- Co-wrote the Grammy-winning song "Killing Me Softly With His Song" with Charles Fox which spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, sung by Roberta Flack.
- Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984.
- Wrote English lyrics to the Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes Brazilian song "Garota de Ipanema" that became best known as "The Girl From Ipanema", one of the most recorded songs of all time in popular music.

- Started his music career working for music publishers David Blum and Edwin H. Morris.

- Co-wrote with Charles Fox Jim Croce's " I Got A Name" which was released the day after the singer's death in a plane crash 30th September 1973.
- Worked in composer Morris "Moose" Charles on the Broadway musicals Whoop-Up in 1958 and The Conquering Hero in 1961.
