- His father ran a printing shop, and he helped him proofread galleys as a child.
- He attended Villanova University, where he heard racist jeers when students and faculty learned he wanted to become a writer. He dropped out of college his junior year and joined the Army. He continued his education at La Salle College (now a university) in Philadelphia, taking evening classes while working as a college counselor and city housing inspector. In his free time, he wrote short stories and plays, and co-founded a theater group.

- Survived by his wife, his son, David, his step-son, Kamau, his daughter-in-law, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
- What I didn't know before the screenplay of A Soldier's Story (1984) was that writing for films is like riding in a bus where every traveler (justifiably) has a say in where the bus (movie) is going. Writing plays is like riding a motorcycle - you are in charge of where the play goes - and while you may have someone enjoying the trip with you, (a producer or director) motorcycles can only hold a few riders.
