10. Not Another Teen Movie (2001)
Tired of the repetitive teen rom-coms of the 1990s, director Joel Gallen decided to make his own — and arguably, one of the best by far. In perhaps the most classic teen movie tale, a popular high-school jock gets challenged by his friends to turn a shy and bullied girl into a prom queen… And hopelessly falls in love with her.
You can watch Not Another Teen Movie on Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video.
9. Scary Movie (2000)
A very similar thought occurred to Keenen Ivory Wayans, the director of Scary Movie who pumped his flick full with the most popular horror cliches of the 1990s — and still produced a greatly entertaining film. A group of teenagers who accidentally killed a man is haunted by a mysterious mumbling killer who picks them off one by one.
You can watch Scary Movie on Max, Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video.

The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).

Five years after scoring back-to-back Emmy wins for helming the 89th and 90th Oscars, Glenn Weiss could clinch his fifth Best Variety Special Directing trophy for his work on the latest Academy Awards ceremony. Given the knowledge that Jimmy Kimmel hosted said two 2010s Oscars events as well as the one Weiss is currently nominated for, a majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy predictors expect history to simply repeat itself, and they are wise to think so.
Weiss’s most formidable challengers in this contest are producing Emmy winner Jay-Z and seven-time directing nominee Hamish Hamilton, who are recognized for conducting Rihanna’s halftime performance at the most recent Super Bowl. Also in the mix are the directors of the stand-up specials “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.”

Jay-Z was nominated for another Emmy for directing Rihanna’s halftime show during the 2023 Super Bowl.
Wednesday’s nomination brings the rapper, née Shawn Carter, up to three total primetime Emmy nominations, including a win for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show, which featured performances from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, and a nomination for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for the 2021 Super Bowl Halftime Show, which featured a performance by The Weeknd.
While Jay-Z is credited as an executive producer for the 2021 and 2022 Halftime Shows through his entertainment agency Roc Nation, which produced all three shows alongside Jesse Collins Entertainment and Dps, the rapper upped the game to directing for Rihanna’s mashup performance. Before he was Captain America, Chris Evans was just a guy spoofing fellow heartthrobs Freddie Prinze Jr. and James Van Der Beek. Evans' 2001 comedy Not Another Teen Movie, a riff on hit films like She's All That, Can't Hardly Wait and Cruel Intentions, just hit Netflix, reminding us that Steve Rogers has always been pretty damn funny, no matter what Tony Stark might think. And the future Marvel star wasn't the only young actor taking on his first major film role in the Joel Gallen-directed movie, with Grey's Anatomy and Supergirl fan-fan-favorite Chyler Leigh starring opposite Evans in the flick that became a surprise hit with a $66 million box office gross. The 36th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards are set for Thursday live at 10 p.m. Et/Pt exclusively on IFC and AMC+, with Saturday Night Live‘s Melissa Villaseñor as host of the two-hour ceremony, which will be virtual this year because of the pandemic.
In another twist from the norm, the Spirits this year moved off its traditional Saturday-before-the-Oscars date, a longtime staple. The event is traditionally held on the beach at Barker Hanger in Santa Monica.
Still, organizers are pulling out some virtual tricks in an effort to get close to what is always a laid-back, fun affair at the beach celebrating the best in indie film. Film Independent has teamed with virtual venue Looped to create and produce an interactive online equivalent of the Spirit Awards’ beach tent for “attendees,” who can venture to a curated cocktail hour (beginning at 9 p.m. Et/6 p.m. Pt and...

Get ready for what looks to be a really funny Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony, which will keep us in stiches for some time. The show, which will not be live from the Santa Monica Beach this year due to Covid, has tapped SNL’s Melissa Villaseñor to host this year’s 2021 edition.
Villaseñor, who cut her teeth on the stand-up circuit here in Los Angeles, and was further propelled by being a semifinalist on the 2011 edition of America’s Got Talent before landing on the SNL cast, is famed for her impersonations of such celebrities as Owen Wilson, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, Rep. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is typically a big live event that happens every spring, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, those plans were postponed. In July, the Rock Hall decided to make it a virtual event and announced that it would restructure its schedule going forward and start hosting the Induction Ceremony in the fall starting next year (with a return to Cleveland and, hopefully, a live audience).
But the show will continue virtually, with the 2020 edition set to debut this Saturday, November 7th at 8 p.

As Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert both pointed out during Wednesday night’s powerful Jersey 4 Jersey benefit broadcast, the great, unfairly maligned state of New Jersey has taken repeated blows over the last couple of decades, including the death of more than 700 residents on 9/11, and $30 billion worth of damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Now, the Jersey death toll from Covid-19 has reached 5,000, making it the second-hardest-hit state in the union. “I’m never more proud of this state than when we have our backs up against the wall,” Stewart said,...

Joel McHale isn’t surprised that Carole Baskin, one of the key subjects in Netflix’s smash hit docuseries “Tiger King,” refused to appear in his reunion special, “The Tiger King and I.”
Baskin has heavily criticized her portrayal on “Tiger King,” which pretty substantially laid out the case for why many people believe she was involved in the death of her first husband, Don Lewis — including Lewis’ own family.
“That whole phenomenon whether she has killed her husband has also taken on a huge life of itself,” McHale told Variety on Sunday during an Instagram Live interview. “It’s not surprising they’re not very cooperative at all.”
Does McHale believe she did it? He’s not sure — but at least based on the documentary, “she probably did.”

Just because the iHeart Radio Music Awards aren’t happening doesn’t mean the music has to stop.

Aubrey Plaza will return as host of the Spirit Awards, Film Independent’s marquee indie film awards show that is set for February 8, 2020 live on IFC from the beach just north of the Santa Monica Pier. Plaza debuted as host for last year’s Spirits, when she took over duties from John Mulaney and Nick Kroll, who had co-hosted event for the past two years.
“At a time when the world is so bitterly divided and civil discourse is almost impossible, it’s nice we can all agree that Aubrey Plaza is the greatest host in the history of hosting,” said Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent, in making the announcement Thursday. “We are thrilled to have her back.”
The Spirits will be executive produced and directed by Joel Gallen of Tenth Planet Productions. Shawn Davis and Rick Austin are producers, and Danielle Federico and Andrew Schaff are co-producers.

At the Comedy Central Roast of Alec Baldwin, the actor’s daughter Ireland finally got the chance to get back at him for that infamous 2007 voicemail in which he called her a “rude, thoughtless little pig.”
“It’s good to be here. I almost didn’t even know about it, because I haven’t checked my voicemails from my dad from the last 12 years,” the model and actress quipped in a video clip of the roast, which you can watch above.
The roast was taped on Sept. 7 and simulcast on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Comedy Central, Cmt, MTV, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1.

The temperature was unusually high in the Saban Theatre Saturday night, and the jokes were sizzling too. On center stage was Comedy Central’s latest roast-ee, Alec Baldwin, for tonight’s taping of the Roast of Alec Baldwin.
Since all of the evening’s roasters were also fair game for hard-jabbing punch lines, a round of applause for bravery should go to host Sean Hayes and roasters Ken Jeong, Chris Redd, Jeff Ross (also a co-executive producer of the roast), Blake Griffin, Nikki Glaser, Robert De Niro, Caitlyn Jenner, Adam Carolla and Caroline Rhea.
Glaser, who took plenty of hits for her two-left-feet turn as a contestant on Dancing With the Stars,” offered mock delight at getting the chance to meet “Justin Bieber’s wife’s oldest, fattest uncle.”
Special kudos to De Niro, because, as Hayes pointed out at the top of the show, the Hollywood legend was “the...

The cable network had Baldwin himself reveal the lineup with a video announcement Monday, which you can view above. Actually, based on that footage, it’s possible the “30 Rock” alum has no idea who is roasting him — so this will be interesting.

The morning after the MTV Movie & TV Awards last week, actor Harold Perrineau tweeted a pointed question to the network and the show’s host: “Did you really hire Murray Miller as a writer after [he was] accused of raping a minor?”
Perrineau, the star of “Lost” and “Claws,” had a very personal stake in the matter: One of his daughters was the minor in question. But prosecutors have declined to prosecute Miller, a writer whose credits include HBO’s “Girls,” and he has denied any wrongdoing.
Miller’s situation raises questions about what should happen to Hollywood men publicly accused of serious crimes, but never convicted or charged: Should they be blacklisted forever? Or allowed to go back to work?
But MTV’s hiring also raised questions from people inside the production who were blindsided by his involvement. Several show insiders said Miller didn’t work with other writers, and that...
