The traditionally celebrity-heavy Toronto Film Festival has unveiled its list of Canada’s best indie films for 2023, which includes a host of first-time directors that have come to the fore as the Hollywood actors strike put local movies and talent front and center at TIFF last September.
Canadian filmmakers were able to grab the spotlight after SAG-AFTRA members barred from promoting studio or streamer projects allowed them to fill the vacuum on TIFF red carpets and at industry events.
New directors were also favorites of Toronto programmers as a shifting TIFF film market with few American celebrities in town also allowed the marquee festival to double down on finding new creative voices.
So here’s the top Canadian feature films of 2023, as decided by film pickers in Toronto.

AMC is heading into more Dark Winds.
The cable network has renewed the crime drama for a third season, coming a couple of weeks after season two finished its run.
The series is planned to premiere in early 2025, a noticeable shift from the summer premiere of its first two seasons, but understandable given the writers and actors strike.
It comes after Dark Winds made its debut on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max service as part of a two-month pop-up.
Dark Winds stars Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten.
The first season of the series, which is produced by AMC Studios, drew 2.2M viewers on AMC for its June 2022 launch in Live+3 ratings. The company said that the second season averaged 1.7M viewers each week in Live+3, per Nielsen and saw “significant” viewership and acquisition gains from season one on AMC+.

Perhaps it’s coincidence, or serendipity, but two of the best-reviewed shows on television happened to both return at the same time with new seasons last week — and both put Native storytelling and Indigenous characters front and center. FX’s “Reservation Dogs” and AMC’s “Dark Winds” have a few things in common — starting, of course, with Zahn McClarnon, who stars as Navajo tribal police officer Joe Leaphorn in “Dark Winds” and recurs as Officer Big in “Reservation Dogs.”
And both also share acclaim from viewers and critics: “Reservation Dogs” sports a 99% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ reviews aggregator, while “Dark Winds” boasts a remarkable 100% ranking. But the two shows come from very different genres: “Reservation Dogs” is a modern-day coming of age dramatic comedy about a group of friends working through the death of one of their own, while “Dark Winds” is a western noir period piece set in the 1970s.

When Chris Eyre’s “Smoke Signals” won the audience prize in Sundance 25 years ago, the director thought the kudos would soon lead to a landslide of opportunities for Native talent. Amid a flourishing independent film scene, the road trip dramedy won acclaim and awards as the first feature written, directed and produced by Native filmmakers. But it took two decades, and a pivot to television, for Native voices to finally get a wider chance to be heard.
More than two decades later, Eyre is now an executive producer and director on AMC+’s Navajo noir series “Dark Winds,” based on the Tony Hillerman mystery novels. Longtime Hillerman fans Robert Redford and George R.R. The warm reception that Dark Winds Season 1 received last summer from viewers and critics alike “was not necessarily a surprise to me, but I was very happy that people enjoyed watching the show,” McClarnon told TVLine during a late-June Zoom. “I mean, it’s difficult to put together a television show. Exclusive: Nicholas Logan and Jeri Ryan have joined the cast of Dark Winds, AMC’s Western noir thriller series based on Tony Hillerman’s popular Leaphorn & Chee book series. Logan joins as a Season 2 series regular and Ryan in a recurring role opposite Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon in the series from creator Graham Roland and executive producers George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford.
The castings reaffirm AMC’s commitment to Dark Winds, which has been a critical and commercial breakout, following a string of pickup reversal decisions by the network in the past few weeks done as a cost-cutting move.
Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (McClarnon) of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes.
Logan plays Colton Wolf, a twisted assassin with a secret that puts him on a collision course with Lt.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “HózhóoNaasháa,” the Season 1 finale of “Dark Winds,” streaming now on AMC+.
After a slow boil first season, “Dark Winds” ends with a bang — quite literally. The finale wraps up the case of the armored truck robbery that underlaid the six episode first season of AMC’s neo-noir series, which took its plot from Tony Hillerman’s 1978 novel “Listening Woman.” The episode ends with Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) in a tense stand-off in a cave where the two robbers were hiding their money and their hostages. And after plenty of twists and turns — including the revelation that Joe’s FBI ally Witover (Noah Emmerich) was actually allied with the robbers the entire time — the stand-off concludes with Jim and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) setting off explosives to bury the money and the bodies in the cave.

Robert Redford, an überfan of Tony Hillerman’s iconic crime novels featuring Navajo Tribal police officers Lt. Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, teams with fellow executive producer George R.R. Martin and a predominantly Native American writers’ room and cast for Dark Winds, his most ambitious Hillerman adaptation yet. (Credit: Michael Moriatis/Stalwart Productions/AMC) Based primarily on Listening Woman, the twisty psychological thriller opens in 1971 with two violent crimes: a bank heist in Gallup, New Mexico, and a double murder on the nearby reservation. Investigating both are seasoned Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and instinctual Sgt. Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten), joined by prickly Chee (Kiowa Gordon), a new recruit with a secret agenda. Expect condescension and interference from FBI supervisor Whitover (The Americans’ Noah Emmerich) as the cases inevitably intertwine. Though it appears “the bank robbery is a ‘white crime,’ and the other an ‘Indian crime,’” warns EP and director Chris Eyre,...

By the third episode of AMC’s Dark Winds, there are ongoing investigations into multiple murders on Navajo land, as well as a string of bank heists that may or may not relate to a group of radical Native American activists. Tribal police and the FBI are on the case, following leads both human and supernatural.
It’s here that Dark Winds pauses for an episode devoted primarily to a coming-of-age ritual for a young character who hasn’t been part of the story previously and won’t play any role in the story going forward.
The ceremony, kinaaldé, and the episode represent why Dark Winds is interesting and thoroughly worthwhile despite a first season in which the central mystery never comes together as anything close to compelling.

AMC’s new drama Dark Winds, based on Tony Hillerman’s bestselling series of buddy-cop mystery novels set on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico, is not the first television attempt at the property. Twenty years ago, PBS made a trio of TV-movies adapted from Hillerman’s books, starring Wes Studi as veteran detective Joe Leaphorn and Adam Beach as his young partner Jim Chee. While it was exciting to see an under-represented group at the center of a familiar genre, it was also a sign of Hollywood’s limited...

Early in the first episode of AMC’s new series “Dark Winds,” Zahn McClarnon’s Joe Leaphorn advises Kiowa Gordon’s Jim Chee about a way to get ahead when investigating crimes on a Navajo reservation. Leaphorn’s been doing this for a while, and isn’t impressed by his new deputy’s credentials, or his naked ambition; sometimes, pragmatic approaches are best, so Leaphorn advises Chee to keep a carton of cigarettes around. On the reservation, people will say more for a pack, he says, “than in an interrogation room.”
It’s a nicely chosen detail — one that speaks to its setting, its time period, and the dynamic between the pair. Leaphorn is the wellspring of knowledge about law enforcement among the Navajo. And Chee, possessed with more ambition than street smarts, and happily ensconced in white America prior to being called back home, needs help relating to the community.

After decades of waiting, developing, and deal-making, “Dark Winds” blew into Austin, TX Thursday night for its global premiere.
“This is such a special show for us. ‘Dark Winds’ has had a long journey to this moment,” Dan McDermott, president of AMC Entertainment and AMC Studios, said from the stage at the Paramount Theater. “It started over 30 years ago, when Bob Redford discovered Tony Hillerman’s novels and optioned them. He spent a long time trying to get this show made — and he heard ‘no’ a lot.”
Heralded as the most ambitious Native-led TV show ever made, “Dark Winds” is a thriller based on Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee book series. Zahn McClarnon stars as Tribal Police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, a married investigator working on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley. When two high-profile cases cross his desk, Leaphorn is assigned a new deputy: Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon...

AMC released the trailer for its upcoming original series, “Dark Winds.” Based on the “Leaphorn & Chee” books by Tony Hillerman, the noir thriller premieres June 12 on AMC and AMC+ with its first two episodes and a new episode each Sunday thereafter.
“Dark Winds” takes place in 1971, on a secluded outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Ariz. The series follows Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) as he is overcome by a string of what seem to be completely unrelated crimes. But, as he gets closer to the truth, the more he is visited by the wounds of his past. His new deputy, Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), joins him on the journey, and he, too, has scores to settle from his years on the reservation as a young man. The two men join forces in the battle against evil, themselves and their demons as they travel the path to salvation.

Scott Cooper’s horror thriller “Antlers” is finally ready to trot.
The Searchlight Pictures release, delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, will bow as the closing night film of the annual Beyond Fest. After, it will continue rolling out at global genre festivals, including Fantastic Fest, the Telluride Horror Show and Sitges Film Festival.
The tour will conclude with a domestic theatrical release on Oct. 29.
“I made ‘Antlers’ as a communal theatrical experience for cinema lovers,” said director and co-writer Cooper. “I can’t think of a more apt series of screenings to launch our film before audiences across the globe — audiences whom I hope share an appreciation for horror films with a different perspective on our everyday fears and ancestral mythology.”
Cooper, whose credits include “Hostiles” and “Crazy Heart,” helms the pic, produced by Guillermo del Toro, David S. Goyer (“The Night House”) and J. Miles Dale of the upcoming “Nightmare Alley.
