Libby Geist, a veteran ESPN executive who has been with the sports-media giant since 2008, will leave the company early next year, the latest in a series of prominent content executives to announce their departure from the Disney-owned outlet.
Geist is ESPN’s vice president and executive producer of ESPN Films and original content. She oversees most aspects of projects produced by ESPN Films, as well as original series and studio shows for ESPN Plus, the company’s growing streaming-video service. She also supervises ESPN stand-outs like the long-form news series “30 for 30,” and the ESPN Plus original “Detail with Kobe Bryant.”
Her exit, previously reported by Sports Business Journal, follows a series of structural changes at ESPN that will see its content chief, Connor Schell, leave to take up independent production duties; layoffs of 300 staffers; the departure of digital content chief Ryan Spoon; and a new executive arrangement that...

Willie Geist, one of TV’s early-morning regulars, knew he was in for a dangerously late night.
Though he rises at 4 a.m. on most days, the NBC News and MSNBC anchor has served as master of ceremonies for the annual National Board of Review awards for the past few years. And so there he was, hunkered backstage at New York’s glitzy Cipriani 42nd Street on Jan. 8, socializing with dozens of A-listers who strolled in to hand out trophies. There was Richard Gere one moment, Sophia Bush another, and then Trevor Noah. All the while, Geist knew the event was going to keep him out well past the 9 p.m. curfew he regularly sets for himself. He wouldn’t get the six hours of sleep he requires to manage his daily a.m. duties as co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“Typically insane” is how Geist, 43, describes his schedule...

The Young and the Restless tallied 23 nominations as honors were announced this morning for the 40th annual Daytime Emmy Awards. Restless’ impressive take helped CBS lead all networks with 50 overall nominations. PBS and ABC followed, with 44 and 38 nods, respectively.
General Hospital, which earned 19 nominations, joined Restless in the race for Outstanding Drama Series, and Sesame Street received 17 nods, including three for Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo who faces allegations of sexual misconduct.
Good Morning America and Today will bring their ratings rivalry to the Emmys, where they’ll be joined by CBS Sunday Morning in the Outstanding Morning Program category.

News about the move comes from anonymous sources who spoke to The New York Times‘ Brian Stelter, who’s writing a book about the morning newscasts. He says Willie Geist will serve as a backup to Matt Lauer on Today. But he’ll primarily be there to join Natalie Morales, Al Roker and Savannah Guthrie for the third hour of the broadcast. As a result, Geist will give up his 5:30 Am Et MSNBC show Way Too Early With Willie Geist. And he’ll also have less time for Morning Joe, where the Nyt says Geist has served as the show’s “straight man.” Geist’s contract was due to expire at the end of September. He’s the son of CBS News correspondent Bill Geist.
