Move over, Ariel, Hollywood’s original mermaid movie, is back to make waves again! According to Deadline, Sarah Rothchild is writing the latest draft of Disney/Imagine/Free Association’s Splash remake. The project is reimagining Ron Howard’s 1984 comedy starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah as unlikely lovers from land and sea. To mix things up, Jillian Bell stars in the Splash remake in the role played by Hanks, while Channing Tatum stars in the role portrayed by Hannah. You head me. Tatum is strapping his floaties on to play a merman!
The original Spalsh starred Hanks, Hannah, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Dody Goodman, and Shecky Greene. The romantic comedy became a significant hit for Disney after swimming toward 70 million at the domestic box office. Splash was Howard’s first hit and helped put him on the map for decades. It’s a very happy birthday for TV legend Norman Lear, who gets to celebrate with a bonus present: The new take on Lear’s syndicated 1970s series “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” has landed in script development at TBS.
As reported in February, “Schitt’s Creek” star Emily Hampshire is developing a fresh version of “Mary Hartman,” along with Jacob Tierney (“Letterkenny”). After being shopped by Sony Pictures TV to buyers this spring, the project has landed at TBS. The news comes as Lear, who was born in 1922, celebrates his 99th birthday.
“The kick of kicks as I turn 99 today is learning that TBS is developing ‘Mhmh’ and will allow us to make a new version of it starring Emily Hampshire,” Lear said in a statement. “As someone who believes his 99 years on this planet is owed to the amount of laughter he enjoyed through the years, here’s to the next 99. Bless you all!

“Schitt’s Creek” star Emily Hampshire has signed on to star as the title character in a new, updated version of Norman Lear’s 1970s syndicated hit “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.”
Hampshire will also be an executive producer on the project, and co-write the script with Jacob Tierney (“Letterkenny”), who will serve as showrunner. Sony Pictures TV is planning to shop the show to buyers in the coming weeks.
It’s the latest series remake to come out of the Lear cannon, following the recent critically acclaimed reimagining of “One Day at a Time,” and an animated take on “Good Times” that is currently in the works. Lear and Brent Miller’s Act III Prods. is developing the new “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” with Sony, with Lear and Miller as executive producers alongside Hampshire and Tierney.
“Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” reunites Hampshire with Tierney, as Hampshire previously starred in Tierney’s film “The Trotsky.

Grease 2 gave me such writer's block in the Pfandom series because what to even focus on with such an event? I finally powered through but the focus naturally had to be on Lapfeiff's career. So, herewith a random collections of thoughts and observations from this viewing which I think was my 6th or 7th? The movie is terrible but I'm addicted to early Pfeiffer's lusty bravado in it, hence the multiple revisits.

When Jerry Herman was pegged by producer Gerard Oestreicher to write the score for a Broadway musical set in the fledgling State of Israel, he was a 28-year-old composerlyricist mostly known for writing clever lyrics and snazzy tunes for Greenwich Village topical reviews like Nightcap and Parade. But now, instead of writing for hip, downtown performers like Charles Nelson Reilly and Dody Goodman, he'd be penning a romantic score for opera stars Mimi Benzell and Robert Weede, with special comic relief material for Yiddish Theatre legend Molly Picon.

Earlier this month, when Vanilla Ice announced via Twitter that he was boldly defying instructions to evacuate his Florida home in the face of Hurricane Matthew, it not only inspired what had to be the greatest (and possibly also the most depressing) tweet ever made by the Florida Democratic Party, but it also made one hope that it might really be a sneaky promo for an upcoming Weather Channel series wherein the rapper and reality TV star goes head to head with natural disasters.

On Tuesday, People confirmed that Channing Tatum will star in a reboot of 1984's Splash as … the mermaid. Tatum, who'll star alongside Jillian Bell, will tackle the role he has been training his whole life to play. In the original, a young man (Tom Hanks) reunites with a mermaid (Daryl Hannah) who saved him from drowning as a child, but in the remake, the genders will be swapped. Hence, Tatum as merman. The original film, which was directed by Ron Howard, starred John Candy, Eugene Levy and Dody Goodman, and we hope the remake will have such charismatic players. (Can...

Mixon in new sitcom Mike and Molly. Photo courtesy CBS. Katy Mixon is the funniest part of the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly. Which, admittedly, isn’t the most ringing endorsement. It’s like saying, “Katy Mixon was the funniest part of the Razzie-winning Sandra Bullock comedy All About Steve,” or “Katy Mixon was the only thing that made Four Christmases remotely watchable.” All of those statements are entirely true, but it’s not the stuff of awards-season buzz. The only movie or TV project that Mixon hasn’t single-handedly saved from mediocrity was the first season of HBO’s Eastbound & Down, in which she played Kenny Power’s objet d’amour. While being noticeably funny in the presence of Danny McBride is no small feat, it’s not the thing most people seem to remember about her stint on the show. Even two years after the fact, comedy nerds are...

Mixing Comedy & Soap: A History of the Serialized Situation Comedy
By Doug Prinzivalli
As one of the producers of the hit web series Pretty - a parody hybrid of reality TV and soaps - I thought it would be a fun idea to take a brief look at the long history of the serialized situation comedy. The idea of mixing comedy with soap elements is not a new one - in fact it started over 60 years ago.
The First Hundred Years (CBS 1950-52) was a mildly humorous daily soap about newlyweds who are gifted with a bat-infested Victorian mansion. Sounds pretty wacky to me. After less than two years, it was replaced by something called The Guiding Light.
The Egg & I (CBS 1951-52) Based on a book by Betty MacDonald and the 1947 film (starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray) that followed, this show followed the misadventures of city folk...

Grease and Grease 2 star Dody Goodman has died at a New Jersey hospital after a lengthy battle with illness. She was 93.
The beloved funnywoman, who was also a regular on late-night hit The Tonight Show in America in the 1950s and 1960s, played Principal McGee's assistant Blanche in both Grease films.
Goodman was also a hit on Broadway, where she began her career after training as a dancer at the School of American Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
