Netflix has decided not to renew Latina-led teen dramedy Freeridge, a spinoff to On My Block, for a second season, Rolling Stone has learned. The news arrives just two months after the show first premiered on the streaming service in early February, according to a source.

The cast of the "On My Block" spinoff, "Freeridge," promised the new show would bring all the high jinks, mystery, romance, and life lessons that fans of the original loved, and the series - which hit Netflix on Feb. 2 - certainly delivers.
"Freeridge" season one follows a new core four of high-school friends - Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cameron), Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi), and Bryana Salaz (Inez) - as they navigate friendship, love, class conflict, grief, and - believe it or not - a curse wreaking havoc on their lives.
With appearances from familiar "On My Block" characters sprinkled throughout the fast-paced season - like Ruby's parents, Geny (Paula Garces) and Ruben (Eric Neil Gutierrez), as Gina and Inez's neighbors; Jamal (Brett Gray) calling in with some Roller World intel; and an Abuelita look-alike - "Freeridge" packs a punch for old and new fans alike.

‘On My Block’ Spinoff ‘Freeridge’ at Netflix Casts Tenzing Norgay Trainor and Peggy Blow (Exclusive)

It took an extra year (thanks to the pandemic), but the inaugural cohort from the Netflix Series Director Development Program is finally celebrating its completion.
Nine directors hoping to expand their opportunities in episodic work — nominated by a creative executive at the streamer and ultimately selected by Netflix exec producers — have spent the past two years participating in a part-time program that involved weekly classes and a dozen training sessions as well as hands-on experience and directing assignments on a Netflix show. (Aotn)- You may be very familiar with Paula Garces’ roles in such properties as “Law and Order: Svu,” “Devious Maids” and the “Harold and Kumar” series of films. But, you’ve likely not heard about her passion for comics and gaming, or of her heroic property that’s taking NY Comic Con by storm this weekend, “The World of Aluna.”
Now, that’s a shame, because “The World of Aluna” is a fresh take on the Super Heroine. One that spins the “touched-by-gods” trope and places it squarely in the Pre-Columbian New World. A butt-kicking, super powered, bridge between two worlds who was just in time in the 1500s.
Garces’ co-creation is also a timely figure for the 21st Century as well, a role model not limited by history. No, Aluna is also a genre bending, cross cultural superwoman, poised to make some noise with the big comic book boys and girls.

Arrested Development: Katz’s Debut an Affectionate Familial Dramedy
A familiar yet generally charming vehicle that impressively utilizes a pair of actors known mostly from a mainstream comedic realm, Adult Beginners is a low-key dramedy assembled from unpredictable voices. Premiering at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival before making its Us bow at SXSW earlier in 2015, it serves as producer Ross Katz’s feature debut (previously he directed the 2009 television drama Taking Chance, starring Kevin Bacon), with Nick Kroll credited with the story, and a screenplay penned by Liz Flahive (“Nurse Jackie”) and Jeff Cox (Blades of Glory, 2007). Neither as broadly comedic or serious minded as the credits would seem to indicate, the title serves as an estranged sibling reunion film that plays like the lighter, rosy faced cousin of last year’s The Skeleton Twins. Produced by the increasingly philanthropic Duplass Bros., the film displays the sort of vibrant charm...

A young, hipster entrepreneur (Nick Kroll) crashes and burns on the eve of his company’s big launch. With his entire life in disarray, he leaves Manhattan to move in with his estranged pregnant sister (Rose Byrne), brother-in-law (Bobby Cannavale) and three year-old nephew in the suburbs — only to become their manny. Faced with real responsibility, he may finally have to grow up — but not without some bad behavior first.
From director Ross Katz, here’s the new trailer for Adult Beginners.
Katz made his directorial debut with the HBO film “Taking Chance.” Beginning as a film producer, the Adult Beginners director said, “My dream came true when a script called “Brother’s Keeper” (now titled “Adult Beginners”) landed on my desk. Written by the brilliant Liz Flahive and Jeff Cox, with a story originated by comedian and actor Nick Kroll, I was absolutely blown away as I tore through the script.

Maid of Honor: Walker’s Thriller Uneasily Navigates Issues of Class

There must be a compelling thriller to be made about immigration and domestic servitude, but The Maid's Room isn't it.
Writer-director Michael Walker's dreary film begins with the doe-eyed Drina (Paula Garcés), a recent Colombian immigrant, being driven by her boyfriend to a wealthy family's isolated summer home. She gets a brief, patronizing tour from Mrs. Crawford (Annabella Sciorra), accepts a live-in position, and that's about the last coherent thing that happens.
When Drina hears the couple's son Brandon (Philip Ettinger) arrive home drunk one night, the front of his banged-up car having been conspicuously cleaned, she begins to suspect a hit-and-run. It's a thin setup for suspense, so Walker shifts the film's tone to that of a cheap morality play, w...

Some of the best psychological thrillers of modern times have come from obscure directors working with unknown casts on tiny budgets. Take Nacho Vigalondo’s Timecrimes, Ben Wheatley’s Kill List and Alex R. Johnson’s Two Step as some recent examples. Next month will see the release of The Maid’s Room, from Price Check director Michael Walker. Whether it will be added to that list of unexpected gems remains to be seen, but the tense clip that We Got This Covered is exclusively debuting for you today is a very promising indicator.
In the clip, live-in maid Drina (Paula Garcés) discovers a newspaper clipping related to a recent hit-and-run, then overhears a conversation between her affluent employer Mr. Crawford (Bill Camp) and his teenage son Brandon (Philip Ettinger). The bits and pieces of what she hears sparks her realization that Brandon is responsible for the accident. It’s a brief,...

Paladin will release the Hitchcockian thriller "The Maid's Room" in theaters and on digital platforms in the spring, company president Mark Urman announced today. The film, which was written and directed by Michael Walker ("Chasing Sleep," "Price Check"), had its world premiere last fall at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Set and filmed on Long Island, "The Maid's Room" follows Drina (Paula Garces), an immigrant who takes a job for the season as live-in maid to the Crawfords, a privileged New York family who maintain a splendid home in the Hamptons. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford spend most of their time in the city, but their teenage son, Brandon, spends the summer on the beach, and Drina must look after him and his spoiled friends. The maid’s room is next to the garage, and Drina overhears Brandon when he returns late one night, noisily and obviously drunk. The next day,...

Lifetime's "Devious Maids" has been building to a major reveal in its season finale, and to understand who killed Flora and why, Lifetime is re-airing the entire season Sunday (Sept. 22) in advance of the finale. The marathon starts at 10 a.m. Et.
The show will end as it began -- at a black-tie pool party at the Powells.
In the pilot, a maid, Flora (Paula Garces), was fatally stabbed. She staggered out to the party, and collapsed into the pool, her blood billowing about her.
A young cater waiter was immediately arrested, which made sense considering all the evidence pointed to him knifing her. But his mother, Marisol (Ana Ortiz), was so certain of her son's innocence that she gave up her job as a college professor and went undercover as a maid.
Marisol was relentless in her pursuit of the truth to free her son. She never really did...

It won't air for weeks, but for the "Project Runway" Season 12 finalists, it's all over except for the waiting.
The last eight designers in the reality show competition all presented their collections Friday (Sept. 6) at New York's Mercedz-Benz Fashion Week held in the middle of Lincoln Center.
Judge/host Heidi Klum introduced fellow judges Zac Posen and Nina Garcia, who were joined by "Scandal" star Kerry Washington. Alyssa Milano -- who will host Season 3 of "Project Runway All Stars" -- actress Paula Garces, rapper Bow Wow and 2012's Miss USA Nana Meriwether were also in attendance.
Wearing a bronze, one-shouldered gown, Klum, knowing that the fashion week theaters run on an extremely tight schedule, asked to "get the party started," but not before dragging mentor and host Tim Gunn onto the catwalk for a declaration of love.
"I'm rolling bandages in the back," Gunn said. "Just metaphorically."

In the first episode since the Lifetime telenovela was renewed, "Devious Maids" creator Marc Cherry reveals more secrets about the murdered maid who launched the story.
It isn't yet obvious who killed Flora (Paula Garces), though a few minutes with her and one understands why she evokes homicidal thoughts. A flashback shows Michael (Brett Cullen) offering her hush money for sex she had with his client. Flora sneers at the amount.
She demands more, telling Michael that she was raped. Michael's initially incredulous because she had been a prostitute.
Flora explains that of course prostitutes can be raped, and adds that she is pregnant. She doesn't name the rapist or the father, but they were different men.
This episode is all about getting priorities straight, as these four plot points prove.
1) The always-dependable Judy Reyes as Zoila, maid and consigliere to Susan Lucci's Genevieve, remains the voice of reason.

With growing ratings, Lifetime’s Devious Maids has received a pickup for a 13-episode second season. It's not that the maids on "Devious Maids" are flawless, but most of the people around them, with one exception, are so much worse.
Genevieve (Susan Lucci, who gets a little more luminous each episode) is the lone exception. Sure, she's vain, ditzy, helpless and shallow, but she's incredibly sweet and all she wants is for everyone to be in love.
Her long-lost brother, Henri, (Richard Burgi) returns home after a long absence -- three husbands ago for Genevieve -- and tells her, lovingly, that she looks emaciated.
"You always say the sweetest things," she coos.
Henri is the rich man who broke Zoila's (Judy Reyes) heart. If Valentina (Edy Ganem) is their child, it wasn't confirmed. Some of this episode's best scenes show the dynamic between Genevieve and Valentina and how they have been part of each other's lives for decades.

Paula Garcés may be a “Devious Maid” in Marc Cherry’s controversial new series, but beneath her character Flora’s bloody apron lies the heart of a heroine.
As the voice and brains behind Aluna, a Latina superhero quickly making a name for herself in the gaming world, the 39-year-old actress is hoping to represent Latinos and women in pop culture. The Huffington Post caught up with the Colombian-American star to talk about Aluna and her latest partnership with Sekretagent Productions (“Assassin’s Creed,” “Arkham Origins”) to revamp her heroine with a new look and graphic novel trilogy set to be released this fall.
HuffPo: So this all started about three years ago when you first went to Comic Con to promote Harold & Kumar and other projects, what was your first impression of the event?
Paula: It was a big year for me at Comic Con and I had no idea what Comic Con was.

Devious Maids — the latest from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry and based on a Mexican soap opera, Ellas son la Alegría del Hogar – follows the lives of four Latina maids working amongst the rich and crazy in southern California. With Eva Longoria as one of the executive producers and starring Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz, Entourage’s Dania Ramírez, Scrubs’ Judy Reyes, and Without A Trace’s Roselyn Sánchez, there’s some serious Latina power coming from this show. Nonetheless, for a show with this type of premise, there was always going to be some evidence of stereotypes.

"Devious Maids" has had so much buzz surrounding it for so long that the Lifetime show, which premiered Sunday (June 23), had to be terrific.
Granted, there will be critics. But those who loved "Desperate Housewives" will recognize the sensibility of its creator, Marc Cherry, and one of its stars, Eva Longoria (who's an exec producer). Plus there's a whole lot of over-the-top telenovela drama.
Set in the rarefied world of Beverly Hills, the show opens at a party in a mansion.
"I think what you people do is heroic," the imperious Evelyn Powell (Rebecca Wisocky, "True Blood") says in the series' opening line. The stately redhead in a satin seafoam gown gives momentary kudos to the great work maids do, then her voice turns steely and she says to Flora (Paula Garces): "I am in awe of your determination to succeed in this great country of ours. Every great drama needs an ice queen and in the new Lifetime drama series Devious Maids, Rebecca Wisocky has the pleasure of portraying Evelyn Powell, an ultra-rich dilettante with a keen sense of importance and self-preservation. When Evelyn’s maid ends up murdered in her house, her first concern is to the disruption of her elegant dinner party and how inconvenient sudden death can be, not to mention how messy. In an exclusive interview, Rebecca shared how deliciously fun it is to portray someone as egocentric as Evelyn and what kinds of mischief arises from the unexpected murder amongst the Powell’s lavish mansion.
What drew you to Devious Maids and the role of Evelyn Powell?
Rebecca: First of all, the chance to work with Marc Cherry, and second, it’s a large ensemble cast just jam-packed with amazing talented, fun, kind people. We really had a wonderful time making the show.

The Syfy series Warehouse 13 likes to play with death, so much so that cheating death has become a central theme of the show. But in a surprise twist before the long hiatus, Warehouse 13 changed the rules and finally delivered a death that was not reversible. Killing off fan-favorite Leena (Genelle Williams), fans were as devastated as the characters left standing on the show. In addition, discovering that Artie was responsible for her was even more shocking. Artie was the one man who we could never conceive of doing such a thing and the result was haunting. In a recent press conference call, executive producer Jack Kenny and stars Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly talked about the ripple-effects of Leena’s death, how she came to draw the short-stick, as well as previewing all the fun guest-stars upcoming over the next 10 episodes of Season 4.5.

A year after Lifetime picked up "Devious Maids" from ABC, it's finally going to make it to air.
The series from "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry will premiere June 23, Lifetime says. It follows five housekeepers working for Beverly Hills and the relationships they have with each other and the families who employ them.
The series kicks off with the murder of a maid (Paula Garces) at the home of her employers. Her friends -- series stars Judy Reyes, Roselyn Sanchez, Dania Ramirez and Edy Ganem -- turn to one another for support. A new housekeeper (Ana Ortiz) also enters the picture and may have a connection to Flora's death.
The series also stars Susan Lucci, Drew Van Acker ("Pretty Little Liars"), Grant Show, Mariana Kleveno, Brett Cullen, Brianna Brown, Matt Cedeno, Melinda Paige Hamilton, Rebecca Wisocky and Tom Irwin.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas
Stars: John Cho, Kal Penn, Neil Patrick Harris, Paula Garcés, Danny Trejo | Written by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg | Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson
Harold and Kumar, the twenty-first century’s answer to Cheech and Chong return with their third film, a festive extravaganza featuring hi-jinks (or, if you will, ‘high-jinks’), Father Christmas and, of course, Neil Patrick Harris. Or if we’re being humbugs, child abuse, grievous bodily harm and attempted rape.
It’s fairly amusing to note that Kal Penn (Kumar) abruptly left his regular gig on House (the character was hastily killed off off-screen) to take a job with the Obama administration, a post he left with similar swiftness to film a new Harold & Kumar movie. Here is man with his priorities in order (Penn retook his post before leaving again to star in the Nph-starring How I Met your Mother). Bleary-eyed H...
