*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Tricoast Worldwide via Cloutcom. Director/writer: Russell Friedenberg. Cast: Zane Holtz, Glen Powell, Phil Burke and Rudy Youngblood. Wind Walkers is based on an ancient Native American legend - a wendigo. Mother Nature has created another monster, which is a curse of "the white man." The film offers a weak message on the environment and possibly on the white man's foreign incursions. There is so much white guilt to wade into. As well, the film's pacing is unusually slow and any real conflict is only introduced just past the one hour mark. The remainder of the film is filled full of inane interactions and repetitive dialogue sequences. Some scenes offer nothing, at all. Many scenes, despite the gorgeous cinematography, appear washed out or overly dark. And, the Wind Walkers is not recommended even for the most patient, or masochist of horror fans.

From the films from actor/writer/director Russell Friedenberg that I have seen, it seems – at least to me – like he has a fascination with three things: Native American culture; the human psyche and the personal demons we all have; and the idea of the stranger among us (even if that “stranger” is familiar to us). With Wind Walkers he combines all three subjects in a story that follows group of friends and family as they descend into the Everglades swamplands for their annual hunting trip, only to discover that they are the ones being hunted by a malevolent entity tracking them through the Everglades…

"There’s the idea that they’ve brought back something from a foreign country but the challenge for the viewer is did they bring it back or has it always been here?”
One of the most hotly anticipated films at this year’s Frightfest, Wind Walkers is a tale of indigenous American cultures, centuries old curses, transgressions forgotten and repeated, invasion, infection and the damage done by war. It’s the first venture into horror for writer/director Russell Friedenberg, who took time out from travelling in the run-up to the festival to talk to us about the ideas behind the film and what it took to make it happen.
Russell’s first degree is in history and his father was a historian; it’s clear that an awareness of America’s past has always been important in his life, and he’s long had an interest in indigenous cultures.

A group of friends and family descend into the Everglades swamplands for their annual hunting trip only to discover that they are the ones being hunted. A malevolent entity is tracking them and they begin to realise one of their party may be possessed by something brought home from a tour of duty in the Middle East – a demon of war so horrible and deadly they are unaware of its devilish presence. Tagline: "A new killer, born of war, riding the wind." A hunting trip goes wrong in Russell Friedenberg's Wind Walkers. This film, which was shot in the Florida Everglades, brings an ancient Native American legend to the screen, in 2015. From director Russell Fridenberg and starring Glen Powell (April Apocalypse) and Zane Holtz (Vampires Suck), Wind Walkers are spirits, who can possess the living. These spirits come to life in the first trailer for the film, found here. For more on the story, this hunting party is under attack. Their lodge is robbed and destroyed. Then, one in their group disappears into the wilderness. More and more from the group disappear, until they return hungry for flesh. Now, the survivors must escape, or face an eternity of rot in the swamps. The first trailer for Wind Walkers is a compelling one. Full of action sequences and exterior shots, the trailer...

Among Ravens isn’t nearly as deep as it thinks it is. Centering on a group of friends who reunite at a lakehouse for their annual Fourth of July get-together, it shoots for the wit and profundity of The Big Chill, but as the film progresses, it soon becomes clear that directors Russell Friedenberg and Randy Redroad are grappling around in the dark for a greater meaning that they lack the ability to articulate. So, instead of providing coherent ideas about the nature of aging, marriage, happiness and family, Among Ravens plays in disappointingly shallow waters, presenting viewers with one-note characters and a borderline nauseating amount of clunky bird metaphors. Unfortunately, just because it sounds profound, that doesn’t mean it actually is.
On hand to provide some of the film’s most aggravatingly artificial lines is Joey (Johnny Sequoyah), a 10-year-old girl whose development literally begins and ends at precocious.

Among Ravens wants to be the The Big Chill with Gen-x assholes, a weird ambition.
It's the kind of film in which the setup is conveyed via a pre-dinner toast and couples pick fights at the table. Directed by Russell Friedenberg and Randy Redroad with the nuanced staging of little kids pushing the heads of dolls together ("Now, you two kiss!"), the film concerns an annoying group of obvious, badly written stereotypes that meets for an annual lake-house douche huddle. To wit: There's a male life coach assembled from 1990s Burning Man clichés, who looks like Buddy Hackett with Jackson Galaxy sideburns, beaded chokers, and a fucking ukulele. ("You just gotta keep it real," he says, in lieu of life advice.)

Sometimes it's through the eyes of a child that the true motivations and feelings of the adults around them are revealed. And that seems to be the case in "Among Ravens," an ensemble dramedy set over the course of a July 4th weekend. Written by Russell Friedenberg, who also-co directs with Randy Redroad, the film stars Amy Smart, Johnny Sequoyah, Joshua Leonard, Natalie Imbruglia and more, with the story following former college radical Wendy and trust fund baby Ellis, whose marriage is not what it appears to be on the outside. And Ellis' daughter Joey witnesses how it unfolds over the holiday weekend, as the couple invites a handful of guests to their home including nature photographer Chad, who bonds with Joey, and has secrets of his own. And below you can see how Joey isn't so easily placated by the metaphors offered by those around her. "Among Ravens" premiered...

Today, We Got This Covered is happy to bring you an exclusive look at Gravitas’ upcoming comedic drama Among Ravens, which will be releasing on-demand and in theaters on July 18th. In the clip, characters Wendy (Amy Smart) and Emma (Victoria Smurfit) examine an elusive art gallery piece and discuss Emma’s reaction to her husband Saul (Russell Friedenberg) suddenly wanting to have children. The scene seems a good indicator of Among Ravens as a whole, spicing a very serious and sad topic with some much-appreciated humor.

In addition to Smart, Smurfit and Friedenberg, young Believe actress Johnny Sequoyah, Joshua Leonard, Will McCormack, Christian Campbell and Natalie Imbruglia have roles. The project is written by Russell Friedenberg, with Randy Redroad taking lead as director. The comedy “concerns a group of friends whose lives are changed by their encounter with a strange nature photographer.” The pair will be playing a “troubled married couple hosting a group of friends at a Fourth of July weekend reunion.” Will McCormack will be playing the mysterious photographer, with Christian Campbell, Friedenberg, Victoria Smurfit rounding out the cast of friends. Natalie Imbruglia (yes, she acts too!), Calum Grant and Castille Landon have also been cast in various roles as well.
Although Smart and Leonard – who got his start in The Blair Witch Project – have had successful careers the past few years, I can’t really say that their presence in this film does little to excite.

Vera Farmiga has signed on to Daniel Calparsoro’s revenge indie Western A Thousand Guns, the movie that’s going to be directed by Spanish director Calparsoro and is written by Russell Friedenberg.
Farmiga seems to be very busy nowadays, since we all had a chance to hear she’s preparing her directorial debut with the adaptation of This Dark World, based on the memoir by Carolyn Briggs. Good for her!
But let’s get back to A Thousand Guns! Not much is known of the plot except that “centers on a preacher’s wife and her journey of revenge” and that the story is actually about a young mother who begins to question the “religious dogma” that she has embraced all of her life.
So, as you see, our lovely Farmiga will play a missionary turned powerful gunslinger in this rogue western that’s set “in a world where...

Vera Farmiga – last seen seducing George Clooney in Up The Air (and bagging an Oscar nomination in the process) is strapping on six-shooters to star in a Western. She’s signed on to lead A Thousand Guns for Prominent Pictures.Farmiga will play a preacher’s wife named Martha Jane Feuer who is on a quest for revenge after her child is murdered. But she’s hampered by a strange gypsy woman and a demonic gun. Sounds like something Sam Raimi would dream up...Russell Friedenberg wrote the script and Spanish director Daniel Calparsoro will be in the big folding chair. There’s no word on when it’ll start shooting, particularly as Farmiga’s schedule is fairly busy between acting as Wallis Simpson in abdication tale We and making her directorial debut with religious drama Higher Ground.

Nothing makes me happy in quite the same was as seeing a small, odd western come together with a top-notch cast. I've got new hope for a film called A Thousand Guns, based in part on the fact that Vera Farmiga has just signed on. The film, which is about "a preacher's wife and her journey of revenge," has a few fun-sounding elements, like a demon gun called El Rojo and a band of seemingly ninja-like assassins. And in the middle of it all is Farmiga, as a missionary turned powerful gunslinger. Variety says that Daniel Calparsoso (Guerreros) is directing from Russell Friedenberg's script. The film is set up at a new company, Prominent Pictures, with Frozen River producer Heather Rae as one of the chief officers. The trade doesn't offer a lot of info on the film, but the Iron Circle Pictures website has plenty. From there comes this text,...

It’s interesting to see Vera Farmiga’s career blossom in Hollywood. I first saw her on the crime TV show “Uc: Undercover” co-starring alongside Jon Seda, who has since gone to star in HBO’s “The Pacific”. She parlayed that into another fantastic TV crime show, the American remake of “Touching Evil” with current “Burn Notice” star Jeffrey Donovan. But like “Undercover”, the American public didn’t appreciate “Evil”, and it was canceled after only one year. Since then, Farmiga has carved out a fantastic career on the big screen in big-budget Hollywood actioners like “The Departed” and “Running Scared”, as well as low-budget indies you’ve never heard of like “Never Forever” and “Quid Pro Quo”. Her latest is the indie Western “A Thousand Guns”, where she’ll play the wife of a preacher who goes on a journey of revenge. The movie will be directed by Spaniard...

Once a vehicle for director Paco Plaza ( Rec , Rec 2 ), Circus is now set to be directed by Daniel Calparsoro. Set in the Nevada desert, the film tells of a family who become the main attraction of a malevolent circus. Calparsoro is reportedly in pre-production on a horror film called The Cold which follows a group of friends on a hunting trip who confront their war torn past and a devilish secret. Russell Friedenberg penned that one. No word yet as to what stage of the game Circus is in. Filmax is producing.

The bottom line: An experiment in psychedelic indie road-trip filmmaking that’s sure to provoke thought, but that’s also bound to confuse, disorient, and maybe lose you on the way.
From the moment ibid starts, you can tell you’re in for a different kind of film. And it doesn’t even have wto do with the slow-moving march through Trinity Psychiatric Center as we follow a stern-eyed, pigtailed nurse past all varieties of mentally handicapped patients. I think it has more to do with the subdued, drab color palette, and the general blankness of the mise-en-scéne. There’s a lot of white and blank space around the characters, a lot of emptiness that surrounds them, both inside the hospital and out. The movie is,...
