Masters of the Universe was one of three big-budget 1987 movies that sunk Cannon Pictures (the other two were Over the Top and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace). It was supposed to be their version of Star Wars, boasting a significant budget (for Cannon) and high production values. It was based on the toys and cartoon series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe by Mattel, but the film had a very rocky road to the big screen. While it’s now considered a camp classic, thanks mainly to the involvement of Dolph Lundgren, at the time, many thought that his performance helped tank the movie. He almost ended up being dubbed in the final cut.
Indeed, in the documentary Toy Masters (excerpted by THR), Mattel executives found Lundgren’s accent unintelligible, and director Gary Goddard wanted him dubbed. “We actually did bring in a few actors to loop test,...

It looks like Amazon MGM Studios has He-Man’s power sword as the studio is in early talks to produce a live-action “Masters of the Universe” film, according to a insider with knowledge of the project.
Netflix put the property into turnaround after investing $30 million in its development. The project has been bouncing around Hollywood from Mattel and producer Todd Black for over 15 years, with Warner Bros. and Sony, as well as filmmakers like Jon M. Chu and McG temporarily involved.
This recent attempt was shelved due to concerns over the budget, which reportedly ran over $200 million and was shut down even after the filmmakers allegedly brought the costs below $180 million.
This latest version had Kyle Allen — still officially attached — starring as He-Man with Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”) set to direct.
Should Amazon move forward with the project, they will need to negotiate new agreements with the...

This latest version had Kyle Allen — still officially attached — starring as He-Man with Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”) set to direct.

Hollywood is always looking for the next big source of entertainment. Right now, it seems that video game adaptations are finally on the verge of legitimacy due to the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and HBO’s The Last of Us. Before that, it was superhero movies. And on and on it goes. However, the industry’s endless search for intellectual property (IP) has for decades led to false starts and brief flirtations with the world of toys and board games. When looking across the chronology of those attempts, a few key flaws stand out as to why the concept has still yet to catch on quite as strongly as comic books or video games.
Adaptations of products are notoriously difficult to get right, because they are not necessarily attached to a narrative that people know. The basic premise of a toy’s brand might be established, but...

We have movies for most of the Marvel Comics characters, don't we? Oh ... wait, no. No, it appears that we don't. There is one major character missing from the MCU, and she's pretty fabulous. People have been fan-casting this role for years, and if a movie about them ever happened, it could be really visually interesting. This is especially true if a certain director helmed a film about her.
In a recent interview with director Cameron Crowe, Rolling Stone proposed something that would be right up his alley in terms of his body of work, and now that it's been talked about, it is absolutely something that has to happen.
As you know, Crowe is the director of "Almost Famous," which is about the music industry. Is it becoming clearer? Do you have a guess? She's sparkly...

Stuerman met Singer in 2009 in New York City when he was 18 years old, and entered into a sexual relationship with him shortly after; Singer was 43. Their time together ended after Stuerman was fired as Singer’s assistant in June 2013 on the film “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which opened the following year. Oprah Winfrey knows that she’s courting controversy with her new special “After Neverland,” an interview with two men who have accused Michael Jackson of sexually abusing them when they were young boys.
“I’m gonna get it,” the talk show host predicted during a taping of the broadcast on Wednesday at the New York Times Center. But, Winfrey argued, the issue of sexual abuse is too important to remain silent no matter how much her program angers the “gloved one’s” fans.
“This movie transcends Michael Jackson,” she told an audience of more than 100 abuse survivors. “It allows us to see societal corruption.”
“Beware of people who just want to be around your children,” Winfrey added at another point during the hour-and-a-half long taping.
The program will air on March 4 after the second and final episode of the upcoming HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland,” a four-hour investigation into the claims of Jackson accusers,...

Broadway producer Gary Goddard is facing accusations from seven more accusers from a Santa Barbara theater group that he sexually molested or attempted to molest them as children. Accounts in the Los Angeles Times story range from straying hands on thighs or fondling during a Disneyland ride to sexual abuse during overnight stays. Jessica Chastain isn’t mincing words when it comes to sexual harassment in Hollywood — especially regarding X-Men director Bryan Singer.
Following reports of alleged decades of sexual harassment by Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Brett Ratner, Chastain tweeted out an article highlighting similar accusations lodged against Singer, writing “Let us not forget.”
“I do not feel beholden to anything,” Chastain told The Daily Beast of any potential blowback from the tweet. “I’m going to speak my mind about any injustice that I see. I’m not afraid of anything in terms of that. And I think the greatest myth...

If you've never seen the documentary Toy Masters it's a film definitely worth checking out. The doc focuses on the classic He-Man franchise and the story of behind the toy line, cartoon series, and movie.
Regardless of how bad the 1987 live-action movie was, I still love it, and I have very fond memories of watching it over and over again while eating Kentucky Fried Chicken. I was recently reminded of this Toy Masters doc when I saw an article pop up on THR, that focused on Dolph Lundgren and how he only had three chances to nail the dialogue or his voice would be dubbed. I included the segment from the doc below that focuses on the movie and it feature members of the crew talking about the crazy film production! It's a fascinating story!
Apparently, everyone was worried about Lundgren's voice because it was so hard to understand him.

Director and documentarian Mark Hartley scores both a film history and comedy success with this ‘wild, untold’ account of the 1980s film studio that was both revered and despised by everyone who had contact with it. The ‘cast list’ of interviewees is encyclopedic, everybody has a strong opinion, and some of them don’t need four-letter words to describe their experience!

Captain Power And The Soldiers Of Tomorrow, a sci-fi television series that ran for 22 episodes in the late 80s, was ahead of its time during its original seven month stint. With its futuristic Terminator-esque setting, comic book-ish mythos, and its use of groundbreaking special effects technology, it's the kind of thing would have definitely caught people's attention had it arrived a few years later. The property may now get a chance to capture the imagination of a new generation of fans thanks to a planned reboot.
Oh, 1980s...

Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future is one of those properties from the 1980s that I had a blast with. It was a cool sci-fi TV series that you could interact with the tie-in action figure toy line. It was actually on a list I put together of 1980s toys that you might not remember. The original series took place in the year 2147 and was set in the aftermath of the Metal Wars, which was an World War that involved an epic battle between humans and machines.
The original co-creator of the series, Gary Goddard, is rebooting the franchise in a new series called Phoenix Rising. and thanks to Deadline, we have information on the story and a teaser trailer for you to watch:

The 1980s sci-fi TV series "Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future" is set to be rebooted under the new moniker "Phoenix Rising".
The original series was a twenty-two episode space drama set on Earth in the year 2147 and the aftermath of a global confrontation between humans and machines. The show was one of the first series to incorporate CG characters with live-action performers.
The new take begins fifteen years after humanity lost a devastating war against an A.I. called Overmind. Jonathan Power, the son of the man who caused that war, learns the truth about his father and discovers a new type of battle armor that will enable a team of soldiers and civilians to fight the Bionic armies of the New Order.
The original's co-creator Gary Goddard is one of those behind the reboot which is in active development at Goddard Film Group and Planet X Productions.

Netflix released the whole second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Friday, and I'm going to offer some overall thoughts on the season, followed by specific takes on each episode, coming up just as soon as I ask whether Cate Blanchett is really a great actress, or just tall... Netflix made the first six episodes available to critics, and while I enjoyed most of those early installments, the back half of the season was by far the stronger part, and the phase of things where the shift from making episodes for NBC to making them for Netflix was much more apparent. Season 1 also turned more serialized towards the end, with the trial of the Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, and it had its emotional moments as Kimmy faced down her captor. But the later episodes of season 2 felt darker and more complicated in their attempt to address Kimmy's emotional damage.

The second season of Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt arrives on Friday. Here’s what made the first run such unmissable good value…
“We need Kimmy. Stat.”
That was the verdict when a bunch of us emerged battle-worn from a screening of the emotionally draining Room, the Fritzl-inspired story of a woman kidnapped as a teenager and held captive for many years.
Room is a powerful and distressing film. Thanks to actors Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, perhaps even more so than the novel from which it was adapted. It’s a film that leaves you feeling as if you’ve been staring too directly at a bright light. When you blink, the anguish remains imprinted in negative inside your head.
To shake the lingering wretchedness, we needed a Newtonian solution. A reaction opposite and equal to the poignant pain of Room. And in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,...

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the Ellie Kemper-starring sitcom by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock returns for season two on Friday the 15th of April.

It's hugely funny, brilliantly cast and stands up to repeat viewings. Repeated repeat viewings.

12. "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" Apocalyptic Premise:Well, depends on who you believe. According to the Reverend Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm), the reason that he trapped Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) and three other women in a bunker for years was because he wanted to protect them from the vengeful Gosh raining destruction down upon the sinful outside world. (Why invite no other men? He didn't want the bunker to be "a sausage fest," natch.) The Reverend Wayne was lying, of course, but his followers believed him for years — to varying degrees, at least. So, How Brutal Is It? When Kimmy sees the outside world for the very first time in 15 years, she's clearly elated. But over the course of Season 1, it's clear that even if the Reverend Wayne's prophecy was a lie, the experience had a profound impact on her. Thanks to some pretty intense Ptsd, Kimmy's sunny outlook on life is met with daily challenges,...

The He-Man and The Masters of the Universe movie from 1987 with Dolph Lundgren is always worth another look.
Masters of the Universe, the 1987 movie starring Dolph Lundgren that transferred what was at the time one of the most successful toy lines of all time to the big screen, wasn’t as well received as anybody hoped. The modestly budgeted He-Man movie underperformed at the box office, and response was so lukewarm that it’s credited as one of the factors that toppled the Masters of the Universe toyline from absolute mastery of the boy's action figure market to mere afterthought in the space of a year.

On August 7, 1987, "Masters of the Universe" stank up movie theaters across the country and killed any hopes of kicking off a live-action franchise for He-Man and his merry band of heroes (the property is currently in the process of being rebooted with the help of "Thor" screenwriter Christopher Yost). As I wrote earlier this week, "MotU" actually wasn't all bad, with standouts like Frank Langella's Skeletor and Bill Conti's excellent score keeping the film just this side of unwatchable. Glory be! A happy byproduct of my online research arose in the form of a YouTube recommendation for a video entitled "The Making of Masters of the Universe the Motion Picture," which is not, as it turns out, an extra ripped from the film's DVD release but rather a segment from a 2012 documentary entitled "Toy Masters," which boasts the following synopsis on IMDb: "Filmmakers Roger Lay, Jr. and Corey Landis...

Of the action-oriented Saturday morning cartoon series aimed at young boys in the 1980s, I always gravitated towards "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," which followed the homoerotic exploits of the blonde-tressed hero who fought to keep Castle Grayskull from the evil clutches of Skeletor. I loved the colors and the spectacle of it. I loved the fantastical setting of Eternia. And as a burgeoning gay man in particular, I loved that it integrated strong female heroes like Teela and the Sorceress into the action (the franchise would later be expanded to include She-Ra, He-Man's equally badass twin sister). In the summer of 1987, the series (itself based on a toy line) was adapted into a live-action film entitled "Masters of the Universe," which was...not a success. Originally ballyhooed as the "Star Wars" of the '80s, the Gary Goddard-directed film was ripped to shreds by critics...
