’ 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, available on Friday, April 19, 2024.
The 16-track album is peaceful and enjoyable to listen to, but if you read the lyrics carefully—as most Swift fans do—you will discover a convoluted and disorganized stream of thought where Swift swings between waves of introspection, rage, longing, and grief.

Also, it is interesting to note that this latest album credits the two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone for her work on the song Florida!!!.

Crew crosses 80 crores in three weeks. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
After being in theatres for three weeks, Crew has hit the 80 crores mark. The film collected around 10 crores more in the week gone by and that too when there was mighty competition in the form of Eid releases Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan. Still, audiences continued to be interested in the all-women story, hence resulting in consistent footfalls.
The drop from the second week of 22.93 crores is also reasonable and rest assured, there would be much better stability this week. In fact it should only be in around 50% range because the shows have also been increased for the Ekta Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor production. Chances are good that the film will now make a dash towards 90 crores mark. It would have seemed difficult after the first week, which was good, had closed at 47.54 crores instead of scoring a half century there and then.

Over the past several days, a new viral story spread around social media when (thanks to a New York Post write-up), the juxtaposition of the terms “A.I.” and “girlfriend” became a chilling promise of things to come. That’s at least one way to interpret Late Checkout CEO Greg Isenberg’s prediction that the next growth industry for artificial intelligence is “dating.”
In a social media post on X, which is the platform formerly known as Twitter, Isenberg recounted how he met a 24-year-old “single guy” who told him he spends $10,000 a month on “AI girlfriends.” The anonymous man even described his A.I. “dating apps” as comfort at the end of the day.
“The market cap for Match Group is $9B,” Isenberg wrote. “Someone will build the AI-version of Match Group and make $1B+.” While Isenberg’s own personal feelings about that prospect remain ambiguous, the impact of...

“Killed them all, of course.”
Those five words were spoken by Robert Durst when the New York real estate heir, who was still mic’d, walked to the bathroom after completing his interviews for the HBO true-crime docuseries The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.
Durst had been suspected of killing his close friend Susan Berman, who was shot dead in December 2000 shortly after she told Durst that the Los Angeles police wanted to talk to her about Durst’s first wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst, who disappeared in 1982. He was acquitted for the 2001 murder of neighbor Morris Black, whom Durst admitted to dismembering, claiming he killed Black in self-defense.
Durst’s hot mic confession came in the jaw-dropping Jinx finale that aired March 15, 2015, and captured the nation.

Brian Cox Calls Joaquin Phoenix’s Performance In Napoleon “Truly Terrible”; Pokes Fun At His Name, “Wackeen… Wacky” (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Succession Star Brian Cox is not one to mince his words. The Veteran Actor, who has played timeless roles, has always made headlines because of his candor. He had feelings about Joaquin Phoenix‘s Napolean portrayal and is letting everyone know. Cox made some shocking revelations and said, “A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix.” Ouch, but if you think that is harsh, you will be surprised by his statements.
Brian played the role of Media Moghul Logan Roy, the patriarch who puts his kids through a game of hoops and leaps to take over the seat of the media conglomerate in the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series. The actor, the polar opposite of his character, has been known to stir feelings up because of his new statements at a London fest.

Heidi Gardner isn’t the only one laughing at the sight of Saturday Night Live’s Beavis and Butt-Head.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the sketch has racked up nearly 8.8 million views on YouTube. That number makes it one of only three clips this season to break eight million views on YouTube, sandwiched in between “Washington’s Dream” (8.3 million), and “I’m Just Pete” (13.2 million).
It’s a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that it’s only been four days since the clip was posted.
Starring Mikey Day and Ryan Gosling as two unsuspecting strangers who just happen to bear an uncanny resemblance to the ‘90s MTV cartoon duo, the sketch has grabbed a ton of attention online, in part because of the sheer number of performers who break during the sketch, including a rare break by Gardner.

Famously known for playing the Roy family patriarch in Succession, Brian Cox walked Vanity Fair through his trajectory of filmography and remarkable career, in 2022. Therein, the actor spoke fondly of his role as Agamemnon in Wolfgang Peterson’s 2004 historical epic Troy, alongside Brad Pitt’s Achilles.
Brian Cox in a still from Troy
Admitting that the role of Agamemnon was the only one that he has ever pursued in his career, Brian Cox mentioned how he lets his career fall into pieces, on its own. Meanwhile, speaking about the film and the stellar cast, Cox recalled Brad Pitt’s grandeur on set. According to Cox, watching Pitt’s performance made him believe that no other actor could ever beat his screen presence.

Eva Mendes praised Ryan Gosling’s Cuban accent in the “Can’t Tonight” Saturday Night Live sketch.
Gosling co-starred in the sketch with Marcello Hernández as two men trying to convince their friend, played by Kenan Thompson, to go out with them.
“Coño! My Cuban Papi made this Cuban Mami so happy with this!! Years of hanging out with my Dad paid off,” Mendes wrote on Instagram, sharing the sketch video.
Mendes, who is of Cuban descent and in a relationship with Gosling, acknowledged that Gosling picked up the accent by hanging out with her father.
Gosling and Hernández have heavy Cuban accents in the sketch, prompting the waitress (Sarah Sherman) to ask where the three guys were from.
Thompson’s character explains, “I’m Dominican, and he’s Cuban [Hernández], and he [Gosling] is from Tennessee, but ever since he married a Cuban woman, he is different.”

Eva Mendes is sharing her thoughts on one of partner Ryan Gosling‘s Saturday Night Live sketch.
Over the weekend, the 43-year-old Barbie actor hosted the NBC sketch show and in one skit, Ryan played a man from Tennessee who developed a Cuban accent after marrying a Cuban woman.
“A Cuban wife can change you,” Ryan says in the sketch, as he goes back and forth between stereotyped American and Cuban accents.

This past weekend, Ryan Gosling hosted a spectacular episode of "Saturday Night Live." There wasn't a single bad sketch among the bunch that debuted on the staple late-night comedy series, but there was one clear standout that had pretty much everyone involved breaking.
During a News Nation panel about artificial intelligence featuring Kenan Thompson as an expert on the subject being interviewed by Heidi Gardner, a distraction emerges in the audience in the form of two young men who happen to look uncannily like live-action versions of the animated characters Beavis and Butt-Head, from Mike Judge's comedy series of the same name. If you need a refresher or you missed the sketch over the weekend, take a look below:
Gosling appeared as Beavis, complete with an elongated, prosthetic nose and a big blonde pompadour haircut. After he's moved to avoid any more distraction, he's replaced with Mikey Day as Butt-Head,...

Heidi Gardner admits she left the Saturday Night Live stage in “a little bit in shock” after breaking character during the viral “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch.
During the sketch in Saturday’s episode hosted by Ryan Gosling, Gardner portrayed a NewsNation host who must confront two town-hall attendees distracting everyone because they look like Beavis (Gosling) and Butt-Head (Mikey Day). But when looking at Day’s Butt-Head, Gardner immediately broke into laughter, causing a collective laughter in the audience. Given it’s a rarity for Gardner to break, her reaction quickly circulated online with many joining her in the laughs.
When reflecting on the sketch to Vulture, the SNL star said that despite the rehearsals being fun, she never got “the sense that this would be a nuclear moment for me.” She explained that during rehearsals they were “still working out the particular blocking” of the sketch, including sorting out how and where to look,...

Saturday Night Live‘s Heidi Gardner said she tried mighty hard not to break character during last weekend’s now-viral Beavis and Butt-Head sketch, but seeing fellow cast member Mikey Day in full Butt-Head mode was just too much.
“They were in costume for the earlier rehearsals on Saturday with their wigs and outfits but not the prosthetics,” Gardner told Vulture about Day and Ryan Gosling, who played Beavis. “The dress rehearsal was when the prosthetics made their debut — the noses and the mouths. I didn’t know about Mikey’s exposed gums and teeth.
“When I looked and saw Mikey in the dress rehearsal, I lost it,” she continued. “I was shocked. I’m thinking about it right now and laughing. I recovered and tried to tell myself in between dress and the live show, ‘you can’t laugh like that again.’”

There was a lot of breaking character during the April 13 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” hosted by Ryan Gosling, but no one broke harder than Heidi Gardner during the now-infamous “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch. Gardner completely lost it midway through the sketch when she turned to see Day as Butt-Head sitting behind her. She broke character and couldn’t get herself composed for nearly a minute, leading to huge audience cheers and powering the sketch to 5.6 million views on YouTube and counting.

Last weekend’s break-filled Saturday Night Live didn’t, um, break any ratings records for the late-night sketch show, but it did build on last week’s ratings gains to deliver the show’s largest audience in months.
The sketch show hauled in an average of 4,704,000 total viewers and 983,000 P18-49 viewers on April 13, 2024, per live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen.
Out of the 17 SNL episodes that have aired this season to-date, the Gosling-fronted episode comes in at No. 3 overall in total viewers, and delivered the show’s largest linear audience since the Oct. 28, 2023 show hosted by Nate Bargatze.
This weekend’s Ryan Gosling-hosted episode gained +3% in total viewers from the previous edition of SNL (hosted on April 6 by Kristen Wiig), while its 983,000 P18-49 live-plus-same-day delivery was -10% from the Wiig episode.
