Photo: 'Run Sweetheart Run' When it comes to today’s horror movies, the genre is ever-changing due to raising the stakes for the characters, having a high body count, and demonstrating awareness of unsettling circumstances that come from unheard voices or minorities. The movie was written (along with writers Keith Josef Adkins and Kelle Terrel) and directed by Shana Feste. Shana is well-known for making underrated gems like ‘Country Strong,’ the 2014 remake of ‘Endless Love,’ and ‘Hilary Swank’s ‘You’re Not You.’ The horror story has an interesting take on the dating scene in the 21st-century era and how a female can be a victim of a violent bad date. Even though the protagonist is the victim of such a predicament, she becomes her own hero of the story. The movie is released by Amazon Prime and is produced by Jason Blum from Blumhouse Productions. Things to...

Initially apprehensive when her boss insists she meet with one of his most important clients, single mom Cherie (Ella Balinska) is relieved and excited when she meets charismatic Ethan (Pilou Asbæk). The influential businessman defies expectations and sweeps Cherie off her feet. But at the end of the night, when the two are alone together, he reveals his true, violent nature. Battered and terrified, she flees for her life, beginning a relentless game of cat-and-mouse with a bloodthirsty assailant hell-bent on her utter destruction.
The first act of Shana Feste’s Run Sweetheart Run sets the tone for an extremely dark, atmospheric, and downright uncomfortable viewing experience that shows that you simply cannot trust anybody you meet; even those that seem to be totally fine. It...

When "Run Sweetheart Run" premiered at 2020's Sundance Film Festival, it made a splash for its terrifying and unique take on post-#MeToo America. Not only was it a scathing look at how dangerously misogyny can be wielded by abusive men, but despite the high-level concept, it felt deeply personal. That was intentional, as co-writer and director Shana Feste revealed in 2020 that the film was partially based on her own experience with assault.
So how does a director turn a traumatic event into a high-speed popcorn flick? We sat down with Feste for a candid and enlightening interview about the real-world horrors of "Run Sweetheart Run" and how making the film was a cathartic and exhilarating experience.
'I'm Glad It's Turned Into Something That Is Really Fun And Enjoyable And Wild'
You've previously talked about how personal this movie is for you and how it was partially inspired by your own experience.

A woman is hunted through the streets of LA in a silly Amazon thriller that offers some low-stakes fun before over-extending itself
In writer-director Shana Feste’s muddled midnight movie Run Sweetheart Run, life is a string of misogynistic slights for Cherie (Ella Balinska), a young single mother trying to make it at a male-dominated, female-assisted Los Angeles law firm. From unwanted groping on the bus to inappropriate behaviour at work, the men surrounding her are as blunt as they are unashamed of it, a familiar-to-many daily grind she’s accustomed to yet aggrieved with.
When a scheduling mishap leaves her boss double-booked for the night, Cherie is asked to take his place meeting a client, scrambling together a last-minute babysitter and a last-minute outfit. Cherie is pleasantly surprised when she meets Ethan (Borgen and Game of Thrones alum Pilou Asbæk), who is handsome and friendly, a balm after yet another day of shitty men,...

Ell Balinska doesn’t care much for method acting. When you play a character who spends the entirety of a movie running from a deranged killer who can smell your blood, that seems like a pretty healthy attitude. The 26-year-old Brit, whose mother is the former top model and Food Network host Lorraine Pascale, knows a thing or two about protecting yourself in the midst of a grueling career. Though she is covered in blood in almost every scene of chilling new movie “Run Sweetheart Run,” she learned very quickly not to take work home with her.
“It’s an artist’s temptation to want to suffer and really feel the character. There’s a tricky balance there if you do that because while these themes are very real, the story is not,” the “Charlie’s Angels” star said during a recent interview. “For two weeks after I finished shooting, I...

While the road to getting here was a lengthy one, we have finally been given our first proper look at the 2020 Sundance darling "Run Sweetheart Run." After being acquired by Amazon Studios shortly after the Utah film festival ended, it and its streaming platform, Prime Video, have been oddly silent about the film's release. However, we won't have to wait much longer to watch this buzzy mixture of social horror and survival thriller.
The trailer starts off nicely enough, with our leads Cherie (Ella Balinska) and Ethan (Pilou Asbæk) having a nice first blind date. Unfortunately, when it's time for them to reconvene at Ethan's swanky mansion, he reveals his true sinister nature. As she flees the house on foot, Cherie must fight off against her assailant and his associates while also accepting help from women who may also have been among his victims. It sadly still feels as topical...

Demi Moore was unable to come to the Venice Film Festival, which is hosting a series of virtual talks, titled “Life Through a Different Lens: Contactless Connections,” with Mastercard, which the actress launched Wednesday. But she assured the moderator that she is doing really well, and staying positive, despite the threat of Covid-19.
“I know how fortunate I am,” she said, during the conversation, accompanied by a cameoing pet and a vintage doll of Marlene Dietrich. “We are all going through this, but we are not having the same experience. I feel timid to say that, but I am finding goodness in this challenge. I tend to look for what something is giving us as opposed to what it is taking away.”
Listing favorites from “The Philadelphia Story” to “Kramer vs. Kramer,” Moore shared what has inspired her throughout her career. “When I think of ‘Indecent Proposal,’ ‘Disclosure,’ ‘G.I. Jane’ and even ‘Striptease,...

Demi Moore was only a teenager when people began noticing her very distinctive voice.
“One of my first jobs as a young girl was that I worked for a collection agency,” Moore says on the Variety and iHeart podcast The Big Ticket. “I had to make calls to people whose bills were past due — that’s when I was like 14, 15. People had already been commenting way back.”
She didn’t understand what all the fuss was about. “I knew that my voice was maybe a little lower,” Moore recalls. “I, of course, didn’t think of it as sexy or have any context for that. I thought [it was] because I had been a cheerleader for a short while, from screaming out cheers. I think it is somewhat hereditary. And probably those Marlboro Reds that I was smoking as a teenager.”
Then, is it any wonder director Shana Feste thought of Moore...

What is sexy? No, like, actually sexy? That’s the question that sparked director Shana Feste to create what would become “Dirty Diana,” her first foray into the podcast space. Not porn sexy, not heaving-bosom sexy, not boring sexy, not screaming sexy, really sexy, the kind of sexy that makes you want to, well, have sex. The kind of sexy that could make a lot of normal, everyday people want to have sex, and with their long-term partners to boot.
“Remember those HBO Sunday nights when ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Six Feet Under’ were on and you would just be so looking forward to getting in bed with your partner and watching together?” Feste said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I remember thinking after I would watch those shows, ‘Wouldn’t it be so great if we could watch something that made us want to have sex with each other afterwards?...

One of the last movies to become a success at the box office before theaters began shutting down over Covid-19 was The Invisible Man. It was yet another hit for Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions. But for every Invisible Man, there’s The Hunt. Another Blumhouse film that – after being delayed last year due to its subject matter – was then marketed for its delay as a selling point. Unfortunately, it came out in early March, which was right before the shutdown, and was eventually put on streaming platforms, where it didn’t perform terribly well.
This is the current state of movie distribution. Particularly for low-budget films like the ones made at Blumhouse. Since they don’t have the same marketing budget of a typical blockbuster, or the ability to release their stuff in theaters right now, their number one goal is to get as many eyes on the project as possible.
