In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.
As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.
McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

If Doctor Who fans ever felt hard done by during any of the show’s previous big anniversaries then the 60th is here to soothe spirits, hand out cherished gifts, and generally make a bloody big hair-ruffling fuss of the lot of us.
First came news of David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s return in three anniversary specials, then came the ‘roughly 8 million episodes of Doctor Who are coming to BBC iPlayer on November 1’ announcement, then they brought back Doctor Who Confidential under a different name, and now…
…three Classic era Doctors are returning alongside eight former Doctor Who Companions (plus The Sarah Jane Adventures’ Clyde Langer) for new series Tales of the Tardis.
New Scenes, Classic Who Cast
Not a behind-the-scenes documentary, and not standalone adventures, the six-part series will pair up the stars of classic Who acting in new scenes together, in character, wrapped around episodes from six existing serials.

How each Doctor responds to the Daleks for the first time reveals something about them...
Pearl Mackie was announced as the new companion for Doctor Who Series 10 back in April, with a specially filmed clip broadcast during Match Of The Day's Fa Cup semi-final. Aside from befuddling Gary Lineker, the purpose of a trailer like this, as opposed to a press release or a lavish announcement programme, is to show a character in action, and there was really no better way to define the character of Bill Potts than to show how she acted in the face of the Daleks.
See related The Man In The High Castle season 2: new trailer
The Daleks are almost as old as the show itself and different Doctors respond to them in different ways. In some eras, Dalek stories have been an early fixture of a new Doctor’s run,...

Thunderbirds Are Go! returned to our screens tonight (April 4), leaving viewers wondering whether it could top the 1960s original.
The classic theme tune and countdown open the show but there are no strings in sight for this version of Gerry Anderson's story, as the Tracy brothers move to complete CGI animation.
Initial reaction to images released of the brothers weren't fantastic - but what did Twitter think of it on-screen? Digital Spy rounds up viewers' opinions here:
Episode one drew favourable opinions, with many praising it for being a programme that the entire family can enjoy:
Hats off to the Thunderbirds remake. My show was the one I first saw in 1965. But the new one's smart & inventive & fun & I'm glad it's here

Thunderbirds Are Go! has an action-packed launch, but its script and CG are far from top-notch. Will the revamp live up to its potential?
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Ring Of Fire
Not only are the Thunderbirds gang back, they’ve also been appended with “are go!” - and boy, do they ever go. Sylvia and Gerry Anderson’s much-loved show, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, screeches and blasts its way on to the small screen and doesn’t hold up for 45 minutes or so.
The puppets, and their charm it has to be said, may have been replaced by computer-generated characters, but the iconic ships and Tracy Island remain, for the most part, as beautiful standing-set models produced by Weta (The Lord Of The Rings).
This first instalment, which sees two episodes aired together as one, neatly introduces to the International Rescue troupe. All the Tracy brothers remain, though...

The world of Doctor Who has changed greatly in the space of just 10 years. The cast and crew have almost completely been replaced since 2005, including a number of new actors to play the errant Time Lord and his companions.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.
The Cast
After his three-month on-screen stint as the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's career continued in much the same vein, taking in theatre, interesting television roles and the odd blockbuster.
Post-2005, the Northern actor went Stateside to take on the role of invisible man Claude in the Us series Heroes. From there, he popped up in a very amusing Doctor Who-esque cameo as Dr.

The BBC has released a Doctor Who coding game for tablets.
The Doctor and the Dalek was previously available on the Cbbc website, but will be available to download later today from Google Play, Apple and Amazon app stores.
The game, written by Phil Ford, follows Peter Capaldi's Doctor in a standalone story which sees him face some of his most dangerous enemies.
It was formed as part of the BBC's Make It Digital initiative, which aims to get people involved with digital coding and programming.
The tablet edition of the game involves four new levels which brings the story to a conclusion as the Doctor and his unlikely ally continue their quest.
It also contains new power-ups for the Doctor, such as full flight ability, fire-spreading and faster speed. These abilities can be unlocked by solving a series of coding puzzles.

Russell T Davies’ Wizards Vs Aliens will not be back on Cbbc in 2015, but may not be permanently axed...
Sadly, it seems that we won’t be seeing a 2015 series of Wizards Vs Aliens. The sci-fi/fantasy show, co-created by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford, has not been picked up for a fourth run on Cbbc.
Predictably enough, the reasons here are financial - there simply is “not enough money,” according to Mr Davies himself. That same reason was given as the cause of In The Flesh's recent cancellation, and we're crossing fingers, toes and everything else we have that a similar decision isn't made for Cbbc's exemplary Wolfblood.
We’re told to view the status of Wizards Vs Aliens as ‘on hiatus,’ so there’s hope it could return to fight another day at some point in the future.
We’ll keep you posted.

“This is the voice of WhatCulture. We know that you can hear us, Earthmen.”
Sorry, there was no other way of starting that introduction.
The Gerry Anderson shows are still fondly remembered by fans across the world, and not least amongst his output was Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. The original programme ran for two series from 1967 to 1968 and featured the indestructible Captain Scarlet and the other agents of Spectrum defending the Earth against the evil plans of the Mysterons and their human agent, Captain Black.
Captain Scarlet, like other Anderson-helmed programmes, featured puppets (or marionettes) rather than actual actors. But when fans think of the programme, they mostly recall the incredibly cool vehicles and planes. And many of those fans still have the wonderful toy Spectrum Pursuit Vehicles (SPVs) and Angel Interceptors.
The programme did return for a CGI reboot in 2005, with two sets of animated episodes; however,...

The Doctor Who series 8 disc release features a wealth of bonus material including the terrific Earth Conquest doc. Here's Pete's verdict...
If you’re reading this review, then there’s a good chance that you’ve both seen the twelve episodes that make up Peter Capaldi’s debut series and know exactly what we’re going to say about them. Series 8 of Doctor Who has been hailed by many as the best in several years, and one of the best since the show’s revival in 2005. It’s a verdict that we here at Den of Geek find it hard to argue with, frankly. From the light-hearted opener Deep Breath to the action-packed and slightly bonkers finale Death In Heaven, with thought-provoking episodes like Listen and Kill The Moon along the way, Series 8 has been a confident start to a brand new era for the world’s longest-running sci-fi programme.

I don’t know about you, but I love big ideas. After all, whatever we consume – whether it’s a movie or a TV show or a video game – has a message that it wants to communicate to you, the consumer. These messages – these big ideas, themes and theories – they're not a bad thing. I’d suggest they make entertainment so… entertaining. The hallmark of a good TV show is that it makes you think. It inspires you to keep track of overarching traits in the hope that you might spot a pattern or a hint of what’s to come.

3.5 & 3.6 Daughters Of Stone
It’s never easy to follow the departure of a major character, and with Benny having left in the previous episode Daughters Of Stone knows it has some big shoes to fill from the outset. So it’s perhaps not that surprising when Tom’s sometime-girlfriend Katie asks him to come and help out with an apparent haunting at the theatre looked after by her grandad. It’s even less surprising when, exactly ten minutes in, she witnesses Tom performing magic for the first time and the veil drops from her eyes.
As a character to replace Benny, Katie makes complete sense. Manpreet Bambra hasn’t always had a lot to work with on the show, but over three years she’s established...

The directors of Doctor Who's latest series brought back the scares in a big way. Well, fear is a superpower...
Warning: contains spoilers for every episode of the eighth series of Doctor Who.
We were promised back in August that the Peter Capaldi era of Doctor Who would mark a departure from the adventurous fairy tale approach of Matt Smith's run.
“Darker” and “edgier” are buzz words that have been applied to countless Hollywood sequels, but the eighth series actually lived up to that promise and by September, the tabloid press were dispensing think-pieces about whether or not it had become too scary for children (“scary” here standing in for “complicated” in Smith's era and “heretical” when David Tennant got a lift off a couple of angel robots in Voyage Of The Damned.)
All moral panics aside, this series brought back the scares in a big, bad way.

3.3 & 3.4 The Quantum Effect
So farewell then, Benny Sherwood.
At the series launch event in October, executive producer Phil Ford promised that there would be some shocks this series, and they don’t come much bigger than the departure of one of the series’ two lead actors.
Benny has always been Wizards Vs Aliens’ genius-in-residence, and so it makes sense that sooner or later MIT would decide to snatch him away from King’s Park High to join their ‘Gifted Young People’ programme. Of course, before he’s able to head off to America he and Tom have to deal with an old enemy and a fiendish plot to take over the world…

Cbbc’s hit show Wizards Vs Aliens is back for a third year. In case you’ve never seen it before, there are wizards, and there are aliens, and they’re antagonistic towards one another. Got it? But there’s so much more to it than that. The show was created by the minds behind The Sarah Jane Adventures, Russell T Davies and Phil Ford, and they brought with them all of the excitement, adventure and emotion of that show but with a whole new universe to play in. Davies has left for decidedly more adult pastures, leaving Ford to fly solo. Does it measure up? In a word: absolutely.

Our full review will appear on the site in due course, but suffice to say the opening adventure is a confident new start for the series, following up on last year’s climactic finale with a heady mix of action, horror, humour and some heartfelt character moments. The new series brings with it some new characters, and one or two surprises to excite the fans.

You weekly dose of Doctor Who news bites - including In The Forest Of The Night, Children In Need and a new Who-based game...
As ever, there's no shortage of Doctor Who-related news this week. Unlike our usual little updates though, there's some interesting Who happenings to report from outside the realm of plugging this weekend's episode.
First up, it's been confirmed that Doctor Who will continue its long-standing tradition of offering something a little extra for the viewers of the BBC's charity fundraising events for Children In Need. All we know from the initial story is that the The Doctor will be "helping out Pudsey" during the show on 14 November. That could mean anything, but we look forward to the sketch nonetheless.
Also in the world of Who helping kids - there's now a free-to-play educational online Doctor Who available on our computer boxes. The Doctor And The Dalek,...

While he won't be going by The Teacher anytime soon, Doctor Who's 12th Doctor will now be helping children to learn how to code. On Monday, the BBC announced a new game based on world of Doctor Who titled The Doctor and the Dalek. The game will be written by one of the show's writers, Phil Ford, and it will tell the story of the Doctor as he teams up with one of his mortal enemies, a Dalek, to save all of creation. Don't expect to play the game on a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, though—the educational game...

From The Visitation to Into The Dalek, here's a potted history of the Doctor at his least compassionate and most callous...
"Never cruel or cowardly."
That's the Terrance Dicks line that Steven Moffat referenced in The Day of the Doctor.
"He's on the top layer if you want to say a few words."
That's a line that either Steven Moffat or Phil Ford wrote for Into The Dalek. It's pretty hard to interpret that as a non-cruel statement, but then asking for consistency from Doctor Who is a vague question at best (what people regard as good Doctor Who isn't going to make for a simple Venn diagram).
For the hero of a family show, the Doctor is able to get away with some stupendously caustic and callous deeds. He's an alien genius, he grew up on planet Oxbridge, and he gets stuck into difficut situations. It's not a total shock,...

“Demons run when a Good Man goes to war,” went the ancient line. But the problem is, The Doctor is no longer sure he’s a good man. Further problem is, neither is Clara. So The Doctor’s not quite sure what he’s going to do when he’s invited to go…
Into The Dalek
By Phil Ford and Steven Moffat
Directed by Ben Wheatley
Human rebel fighter Journey Blue is about to have her ship destroyed by a Dalek saucer when The Doctor saves her by materializing the ship around her, a move for which he expects and demands a thank you. Returning her back to her command ship, he’s quickly arrested, until Journey tells them he’s a Doctor…which is lucky because they have a patient. The patient is a Dalek, who is malfunctioning. As in, it has become good – it is raving that the Daleks must be defeated.

This week, on Doctor Who: The Doctor doesn’t like soldiers, Clara is a master of the quick change, and Mr. Pink is a reader
Dalek stories are tricky. As monsters, they’re one trick ponies, but they’re also iconic and massively popular, so they’re trotted out every season or so for the Doctor to face*. They’re the Doctor’s oldest enemy (the First Doctor faced off with them in his second story), and frankly, the series ran out of new ways to use them a very long time ago. In season one of NuWho, Robert Shearman revitalized the creatures with his fantastic script for “Dalek”, but since season two, their appearances have mostly been a series of diminishing returns,...

I love “Doctor Who.” Ever since discovering it in my Netflix queue years ago (Christopher Eccleston is still my Doctor) this silly, sentimental show about a mad man in a box has enthralled me. But I — like many fans — worried that lately the wheels had been coming off. Too many cliches and consequence-free actions and terrible treatment of women. Not to mention an infinite number of reset buttons. But from the looks of tonight’s episode, “Into The Dalek,” it truly feels like writers heard the fans…and they’re beginning to patch up the holes this season. ******************* We begin where we’ve begun before. The Daleks are in pursuit of a spaceship, intent on exterminating all those inside. Flying through an asteroid field, the human pilot desperately tries to keep the ship from crashing while also trying to keep her co-pilot conscious. In the end she fails, and the...

The Daleks return and do battle with Peter Capaldi in Into The Dalek. Here's our spoiler-filled review...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
8.2 Into The Dalek
"Am I a good man?"
No episode of Doctor Who is easy. Dalek stories? They carry a heavier burden of responsibility than most. As iconic a part of the show as the Tardis, these are the creatures that are supposed to be - but rarely are - the Doctor's deadliest foe. They can blitz away Cybermen without a second thought. They have weapons that can kill in the time it takes to admire a fiftysomething man's eyebrows. They make the BBC lots of cash through toy sales. And yet it's rarely a Dalek episode that's called out as a series highlight (Remembrance Of The Daleks the most recent towering exception, Dalek running it close).
Into The Dalek stakes one hell of a claim,...

Doctor Who's newest star Samuel Anderson makes his debut in a clip from tomorrow night's episode 'Into the Dalek'.
Anderson has been cast as Danny Pink on the BBC sci-fi series - a maths teacher and former soldier who romances Clara (Jenna Coleman).
"I was so excited to join Doctor Who - it's a quintessential part of British culture and I can't believe I'm part of it," the actor said earlier this year.
"It's an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can't wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!"
'Into the Dalek' has been written by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and Phil Ford, and is directed by Kill List filmmaker Ben Wheatley.
The episode airs on Saturday at 7.30pm on BBC One.

A dinosaur, robots, and a new Doctor. What did Simon make of Peter Capaldi's series 8 debut, Deep Breath?
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
8.1 Deep Breath
Well, Peter Capaldi is really rather great. It seems logical to start there, as he's top of the list of big, beaming positives in Deep Breath, the starting point for Doctor Who series 8. From the moment he utters the word "shush" to a typically militaristic Strax, there's little doubt that the newly redesigned Tardis - now with books and dinosaur slobber - is in safe hands.
It's too early to call definitely, of course, but on the evidence of the (surprisingly) limited screen time he's given in Deep Breath, Capaldi is the Doctor we wanted him to be. Steeped in the tradition of the older Doctors, from his costume to his demeanour - noting himself that he's not got a...

The BBC have released the full list of titles, writers and directors for each of the upcoming series 8 episodes of Doctor Who. While the titles offer up a few hints as to what we should expect from Peter Capaldi’s debut year as The Doctor, it’s also clear that the series has a lot of impressive talent behind the camera too.
That includes Ben Wheatley, director of A Field in England, Kill List and Sightseers.
Also below are a batch of brand new stills from “Deep Breath”, featuring Capaldi (who makes his debut as the 12th Doctor here) and Jenna Coleman, reprising her role as Clara Oswald.
Matt Smith was the last actor to play The Doctor, and Peter Capaldi made a brief appearance as the twelfth incarnation of the character in the hugely popular “The Day of the Doctor” special. However, he didn’t officially take on the...

The BBC’s drip-feed of new Doctor Who information continues today, with this week’s Monday-brightening instalment being a full list of titles, writers, and directors for all twelve episodes of Series 8.
The list itself is largely the same as a list of rumoured titles that circulated online several weeks ago, with the only differences being the titles of episodes 10 and 11, and very small difference in the title of Episode 3. Which begs the question of whether or not there might have been a few last minute title changes in response to that list. Particularly since Into The Forest Of The Night (Episode 10) is a pretty unwieldy title when compared to the rumoured title Child’s Play. The list also reveals that we’ll be seeing Danny Pink earlier than expected (Well, those of us who haven’t watched Episode 2 yet) with his first appearance...

Synopsis lands for Into The Dalek, Peter Capaldi’s second full Doctor Who episode.
With Doctor Who series eight just over a week away, further details of the show's return continue to appear.
Today, we’ve caught wind of the synopsis for the series’ second episode Into The Dalek, which is set to reunite the Doctor with his classic enemies. Here’s the teasey summary:
“A Dalek fleet surrounds a lone rebel ship, and only the Doctor can help them now... with the Doctor facing his greatest enemy, he needs Clara by his side.
Confronted with a decision that could change the Daleks forever he is forced to examine his conscience. Will he find the answer to the question, am I a good man?”
On paper, that feels like a bit of a mix between series seven’s Cold War, which pitted the Doctor against another classic enemy in a close-quarters single ship scenario,...

Andrew argues that Doctor Who series 8 could do worse than look to Hinchcliffe/Holmes story The Ark in Space for inspiration...
4C or not 4C? (Yes, it's a cryptic start, but frankly we don't have enough production code puns on the website). Let us speculate, just for a change, about what series eight of Doctor Who holds in store.
Is Peter Capaldi's Twelth Doctor going to be a less risky version of the Sixth? Initially unlikeable, but with the audience warming to him as he progresses?
Is Clara going to become a more rounded character, with the writers raising their game to reflect the quality of Jenna Coleman's performance?
Will you read a comment along the lines of 'Actually there were twenty six seasons of Doctor Who already, so I don't see why you're referring to it as “series eight”'?
Maybe, maybe, and yes.
