One of The Onion’s classic headlines reads: “Marilyn Manson Now Going Door-To-Door Trying To Shock People.” The satirical article, published in 2001, was a devastating blow to a musician whose career consisted of dressing like a lunatic and screaming profane lyrics. Once you shine a light on it, the shtick becomes embarrassing quickly.
That headline came to mind when reading a tweet Ricky Gervais posted in the days before the release of his new Netflix special, “Armageddon”: “In this show, I talk about sex, death, pedophilia, race, religion, disability, free speech, global warming, the holocaust and Elton John. If you don’t approve of jokes about any of these things, then please don’t watch. You won’t enjoy it and you’ll get upset.”

Video Version of this Article Photo/Video: Ricky Gervais/Hollywood Insider YouTube Channel Ricky Gervais is an incredibly talented artist who’s had a far-reaching global influence on comedy and television. Mr. Gervais is not only a household name, but so many of the shows he created are as well. From ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras’ to ‘After Life’, Gervais has been a multi-decade, iconic success who has only improved with age. His art pushes boundaries in several ways, possibly stemming from his having grown up through the culturally revolutionary 60s and 70s. Born in Reading, Berkshire, England in 1961, Gervais’s parents were not in the entertainment business, but rather, his father was a hod carrier and laborer, putting him in a social and intellectual position to see the world from an everyday person’s point of view. From enduring a desk job that eventually inspired The Office to hosting the Golden Globes four times, Ricky Gervais has had his girlfriend Jane Fallon at his side throughout his entire journey.
The couple of 35 years even survived living in cramped quarters in London following college graduation.
“Our first flat was a one room in a place called Kings Cross, which was a really rough area,” Gervais, 56, tells People’s Editor-in-Chief Jess Cagle in the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview (streaming now on People TV). “I think it was above some sort of seedy sauna . . . That’s all we could afford.

The award-winning comic on hurting people's feelings, never reading books, and why Derek makes him well up
Derek, your comedy drama set in an old people's home, has returned for a full series. You've said before that you love Derek "more than any other character" you've created. Why?
I don't just mean I love the character like I'd love playing James Bond. I mean that if Derek was real, I would love him as a person. He gets to me. I could well up thinking about how sweet he is. He's us before we get burdened by what other people think of us. He doesn't have to second guess what the right thing is: he does it intuitively. He has no burden of duty other than asking: "What can I do that will make this person feel better?"
So it's not a traditional sitcom then…
I've left behind the veil of irony.

Ricky Gervais claimed he was just doing the job he was hired for at the Golden Globes. The 49-year-old comedian caused controversy when he hosted the awards ceremony on Sunday night, January 16 by ridiculing several top Hollywood stars, but the British star insists the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which branded his remarks "unacceptable", should not have been surprised by his behavior.

Ricky Gervais, Jane Fallon (Photo: © HFPA) Ricky Gervais' roasting, ahem, hosting job at the 2011 Golden Globes ceremony was panned by some television critics and most of the winners were quite predictable (The Social Network, Colin Firth, Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, etc.). However, jokes about gay Scientologists, Mel Gibson's reported anti-semitism, oral sex with Hugh Hefner (is that what that was?), Charlie Sheen's antics with a porn star, Robert Downey Jr's former drug addiction, and even the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's alleged kickbacks lured 16.99m viewers in the United States, up 0.5% from last year when James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar took home the Best Picture – Drama Golden Globe and 16.98 viewers tuned in. Regarding Gervais' performance, Los Angeles Times TV critic Mary McNamara wrote: "This year, he was far better prepared [than last year], and one would imagine, much sweatier, as it quickly became clear that his material wasn't just [...]...

Once-chubby funnyman Ricky Gervais has dropped a segment of his stand-up comedy show poking fun at fat people after adopting a healthier lifestyle and shedding more than 20 pounds (nine kilograms). "The Office" creator is known for his heavier frame but he has recently cut down on his food intake and started exercising more regularly with his longtime girlfriend Jane Fallon - and now they're both lighter on their feet.
He tells People.com, "I lost 20 (or) 22 pounds (9.98 kilograms). It wasn't so much about the weight. It was more that I was a fat, lazy, out of shape slob, to be honest. I didn't eat differently. I probably just stopped having that second meal at 11.30 at night."
But Gervais, 49, admits there's one drawback to slimming down. He says, "Now I've got to stop making jokes about fat people, which is annoying. When I was fat, it was Ok."...

Ricky Gervais' family think he is a "little fat t**t". The British funny man, who has been with girlfriend Jane Fallon since 1982, insists his loved ones are not impressed by his success and refuse to treat him any differently.
"They don't think I'm a film star. They don't think I'm an actor. They don't think I'm anything," he said. "They just think I'm the little fat t**t that I always was."
Although the comic claims his family think he is fat, the former star of U.K.'s "The Office" recently embarked on a health kick and admits he made the choice to shift the flab because he was worried his weight would kill him.
Ricky, who has appeared in several Hollywood films, explained, "I don't want to blow it. I don't want to go, 'Oh f**k! You idiot. So now, everything's great. And you're going...

Ricky Gervais has described his recent experience with a pack of wolves as "almost spiritual". Animal-loving Ricky Gervais had a close encounter with a pack of wolves - and made friends with them.
The Office creator was given the chance to attend a "wolf walking" trip as a birthday gift from his partner Jane Fallon in June.
But when it came to interacting with the wild animals, Gervais admits he was "scared" - until one of the beasts rose on its hind legs and licked the funnyman's face.
Taking to his official blog, Gervais writes, "Jane got me a 'walking with wolves' day as part of my birthday present. It was amazing. Almost spiritual. It really affected me and I want to visit them again. I was quite scared at first as they are still wild and their bite is three times stronger than a pit bull. They are magnificent though. I highly recommend it.
"The alpha male came over to me at one point. I froze. He jumped up and put his paws on my shoulders, (yes, he was f**king huge), and started licking my mouth. 'Don't move,' they said. 'He likes you. He can smell what you had for lunch.'"...

Ricky Gervais's comedy empire now stretches across the globe, from Hollywood films to podcasts that reach millions. But along with the adoring fans have come a legion of critics. He discusses weight loss, being a control freak, and why he always has to have the last word
Ricky Gervais doesn't actually want to rule the world, or at least not all of it. He just wants absolute total control over his small corner of it. Although it's not that small. The Office is now a global phenomenon: it's been sold to more than 80 countries and, after an American, Brazilian, French, German and Russian version, it's about to be re-incarnated in Israel, complete with "an ultra-orthodox saleswoman", "an embittered Russian accountant" and, in the main role, a Jewish David Brent, otherwise known as Avi Meshulam.
Then there's his podcasts – basically the recorded ramblings of him and his long-time collaborator Stephen Merchant...

Ricky Gervais says achieving worldwide fame has made his relationship stronger. The funnyman became a huge star in 2001 at the age of 40 when he played the role of David Brent in U.K. TV show "The Office" and believes that because success came later in life, he and long-term partner Jane Fallon were able to cope with the extra pressure.
"It only affects you if you're an idiot. We'd already been together for so long. So it never threatened us. It was all good, and it's got better," he said. "I had a wider head on my shoulders. When 'The Office' went out, I said to Jane, 'Why didn't I do this earlier?' She said, 'Because you wouldn't have been any good.' And she was right."

Ricky Gervais won't tie the knot because he doesn't believe in God. The comedian - who lives with Jane Fallon, a producer and novelist - said they'd never gotten married because they weren't religious and had never felt the need to make it official after 25 years.
