“Survivor” is a game that ends with one person claiming the life-changing $1 million prize, but sometimes the winner is not the one people expect. The title of Sole Survivor is the result of taking out the biggest competitors, being likable in the cast, and appealing to the jury, all while arguing the case of why you’re the most deserving of the win. While many of the champions are well-deserved, at least according to the passionate fans at home, others spark massive debate when Jeff Probst reads their names out loud. Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) where we detail the Top 10 biggest “Survivor” upset winners of all time.

Back when “Survivor” was watched by almost 50 million people, Colby Donaldson was the young, fit, charming cowboy who the public wanted to prevail — and he almost did, making it to the Final Two.

Over 600 people have competed on Survivor since the first season aired in 2000. Some have been more memorable than others, and there’s no doubt that one of the CBS reality show’s first stars was Colby Donaldson. But even though Colby helped Survivor reel in plenty of viewers with his good looks and Southern charm, the contestant also cost the show $100,000.

Survivor fans first met Colby Donaldson as a contestant on Survivor: The Australian Outback, the show’s second season. It premiered on Jan. 28, 2001, following the Super Bowl, and fans were immediately drawn to Colby. He was his tribe’s leader and a good ole Southern boy (even his luxury item was the Texas flag).

“Survivor” Season 39 doesn’t debut until the fall, but that’s not stopping fans from getting excited about a potential all-winners edition for Season 40. In our recent poll that asked viewers to vote for their favorite Female winner of all time, these five earned the highest support: Parvati Shallow (“Fans vs. Favorites”) at 29%, Sandra Diaz-Twine (“Pearl Islands” and “Heroes vs. Villains”) at 17%, Tina Wesson (“The Australian Outback”) at 9%, Jenna Morasca (“The Amazon”) at 7% and Natalie Anderson (“San Juan del Sur”) at 7%. Do you agree or disagree with our readers’ poll results? Sound off down in the comments section.

Pre-credit sequence. Nobody went home last week because Julie quit. I repressed that. Maybe that's why we're starting with a montage of moving skies, since there was no trip to Tribal to return from. At Huyopa, Missy is pissed off at Julie, though she thinks she's mad at Julie because the quitting delayed voting Josh out. We all know that's not true, though. Jon is worried that they may be being deceitful, sharing his worries with Jaclyn. They're both feeling smug about everybody needing to want to work with them. That's not the same as wanting to need to work with them. They've decided to take out Jeremy, the leader of one pack, even if it means following a different leader in Josh. "My best path right now does not include Jeremy," Jon repeats. Temple of Dumb. Reward time. Two teams will load puzzle pieces onto a cart and then...

Because of travel last week, I didn't get to do my "Survivor" recap until Friday and I didn't get to do my "Survivor" exit interview until Tuesday and I'm only posting it tonight, which probably means that I already need to remind people who Dale Wentworth even was. It's not that Dale didn't do interesting things. Kelley's father started fire with his glasses, orchestrated Nadiya's elimination by referencing "Amazing Race" precedent, bickered with Missy about rice and made a semi-valiant attempt to save his hide with the use of a Fake Immunity Idol. It's just that when "Survivor" moves on, it's sometimes hard to remember the people left behind. Fans are already on to being up-in-arms about this week's departed castaway and that unapologetic exit interview will be posting tomorrow. In my conversation with Dale we chatted about his difficulties swaying his tribe to focus on somebody else instead of him,...

Is Julie's quit even worse than Na Onka's?
In Survivor: Nicaragua, Na Onka Mixon set a new benchmark for bad Survivor behavior. She stole food, talked trash and quit the game with a clear path to the finals.
But at least in Nicaragua, the weather was terrible. Most quitters leave the game after being buffeted by the elements.

Pre-credit sequence. Dale was the latest victim of Coyopa's ineptitude, Keith was confused to see his name written down at all. Apparently nothing notable happened on the nighttime return to camp, but the next morning Missy feels it's her responsibility to explain why things happened the way they happened. "You could've let me know," Keith pouts, asking what would have happened if Dale had voted for him. [Dale and I discussed that in his yet-to-post exit interview.] Although he's reassured that Dale was going home no matter what, Keith is merely making nice, telling us he'd be prepared to leave his current alliance high-and-dry. Clearly they remember, picking on the boy. Dale may get his chance soon, because Tree-Mail tells Hunahpu to pack their belongings. A Merge is coming and Josh laments that his tribe didn't take advantage of the opportunity to vote Jeremy out when they had they chance. For his part, Jeremy is relieved to get away from...

[Apologies for the late "Survivor" recap. I've done timely recaps from several far-flung parts of the world in the past, even with strange time zones in play. This week's complication was a near-complete lack of Internet access. But here's my recap anyway... Just for the completists!] Pre-credit sequence. When we left things, Coyopa had just voted out Kelley for reasons only understood, and maybe not even then, by Mr. & Miss America Jon & Jaclyn. "Tribal was about as bad as it gets," says Dale, voice cracking, as he colorfully refers to complete strangers slaughtering his daughter. I like the rhyme, even if the sentiment confuses me. "It was the roughest thing I've ever watched my daughter go through," Dale says, vowing not to quit until he can't talk anymore. The next morning, Dale is still insecure, suspecting he's next, vowing to do something drastic. That thing is showing Jon his fake Idol, hoping it will...

It was bad enough that Missy, John, and Keith ate all the rice at their previous tribe. But then they came over to Coyopa and started also helping themselves to that supply, well, Dale Wentworth was none too happy about that, so what did they do? They voted both him and his daughter out of the game! Dale called into Entertainment Weekly Radio (SiriusXM, channel 105) to discuss where it all went wrong, whether he thought his fake idol play would work, and how he feels about daughter Kelley last week saying she wishes she hadn’t played alongside him. It never fails that I get an early "Survivor" exit interview that makes me lament that fate or one wrong move cost us a potentially interesting castaway. Kelley Wentworth didn't make much of an impact in the season's first three "Survivor: San Juan Del Sur" episodes, which made it surprising that Drew felt her to be a big enough threat that he threw an Immunity Challenge in an ill-fated attempt to vote Kelley out. That flawed gambit blew up in Drew's face and in our conversation, he said Kelley had "something evil" about her, but because it was an email interview, I couldn't follow-up. Kelley didn't show that "something evil" in this past week's episode, but she still found herself a slightly confusing target when Jon & Jaclyn decided to align with Baylor & Missy instead of Kelley and her father Dale. Between her endearing tendency to start answers with "Gosh,...

I missed the monkey in Friday (October 24) night's episode of "The Amazing Race." Before the episode, Phil Keoghan tweeted a picture with a money, so I was excited for a monkey, but rather than being a heavily featured monkey, there was apparently just a single monkey on a leash and I missed him. I caught the monkey in the odd Prego commercial that aired after the episode, but I sat in disappointment not noticing the Moroccan monkey who apparently appeared. Sigh. So Friday night was one big disappointment for me. That's not entirely the fault of the "Amazing Race" episode, mind you. There was a good Detour and a nicely chaotic Roadblock, but is anybody else feeling like this season is slowly devolving into a mixture of unlikable teams and boring teams? I like Bethany & Adam and I think I can root for them until they do something to piss me off.

In his online "Survivor: San Juan Del Sur" bio, Drew Christy says of his Personal Claim To Fame: " I seem to pull off the unthinkable with ease. People will ask me... How did you do that?" On Wednesday night's "Survivor," Drew absolutely pulled off the unthinkable. In 44 minutes of television, Drew went from a position of power in a tribe that couldn't lose, a tribe on which the women were on a minority and couldn't create any sort of meaningful alliance to having his torch snuffed. Along the way, he decided to throw a challenge, but didn't tell anybody, led a campaign to vote out Kelley, but couldn't get a single person to join him, and managed to mobilize the tribe's women so that, amidst the chaos Drew created, they were able to vote him out in an impressive blindside. There's the usual litany of things we/I always tell "Amazing Race" contestants to do: Learn to drive stick. Make sure you can swim. Read the freaking clue. Etc. Mike's piece of advice is a good one and one that should be added to the permanent list. But maybe it should be amended somewhat. Yes, bad directions are worse than no directions, but a better phrasing might be: If you ask stupid people for directions you'll get bad directions. Because Friday's "Amazing Race" Leg didn't really come down to "bad directions" at all. The eliminated team got perfectly acceptable directions that just happened to lead them to a ridiculous place that had no connection to the desired destination. Oh well. More from Friday's Leg,...

John Rocker figures that by giving Val insider information, he did everything he could. Josh, by the way, admits that he was the person who flipped his vote in the first round. Josh suspects Val and John Rocker of having colluded -- which they did -- though he isn't ready to bail on the All-Guy Alliance, putting Jaclyn and then Baylor in jeopardy. Drew Roker or Drew Van Winkle. Over at Hunahpu, their shelter doesn't have a real roof, which concerns Drew, who warns his colleagues about the potential for a tropical storm.

I've been too generous to Coyopa. That's been the takeaway from my first two "Survivor: San Juan Del Sur" exit interview of the season. I've been paying too much attention to a couple very close performances in challenges and not nearly enough attention to the sheer number of challenge losses accrued by a tribe that is only a few weeks from the sort of Pagonging that could throw this season's Blood vs. Water twist out of whack. Val Collins, the season's second booted castaway, doesn't suffer fools and, in the case of this interview, I got to be the fool in asking why things have been so tough for Coyopa when it didn't seem like it should be that bad a tribe. "What? You don't think it looked like a bad tribe? Are you kidding me?" Val asked me, incredulous. "This couldn’t have been the worst tribe." She makes...

[This recap of Friday (October 3) night's "The Amazing Race" may be a bit rushed. I've got some Yom Kippur atoning to do. But I still want to do some honor to a decent enough Leg.] As you may have heard from a unshaven, drunk, pot-belled WWII era manager, there is no crying in baseball. Nobody has ever made the same claim about "The Amazing Race." In actuality, there's a lot of crying on "The Amazing Race." And I'm not entirely without understanding. Let's say you're an "Amazing Race" superfan and you've actually taken the time to study Race strategy and accumulate some of the skills that normally pay dividends and then you find yourself actually on "The Amazing Race" and in only your second Leg, you find yourself falling victim to a semi-unavoidable combination of current and lack of upper-body strength? I guess I can allow for some sniffling, especially if your commitment to remaining in...

Every week, host Jeff Probst will answer a few questions about the latest episode of 'Survivor: San Juan del Sur — Blood vs. Water.' Entertainment Weekly: Okay, Monty Hall, let’s talk about the Let’s Make a Deal crossover episode we just witnessed. Looks like Reed and Hunahpu tried to get you to play the part of sucker in their proposed trade of half a bag of rice for another flint. Two part question: Part 1: Even if they had come in at the top of the challenge and pleaded their case, was there any chance you...

Pre-credit sequence. I really want an explanation for Josh and Baylor's Tribal Council votes. Will we get one as we return to Coyopa? Yup! Kinda! "There's a method to my madness. I put your name down," Josh tells Baylor, claiming his goal was "to further advance their alliance." He begs her not to be mad. "That was a smart move in a way, but it was also sketchy and scary that he didn't tell me before," Baylor says. Yeah. I still don't get what anybody was thinking. Out like Flint. Hunahpu. That's the name of the other tribe? If you say so. Reed is showing off his bendiness. Jon is lifting logs and boasting about his partial arts prowess. Drew is doing push-ups. Natalie is not impressed by the shows of masculinity. But amidst the challenge prep, everybody has a new confusion: Where's their flint? "Losing that is not good,...

It's going to take a while before this feels normal, isn't it? Friday (September 28) marked a new time period premiere for "The Amazing Race," which kicked off its 25th installment far from the Sunday 8 p.m. home in which viewers have become accustomed to football/golf/basketball delays throughout the year. That means that instead of having Sunday come to an abrupt end in the late afternoon as I wait for "The Amazing Race" to start, a normal Friday workday just never ends. So... Yay! Friday's "Amazing Race" premiere had the disadvantage of following a very good "Survivor" launch on Wednesday. I say it every year, but there's just not enough time in a single hour to properly introduce a full assortment of reality show contestants and also deliver satisfactory and fun challenges. So Wednesday's "Survivor" got to be 90 minutes and, perhaps as a result, I finished the premiere with...

Every week, host Jeff Probst will answer a few questions about the latest episode of ‘Survivor: San Juan del Sur — Blood vs. Water.’ This week also features an added bonus: an exclusive video of Jeff Probst just minutes after the first Tribal Council giving his take on what went down.
Entertainment Weekly: Okay, here we go again Jeff, and let’s start off this season’s Q&A series with the start of the first episode. Obviously you are looking for some emotion at the beginning there as you force two loved ones to face-off, and you got all of it and then some.

Arrivals. Welcome to the start of "Survivor: Seriously Anybody Other Than John Rocker" or, as CBS seems to want to call it, "Survivor: San Juan Del Sur," or "Survivor: Blood vs Water - Newbies Edition." As usual, Jeff Probst arrives via helicopter, scaring the nine pairs of loved ones down on the beaches. Once again, each pair is in isolation, where they've been given flint and told to prepare and enjoy a night together. Jaclyn is Ms Michigan, while Jon played football at Michigan State, but they don't want to be viewed as threatening. And speaking of "threatening," Veteran media-blamer (and current member of the media) John Rocker blames the media for labeling him a bigot, while Julie doesn't want to be judged for her boobs. [Oh yeah! We've got monkeys!] Missy and Baylor are the first to experience my new favorite simian characters. Missy is frequently divorced and Baylor stands behind her, especially...

Tonight's premiere episode, kicked off with the usual introductions of the Blood vs Water castmembers. Once again, the family members or loved ones were split up into separate tribes. Then they got right to the first Rewards challenge. Husband and wife team ,Jeremy and Val Collins, were selected to to battle each other in the Rewards challenge for their separate tribes. The loser of the challenge got sent to exile Island until the immunity challenge. Jeremy ended up winning it and had to choose one person from his tribe to join Val at Exile Island. He sent Keith to join her, claiming it was because he felt he could best take care of her on the island. Jeremy won flint and a bag of beans for his tribe as the reward. The two tribe names were revealed to be Coyopa and Hunahpu. After a break, they showed conversation footage. Everyone...

Season 29 of Survivor kicked off this evening, and due to the last minute cancellation of the Redemption Island twist, we already have our first eliminated contestant. Who was it? If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
Surprise! On Tuesday night, Jimmy Fallon brought Britney Spears out to read off a list of the pros and cons of dating her. She's recently single -- and apparently "The Tonight Show" audience was filled with people who are already in love with her since they stood and cheered when she showed up. (Jimmy had to remind them it's *his* show.) Jimmy said they created a profile for Britney on Tinder (bio: "This better work, b-tch.") and Britney acted shocked and not too thrilled. Stay to the end to hear her "It's Britney, b-tch" line. Keith Richards was also on "The Tonight Show" and you know the man has stories.

John Rocker, the controversial former pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, will be competing in the upcoming season of Survivor alongside girlfriend Julie McGee.
John Rocker To Compete On Survivor
Survivor: San Juan del Sur – Blood vs. Water will welcome 18 contestants competing as pairs. Rocker, who pitched in the 1999 World Series against the Yankees, might have an awkward run on Survivor. He may be known for playing in the Major Leagues, but Rocker is also famous for an interview he gave in 1999, in which he repeatedly called gay people “f----ts” and made racist comments, among other unsavory remarks.
“I would retire first [before playing for a New York team]. It’s the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you’re [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth...

Confirming what we pretty much already knew, Fox announced on Monday afternoon that Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. will return as "American Idol" judges for next spring's 14th installment. The network also cleared up the general lack of suspense surrounding Ryan Seacrest and his return. Short version? Yes. Ryan Seacrest will maintain his place as "American Idol" Designated Continuity. Without Kevin Reilly or anybody currently filling Kevin Reilly's position, Fox had to mix things up with its network statements. "Jennifer, Keith, Harry and Ryan are the very best in the business at what they do, and I’m thrilled that they are returning to 'American Idol' for another season. Each brings unique qualities and expertise to the team, but they all share the same passion for helping undiscovered singers achieve the American dream," blurbs David Hill, Senior Executive Vice President, 21st Century Fox. All...
