Randy Meisner, the founding bassist for The Eagles and the vocalist on their hit song “Take It to the Limit,” is dead at 77 years old.
Confirmation of Meisner’s passing came on Thursday in the form of a post made to the blog on The Eagles’ website. According to the statement, Meisner died on the evening of Wednesday, July 26th, due to complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (Copd).
“Randy was an integral part of The Eagles and instrumental in the early success of the band,” the statement read. “His vocal range was astonishing, as is evident on his signature ballad, ‘Take It to the Limit.’”
Born Randall Herman Meisner in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on March 8th, 1946, Meisner began playing guitar after he saw Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan Show in the late ‘50s. By the time he was in high school, he had picked up the bass guitar and...

Randy Meisner, the bassist and founding member of the Eagles who sang lead vocal on the band’s first big hit, “Take It to the Limit,” has died. He was 77.
Meisner died Wednesday night in Los Angeles of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the Eagles announced on their website.

The shows were over, but for Phil Kaufman, the headache was just beginning. Then the road manager for the Flying Burrito Brothers, one of the bands credited with finding the common ground between rock & roll and honky-tonk country, Kaufman had just returned home to Los Angeles, after some Burrito-related work in 1969. In the trunk of his Ford Country Squire station wagon were the embroidered cowboy suits the band had worn onstage and on the cover of its first album, The Gilded Place of Sin. Named after Nudie Cohn, the...

Rusty Young, the cofounder of Poco and only member to last though its entire five-decade history, died Wednesday at 75 of a heart attack at his Davisville, Missouri home, a representative confirmed.
“I just received word that my friend Rusty Young has passed away and crossed that line into eternity,” cofounder Richie Furay said in a statement. “My heart is saddened; he was a dear and longtime friend who help me pioneer and create a new Southern California musical sound called ‘country rock.’ He was an innovator on the steel guitar and carried the name Poco on for more than 50 years. Our friendship was real and he will be deeply missed. My prayers are with his wife, Mary, and his children Sara and Will.”
Poco and Young continued to tour through March 2020, finally derailed by the pandemic. The group was formed in 1968 by Young and ex-Buffalo Springfield members Furay and Jim Messina.

Rusty Young — co-founder, singer, and multi-instrumentalist with the pioneering country-rock band Poco — died April 14th of a heart attack. Young, who was 75, passed away at his home in Davisville, Missouri. His death was confirmed by a spokesperson, Mike Farley.
In Poco, Young made his name and reputation as one of the first musicians to integrate a pedal steel guitar, then largely associated with country, into rock & roll. Young’s spunky playing enriched the band’s goal of fusing two seemingly disparate genres, and on Poco standards like “A Good Feelin’ to Know,...

Ace Frehley has never been very open about his political leanings, but that changed in a recent interview with the Cassius Morris Show (via Blabbermouth) when his cover of the Cream song “Politician” from his new LP Origins, Vol. 2 came up.
“I don’t think politics and rock & roll mix — in my opinion,” said the former Kiss guitarist. “And I try to stay away from that as much as I can. I mean, once in a while, I’ll make a crack. I will say I’m a Trump supporter.

Occasionally a high-profile film or TV documentary arrives at just the right time to appear as if it were created to address the frustrations created by another high-profile documentary, however coincidental the timing. That’s certainly the case with Alison Ellwood’s “Laurel Canyon,” a feature-length doc about the Los Angeles rock scene of the ‘60s and ‘70s that’s airing as a two-parter on Epix on May 31 and June 7. It’s not exactly an “answer song” to “Echo in the Canyon,” a much-debated 2018 theatrical release that covered a lot of the same ground, but it does address a few important questions left hanging by its predecessor. Like: “Where the hell was Joni Mitchell?” She’s in this one — there are two shots of her within the first minute of the credit sequence, to immediately reassure us there will be ladies of, and in, the canyon this time around.

Laurel Canyon, the two-part docuseries Alison Elwood directed for Epix, opens as the Los Angeles folk music scene went electric and The Byrds found a place to nest. Rock and roller Bobby Darrin put a backbeat to folk tunes in the early ‘60s, but his then-guitarist Jim “Roger” McGuinn transformed the genre into folk rock by electrifying Bob Dylan songs with an electric 12-string Rickenbacker when he formed the Byrds. The band, which also included future David Crosby, Gene Clark, Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman, was known for a short while as “The American Beatles.” The Byrds put out one of the first psychedelic rock songs, and went on to create country rock.
They were also one of the first groups to move into the woody enclave above Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip, starting with their then-19-year-old bass player. They would soon be joined by The Monkees, The Mamas & The Papas,...

Wild Honey Orchestra: Buffalo Springfield tribute Alex Theatre, Glendale CA February 17, 2018
The Wild Honey Foundation started putting on themed benefit concerts a quarter century ago and was revived a few years back, now benefitting the Autism Think Tank. A collection of superb Los Angeles-based musicians with extensive résumés comes together, led by guitarist Rob Laufer (Johnny Cash, George Martin, Cheap Trick, etc.) as The Wild Honey Orchestra to back special guest stars (many, but not all, also L.A.-based) and augment existing bands, this year performing songs of Buffalo Springfield, the band that shot Stephen Stills, Neil Young, and Richie Furay (Poco, Souther-Hillman-Furay Band) -- along with bassist Bruce Palmer (later Jim Messina) and drummer Dewey Martin -- to fame in the late '60s.

The highly-anticipated album, A Tribute to Dan Fogelberg, is now available on CD, digital and streaming platforms. Released worldwide through BMG, sales will benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation (Pcf), a cause near and dear to Dan’s wife, Jean Fogelberg.
A Tribute To Dan Fogelberg
In 2008, a year after Dan Fogelberg passed away from prostate cancer, Jean released “Sometimes A Song”, a Valentine’s Day gift to her from Dan, and donated proceeds to Pcf. Each year since then she has designed the annual Pcf Holiday Cards to help raise money and awareness.
In 2010, Jean put together a production dream team of some of Dan’s long-time friends, including producer Norbert Putnam; mega manager Irving Azoff; and concert promoter Chuck Morris. Together they gathered some of the industry’s leading musicians and vocalists to record an album honoring Dan. Included in the stellar lineup are Garth Brooks, Zac Brown, Jimmy Buffett,...

Yes, I have too much time on my hands. Here's a new feature that was fun to put together (though quite time-consuming, which makes me worry about my ability to do this every month). I look back at rock, pop, and R&B albums that came out five years ago, ten years ago, etc.

Buffalo Springfield: Again (Atco)
There was much chaos surrounding the creation of this quintet 's second album. Bassist Bruce Palmer, in some ways the soul of the band, was unavailable due to a drug charge deportation, and a string of session players took his place. Stephen Stills, who saw himself as the leader of the group, was feuding with Neil Young, who considered himself an equal, and Young actually quit -- but returned. And that's without getting into the fiasco that was the band's management team.

Buffalo Springfield's plans for a 2012 tour have been scrapped, according to Richie Furay. The rock group were originally set to play a series of dates last year, but later decided to postpone until early 2012. They later announced that the tour was postponed once again for later in the year. However, Furay has revealed that no arrangement has been agreed, and now predicts no tour will occur this year. "I was actually told, 'We're doing this 30-day tour'," he told radio station Wbai. "And, you know, Neil is just fickle, and even though it boils down to all three of us making a decision, without the three of us, really there can't (more)...

Well, that was fun while it lasted. The short-lived magic of the rebooted Buffalo Springfield is now abruptly over. After reuniting for the first time since 1968 for a benefit concert in 2010 and a Bonnaroo performance last summer, the Neil Young-fronted fivesome has canceled an upcoming tour and is apparently once again disbanded, according to guitarist Richie Furay. No official reason for the band's off-again status has been given at this point. But Furay hinted in a recent radio interview with Wbai that Neil Young, in characteristic Neil Young fashion, flaked: “I was actually told, ‘We’re doing ...

As is the case every year, I start reading year-end lists posted by trusted peers/journalists and discover I've missed plenty of deserving culture. With the glut of films, music, theater, TV shows, books, et al. on numerous websites, TV screens, bookshelves, and periodicals, it's fairly easy. Truth be told, in addition to P.J. Harvey's much-deserved kudos, other women singers/songwriters/bands really stepped up their game this year, making many top ten year-end lists, and I missed out on discovering some of them. With that in mind, here's some additions to my 2011 year's end list.

Buffalo Springfield have once again postponed their reunion tour. Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay were originally scheduled to play a series of dates this fall, but ultimately decided to wait until early 2012. Back in 1967, Buffalo Springfield was booked to play the Newport Folk Festival. Bands break-up or go on hiatus all the time; reunions have almost become a standard for cult acts, particularly after big 10th or 20th anniversaries. Try 43 years on for size. Rumors have been circling the web regarding the highly anticipated Bonnaroo music festival for about a month, and now the official line-up has been released.
In January, someone with too much time on their hands threw together a fake line-up for the Manchester, Tn festival including the likes of U2, Lil' Wayne, The Strokes and Drake.
There are more than a few common threads (Lil' Wayne! Girl Talk! Florence + The Machine!) between the fake and real line-ups, but we are bummed that Drake didn't make the cut. Eminem taking top billing was a nice surprise, though.
