Editor, composer, director and producer John Ottman is teaming with film and music industry executive David Franco to develop a dramatic biopic based on the life of world-renowned Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi.
The project, written by Kevin Lund and Tj Scott, has had been long-gestating, beginning 20 years ago when Ron Howard was set to direct. After many unsuccessful attempts, including with members of the famous Italian filmmaking De Laurentiis family in 2008, the project needed a new vision.
In 2018, Franco, the music producer on previous versions, brought the script to Ottman, who he saw as the man “destined to bring Vivaldi to life.” “There’s simply no talent more suited to craft this remarkable story,” he says.
Ottman immediately got to work re-shaping the story with the writers, before the Covid-19 pandemic stalled the project once again. Now, it’s finally back on track. “After all these years, we’ve never been more confident.

Apple TV+’s “Franklin,” which stars Michael Douglas, has its world premiere at series festival Canneseries on April 10 in Cannes, France. The show is produced by ITV Studios America and Apple Studios. Variety spoke to Philippe Maigret, president and managing director, ITV Studios America, who is an executive producer on the period drama.
“Franklin’s” journey to the screen began when producer Tony Krantz optioned Stacy Schiff’s book “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America.” Starting in December 1776, “A Great Improvisation” follows Benjamin Franklin, best known as an inventor, as he travels from Britain’s colonies in America on a secret mission to enlist France’s support in the War of Independence, which the Americans are losing.
In 2017, Krantz, who had a first-look deal with ITV Studios America through his company Flame Ventures, suggested that Maigret read the book. “We immediately realized we shared the same...

When Is The Beauty Queen Of Jerusalem Season 2 Coming? Well, Netflix’s ‘The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem’ is a captivating Israeli historical drama series that immerses viewers in the rich tapestry of the Armoza family’s lives across different generations.
The show takes a non-linear approach to storytelling, centering around Gabriel Armoza, his wife Rosa Armoza, and their three daughters: Luna, Rivka, and Rachel. Gabriel’s profound favoritism towards Luna becomes a source of bitterness for Rosa, as he has never shown her the same level of affection.
This contrasting dynamic creates numerous complications within the family, leading to a deeply engaging narrative.
The series features stellar performances by Swell Ariel Or, Michael Aloni, Hila Saada, and Aylam Orian and is brought to life by the creative minds of Shlomo Mashiach, Ester Namdar Tamam, and Oded Davidoff.

As episodic anthologies continue to thrive, one of the early adopters is saying goodbye. Joe Swanberg’s Netflix comedy series tracks the ever-evolving love lives of Chicago residents from the Loop to Logan Square, but Season 3 of “Easy” will be its last.
“The support, flexibility, and trust that Netflix provided, combined with their global reach, made this a completely unique experiment,” Swanberg said in a statement. “The fact that I was able to collaborate with so many of my favorite actors took an already dreamy experience to the next level. I couldn’t be more proud of the new season, and I can’t wait to share it.”
Behind the series’ early appeal was its cast, and plenty of favorites are returning for the final run. Elizabeth Reaser (“The Haunting of Hill House”) and Michael Chernus (“Orange is the New Black”) continue exploring the joys and pains of an open...

James Franco's modest project The Disaster Artist took in a respectable $6.4 million as it went into wide release over the weekend, but it couldn't catch up to Coco, which finished at the top for the third weekend in a row. It also finished behind Justice League and Wonder, another small-budget hit.

James Franco's The Disaster Artist is the latest specialty release to thrive at the U.S. box office.
Shooting up the chart to No. 4 in its second frame, the dramedy grossed $6.4 million as it expanded nationwide into 840 theaters over the weekend for an early total of $8 million. A24 is handling the film domestically, while New Line/Warner Bros. — where the project was initially developed — has overseas duties.

Nerve is a paranoid suspenser about an extreme on-line game as well as a look at the ridiculousness of our contemporary fame-obsessed culture. Taking place throughout a single night and crafted with precision by co-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, this timely story is an enjoyable watch which at times strains credibility, but it’s clever and well-paced. While Nerve can’t escape from the limitations of its premise and builds to an unsatisfying conclusion, it’s better than expected.
Nerve tells of 18-year old, risk-averse high school photographer Venus (or ‘Vee’ – played by 25-year old Emma Roberts) who lives with her single nurse mom (Juliette Lewis) and had a brother who died two years earlier. A humiliating encounter with the football stud she has a crush on inspires her to join her more popular best friend Sydney (27-year old Emily Meade) in playing Nerve, a game where she can...

Late screenwriting guru Syd Field often wrote in his Bibles for wannabe film scribes that if the writer doesn’t grab the viewer in the first 10 minutes (or the first 10 pages), then there’s no reason to stay with the story. Often these introductory minutes indicate the kind of story we are about to see, and illuminate important aspects of the protagonist whose journey we will follow. If one judges Boychoir from its opening scenes, few would want to stick around to see how the rest of the story unfolds.
The film begins going steadily through a checklist of conventions for stories about a downtrodden young protagonist with prodigal talent. The first shot of the film is of Stet, played by newcomer Garrett Wareing, crouching behind a train as it rattles through a Texas town. (If one was looking for a more trite way to show that the main character...

If anything is to be gleaned from Jonathan Levine's Warm Bodies, it's that looking good and having a record collection can get you out of a lot of trouble.
Drawing on the influx of tales of forbidden love by way of Twilight and Romeo and Juliet, Warm Bodies aims to be the post-apocalypse rom-com version of both. It flits through different tones and themes like a magpie with Add, creating a frantic quality to the film which is almost impressive seeing as it drags its feet throughout the entire plot. And as the title suggests, Warm Bodies gets warm but never manages to generate any heat.
This is practically problematic as Levine's previous effort in genre film was the little-seen but much love pseudo-slasher All the Boys Love Mandy Lane,...

While I've heard about the book Warm Bodies for over a year, it has always been presented to me as "Twilight with zombies," and though I don't have a problem with Twilight (much to the chagrin of many of my friends), that's not the endorsement I've been looking for. I need more comparisons: Is it like Zombieland, snarky and funny? Is it like Fido, where the zombies become domesticated and friendly? The trailer for the new big-screen adaptation didn't really indicate either way.
In truth, Warm Bodies is a bit of both and a lot of neither.
The movie opens with R (Nicholas Hoult) lamenting his miserable, boring existence. He shuffles around an airport terminal filled with other zombies, day in and day out, occasionally having half-intelligent grunting matches with his "best friend,...

Chicago – For the one millionth time in movie history, zombies walk among us in “Warm Bodies.” But this isn’t an ordinary entry in the undead genre, this has a load of romance, symbolism and John Malkovich. “It” couple Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer give a whole new meaning to going steady.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This is written and directed by the odd Jonathan Levine (“50/50”), who never met a movie theme he can’t deconstruct. “Warm Bodies” is a trenchant allegory in the mold of George Romero – using the undead as symbol for modern humanity – and doesn’t disappoint in showing the humorous and warm fuzzy side of the slow moving undead. With some sly winking at the camera, Levine formulates a Valentine’s Day treat which should be the go-to movie for the big night, for it is both romantic and unromantic, which pretty much defines the expectations for V-Day.
