The Ten Tigers of Guangdong or Kwangtung were a group of ten kung fu masters who lived in southern China during the 19th Century Qing Dynasty. At times, their fighting skills recalled the styles of the better known Henan Shaolin Monastery of Mount Song, although they had lineage to the Southern Shaolin Monastery of the Fujian Province due to the connection between these two Monasteries. While much of their reputations had been enriched by folk legends passed down from generation to generation, these ten men were highly respected and considered as the greatest boxers in the Guangdong province during the Qing era.

Zhang Dao Ling was a Chinese religious leader and the founder of the “Way of the Celestial Masters” movement of Taoism, who lived during the Eastern Han Dynasty. In essence, his followers were attracted to his faith-healing method which led them to believe in the purification of the body and the cure of illness caused by sinful-mindedness. However, Zhang Tian Shi (Celestial Master Zhang) was also a name given to him by many Taoists because of his magical skills as a healer and an exorcist. At times he was affectionately pictured as an old scholar wearing a Taoist crown and riding on a tiger.

Best known for his ultraviolence and splatter prison cult classic “Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky” and his portraying of the cocky Northern martial artist who challenged the Wing Chun master in “Ip Man” and after appearing in other kung fu movies, Louis Fan Siu Wong pretty much disappeared from the overall Hong Kong action scene. Nonetheless, he has been busy making online movies in China ever since, thanks to the advances of smartphones and 5G technology and like a cultural revolution, the online movie business phenomenon is flourishing in China like there is no tomorrow. These are usually short and disposable productions being watched by anyone on the phone or tablets and anywhere where the internet is within reach.
In his latest outing, Fan plays the leader of a squad of professional bodyguards Lung Wei assigned to protect a foreign businessman. As expected, they came under attack in which none of his members survived.

Engineer Grace Wong is kidnapped by thugs looking for her brother. Though her captors have destroyed the telephone in the room she is being held captive in, Grace is able to use her technical skills to repair the phone enough to call a random number. She gets through to slightly hapless debt collector Bob and implores him for help, setting Bob off on a mission to save a complete stranger from a mysterious group of conspirators, putting his life and relationship with his estranged son in danger.

20. Story of Ricky (Lik wong) – Starring Siu-Wong Fan as the titular character, Riki Oh, based on a manga series which eventually became an anime, marks the end of an era of Japanese exploitation flicks, before the new generation of filmmakers such as Takashi Miike took over. Unlike Miike’s movies, or other recent entries such as Tokyo Gore Police, Riki Oh’s tone borders on comedy, played up by bad voice dubbing, foolish plot lines, cartoonish gore and eccentric characters (including a one-eyed assistant warden with a hook for a hand). For a prison film, the movie never seems mean-spirited, and if anything it masquerades as a bizarre superhero flick. The effects are the main draw – Riki Oh exists simply to showcase several outlandish set pieces, ramping up the level of violence, gore and action with each new scene. Made before the days of CGI, director Lam relies simply on practical effects,...

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you for taking time to have a look at my 100 Great Kung Fu movie list and feel free to add any movies in the comment box if they don’t make my list (I have probably forgotten many movies).

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

Backed by three strong Kung Fu performers - Vincent Zhao (aka Chiu Man Chuk), Dennis To and Louis Fan - Wu Dang (大武当之天地密码) is the first martial arts film that captures the treasure of Wu Dang Kung Fu and the mysticism of Ying Yang. The director is Patrick Leung (Twin Effects 2) with Corey Yuen (Shaolin) serving as action choreographer. Also in the cast is Mini Yang and Xu Jiao.In early Republican China, rumors were going around about the treasure in Wudang Mountain. An American conspirator took his well-trained kung fu daughter to Wudang by sponsoring a Taoist martial arts competition, to steal the treasure. Out of expectation, a disciple represented Wudang to compete with other martial arts masters for the championship. During the competition,...

Kung Fu legend Jet Li and legendary director Tsui Hark reunit once again to speak about there upcoming movie “Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate”.
Both Jet and Tsui have worked many times together in the past with movie such as the Once Upon A Time In China series and The Master, i am a fan of both movies mentioned so i am looking forward to watching this.
Tsui Hark had this to say when speaking at the Peking University,
“I like wu xia films, because in the real world, we sometimes can’t express ourselves through words. However, things in the world of Wu xia can be revealed freely and romantically.” Tsui was quoted as saying. “Call me curious or crazy, what I really want is to put my Wu xia fantasies on the big silver screens. With 3D technology, a sense of realism is finally being achieved.”

Herman Yau's prequel to the excellent Ip Man films starring Donnie Yen is currently making its way through theaters in the U.S. The Legend Is Born: Ip Man focuses on the younger-day exploits of the real life Wing Chun grandmaster. This time, Yu-hang To plays the title chartacter, but many of the supporting case from the first movies returns, including Sammo Hung and Siu-wong Fan. Sammo and martial arts legend Yuen Biao have a fight scene (which is reason enough to want to see the movie) and 86-year-old Ip Chun, Ip Man's real life son, even makes an appearance.

Time for some quick, morning wuxia action. McN via The Playlist has found an official trailer, which I would call more of a teaser trailer, for Tsui Hark's new martial arts epic The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, starring Jet Li as well as Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Li Yuchun, Kwai Lun-mei, Louis Fan and Mavis Fan. The film is a remake of King Hu's Dragon Gate Inn (1966) and Raymond Lee's New Dragon Gate Inn (1992) and was shot in 3D. There are some very interesting shots in this, I thought it was worth featuring today. Check out that final scene with the huge sand tornadoes. Not exactly sure what's going on, but it looks cool! Watch the first teaser trailer for Tsui Hark's Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, via YouTube: A Ming dynasty general played by Jet Li finds himself at odds with a power-hungry eunuch,...

Last month we posted a teaser for Tsui Hark’s latest film Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate starring Jet Li. Although it was a brief thirty second clip, it had many of us excited since it marks the first collaboration between Tsui and Li since their Once Upon A Time In China series. The latest trailer for director Tsui Hark’s upcoming martial arts epic “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” looks absolutely fantastic. From a visual standpoint, the film is stunning, and I’m anxious to see what sort of kung fu madness Jet Li and his “Once Upon a Time” collaborator have cooked up. To borrow a quote from the immortal Keanu Reeves: “Whoa”. The film, which also stars Chen Kun, Zhou Xun, Louis Fan Siu-wong, Kwai Lun-mei, Mavis Fan, and Li Yu-chun, opens in China this December. Be sure to check out the clip embedded below on your way out. Last month we brought you an early teaser for Tsui Hark's latest film Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate. Admittedly, the quality wasn't great, but the style and action certainly got many of us excited. Of course, the collaboration between Tsui and Jet Li, the first since their Once Upon A Time In China films, is also a great reason for the anticipation of this film. The film stars Jet Li, Chen Kun, Zhou Xun, Louis Fan Siu-wong, Kwai Lun-mei, Mavis Fan and Li Yu-chun, and tells the story of the struggle between a Ming Dynasty general (played by Jet Li) and his rival, a powerful eunuch (played by Chen Kun). Tsui Hark's last film Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame was by far his best work in recent years, and marked a spectacular return to form for the great director. That is just one of the reasons for his new film Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate to become one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year. The collaboration between Tsui and Jet Li, the first since their Once Upon A Time In China films, is another big reason to be excited about the film. Plus it will be the first ever 3D wu xia film! Riki Oh, The Story of Ricky
Directed by Ngai Kai Lam
Written by Ngai Kai Lam
1991 – Hong Kong . Japan
Starring Siu-Wong Fan as the titular character, Riki Oh, based on a manga series which eventually became an anime, marks the end of an era of Japanese exploitation flicks, before the new generation of filmmakers such as Takashi Miike took over. Unlike Miike’s movies, or other recent entries such as Tokyo Gore Police, Riki Oh’s tone borders on comedy, played up by bad voice dubbing, foolish plot lines, cartoonish gore and eccentric characters (including a one-eye assistant warden with a hook for a hand). For a prison film, the movie never seems mean-spirited, and if anything masquerades as a bizarre superhero flick. The effects are the main draw – Riki Oh exists simply to showcase several outlandish set pieces, ramping up the level of violence, gore and action with each new scene.

Ip Man
Starring Donnie Yen, Simon Yam, Siu-Wong Fan
Directed by Wilson Yip

With the sequel getting a limited release in Us theaters (I sure hope it comes to Phoenix!), I figured why not review the original? Found it available on Netflix for streaming.

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

The ability to appreciate Donnie Yen punching people really, really fast in the face is what makes life worth living, if you ask me. Yen does just that in “Ip Man 2″, which co-stars Sammo Hung, who also acts as the film’s action choreographer. New shiny poster for the film due out later this month in Hong Kong below. A sequel to the successful “Ip Man” starring Donnie Yen, “Ip Man 2″ follows Ip Man (Yen) as he immigrates to Hong Kong in 1949 after the struggles against the Japanese in the first film. In Hong Kong, Ip Man attempts to propagate his discipline of Wing Chun martial arts to the world, but is hampered by jealous martial arts rivals and the oppressive British. Starring Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Darren Shahlavi, Siu-Wong Fan, Lynn Hung, Ka Tung Lam, Xiaoming Huang, Kent Cheng, Yu-Hang To , Amber Chia, Stefan Morawietz, and directed by Wilson Yip.

Can’t get enough Donnie Yen punching people really, really fast in the face? You’re in luck. There are two behind-the-scenes “production diaries” on Yen’s upcoming “Ip Man 2″ (via Kung Fu Cinema) to dig your teeth into. The martial arts film will co-star Sammo Hung, who also does double duty as action choreographer. From the looks of these two diaries, they should probably give Hung a co-director’s credit, since he probably does just as much work directing the thing as credited director Wilson Yip. Starring Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Darren Shahlavi, Siu-Wong Fan, Lynn Hung, Ka Tung Lam, Xiaoming Huang, Kent Cheng, Yu-Hang To , Amber Chia, Stefan Morawietz, and directed by Wilson Yip. Future X-Cops is the new film directed by Wong Jing and starring Andy Lau. For those fans of Hong Kong cinema you will probably already be familiar with Andy Lau and Wong Jing but for those that are not I can recommend God of Gamblers (Wong Jing) and Infernal Affairs (starring Andy Lau and Tony Leung) as good places to start if you are interested.
Wong Jing is a prolific director and one whose films are often ridiculous and slightly demented but also very enjoyable (the God of Gambler films were some of my favourite films as a teenager) and this year sees the release of his new science fiction film, Future X-Cops. Reportedly costing $20 million the film looks pretty insane, with ludicrous special effects and very cheesy action sequences. This will certainly not be a cinematic masterpiece but I’m a sucker for this kind of light hearted cheesy...
