Chinese television production company Linmon Pictures is deepening its ties with the Thai entertainment industry, announcing two upcoming projects: “Under the Skin,” a Thai remake of popular Chinese series, alongside “The Fairest Lady,” marking Linmon’s debut Thai production. The projects were announced at a panel discussion on March 12 at Hong Kong’s FilMart.
During last year’s FilMart, Linmon Pictures revealed its initiative to adapt its successful female-led contemporary drama “Nothing but Thirty” in Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong, having previously licensed the remake rights to Korean pay TV network Jtbc.
Zhou Yuan, co-founder and executive vice president of Linmon Pictures, highlighted the company’s strategic decision to prioritize the region as their initial target market for international expansion, citing two key factors: the abundance of top-tier talent in the area and Thailand’s growing significance in the global media landscape. Set in the early 2000s, Panu Aree and Kong Rithdee's “The Cursed Land” distills Thailand's political and ethnic tensions into a thrilling, time-hopping horror film. In locating their film within the vernacular beliefs of a Muslim community, the two directors expand the horizons of Thai horror cinema, traditionally rooted in Buddhist cosmology to instead capture Thailand's historical specters up in a bottle while also indulging in all the conventional pleasures and horrors of the haunted house genre effort which is now screening at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Amazon launched localized versions of its Prime Video service on Monday in key Southeast Asian markets — Indonesia, Thailand and The Philippines. The tech giant boosted its subscriber push in the three markets by simultaneously unveiling slates of localized originals for each territory, as well as discounted introductory Amazon Prime membership offerings.
Amazon Prime Video launched in Southeast Asia in 2016, but the versions of the service available in the region have never featured the local-language interfaces, subtitling and original content offerings that are common in more developed markets.
That changes Monday in Southeast Asia’s three biggest markets, where Amazon Prime is relaunching with seven-day free trials, followed by special discounts that will last until the end of the year — 59,000 Indonesian rupiah (3.98), 149 Thai baht (4.10) and 149 Philippine pesos (2.69).

If one traces back a country’s history, to that point when suddenly its economic and social landscape changed quite dramatically, in the case of Thailand this moment has to be the year 1997. Many Asian cultures were hit by the economic crash which caused millions to go bankrupt, businesses to fail and laid the groundwork for the disintegration of many families, which is one of the reasons Thai director Lee Chatametikool picked this year as the setting for his 2013 directorial debut “Concrete Clouds”. In an interview with easternkicks he explains how that point in the 1990s marked a transitional period for his home country, as it transitioned “into a more consumer and capitalist culture”. His effort was met with quite a lot of international praise from critics and audiences alike, culminating in three National Film Association Awards in his home country for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress.

Top Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun and Korean director-turned-producer Na Hong-jin (“The Chaser”) have teamed to create new Thai horror film “The Medium.”
Now in post-production, “The Medium” is a horrifying story of a shaman’s inheritance in the Isan region of Thailand. But the goddess that appears to have taken possession of a family member turns out not be as benevolent as it first appears.
The film (aka “Rang-Zong”) was developed by Na with the backing of Korean studio Showbox. Local production is by Thailand’s Gdh 559. Co-production is by Na’s company Northern Cross, with the film marking Na’s debut as a producer.
International rights are being handled by independent sales firm Finecut, which will launch the film at Berlin’s European Film Market. Finecut previously handled two of Na’s earlier films “The Chaser” and “The Wailing,” both of which premiered in the Cannes festival’s official selection.

“Shutter,” the commercially successful Thai horror film that has spawned three remakes, among which an American one that received mostly negative reviews but was a huge box office success, has divided critics since it was first screened at the Bangkok International Film Festival. However, audiences around the world seem to love it and it has been heralded by many as one of the greatest Asian horror films of the 21st century. I personally believe that “Shutter” offers a few elements to be considered a cut above the rest, but ultimately fails to overcome its overabundance of clichés and lack of compelling scares.

Part of the official selection for Toronto International Film Festival, Taiwan Golden Horse Film Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival, Rooth Tang’s first feature length film ‘Sway’ is an intelligent look at how globalisation has made the world so small, yet it can still feel so vast.
“Sway” will be available to iTunes, Google Play, Amazon on 9/1/2018, courtesy of Cheng Cheng Films
The film begins in an airport, which is really the precursor to the inter continental journey we will embark on throughout the 108 minute runtime. We follow three different couples living very different lives on three different continents. Parisian immigrant Arthur’s visa is due to expire so he is trying to convince his career-focused partner Vivian to come back to Asia with him. American Amanda is dealing with the difficulties of marrying into a Japanese family to a widower, who is still carrying his demons with him.

The jump scare is a uniquely horror movie convention. Where some movies use it as an excuse to play peekaboo and assault you with noise, others use it as a way to shatter your complacency as a viewer. It’s the purest form of scare: something bursts out of a dark corner, a loud noise cuts the tension, or a jolt to the plot comes on so unexpected, you don’t know what hit you. It may just be a momentary fright, but a good horror movie will put you on edge and keep you there.

An accomplished directorial debut features two brothers reconnecting in Bangkok following their father’s suicide
Set in Bangkok circa 1997, this moody drama about two brothers trying to cope with their father’s suicide subtly queries the impact of macroeconomics on personal lives.
Elder brother Mutt (soulful Ananda Everingham), who’s been living in New York as a currency trader, shoulders guilt for his own small contribution to his country’s – and consequently his father’s – meltdown, and tries to recover some lost innocence by reconnecting with his ex-girlfriend Sai (Janesuda Parnto), who also has money troubles.

The Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) has announced six Thai works from rising filmmakers for this year’s Project Spotlight in the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (Naff).
PiFan’s Project Spotlight takes a different Asian country each year to focus on selected genre film projects.
The seventh edition of Naff lauds Thailand as recently “running strong with its genre films of unique subject matters and techniques” and the filmmakers for the six selected projects as up-and-coming on the international stage.
Off his recent film Hong Hun featuring Ananda Everingham, Kulp Kaljareuk will bring mystery thriller Fallen Thailand as his next feature, with Nattaporn Kaljareuk producing. With shades of political commentary, the story is set in 2035 and features a Thai boxer battling zombies in a quarantined hospital to save his wife, a nurse, and help a lost child find his mother.

Gangs Of Wasseypur Part 2 | Stoker | Arbitrage | Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters | Caesar Must Die | The Bay | Sleep Tight | Broken City | Trashed | Safe Haven | Hi-So | Michael H. Profession: Director | The Gospel According To Matthew | The Attacks Of 26/11 | Acoustic Routes
Gangs Of Wasseypur Part 2 (18)
(Anurag Kashyap, 2012, Ind) Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Zeishan Quadri, Aditya Kumar, Huma Qureshi. 160 mins
It's over five hours long in all, but there's barely a slack moment in this exhilarating Indian epic as it races through generations of smalltown criminal, industrial and political enmity. Yes, it's violent, but like all great crime stories it's also a vibrant tapestry of family life and modern history, closer to Leone, Coppola or Tarantino than Bollywood.
Stoker (18)
(Park Chan-wook, 2013, Us/UK) Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode. 99 mins
The Oldboy director gives us a sensual, tantalisingly ambiguous thriller, centred on Wasikowska and her shifty smalltown family.
Arbitrage (15)
(Nicholas Jarecki, 2012, Us) Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Brit Marling.

The talented Aditya Assarat shows his connection to the rhythms of life in this plotless piece about a drifting actor
Aditya Assarat is the Thai writer-director who caught eyes back in 2007 with his quietly stirring debut, Wonderful Town, about an architect dispatched to a region flattened by the Asian tsunami. His third feature – its title is short for "high society" – returns to similar terrain, watching discreetly as a drifting actor (Ananda Everingham) splits with his model girlfriend (Cerise Leang) while filming in a desolated coastal resort. Assarat shares Apichatpong Weerasethakul's ability to conjure delicate moods and memories, but his interests reside in the concrete, rather than spiritual: the semi-demolished apartment block the actor retreats to becomes a particular source of fascination. It's almost gallery-like in its resistance to urgent narrative drives – anyone who finds Sofia Coppola movies wispy should stay clear. Yet if life, as they say, moves on,...

★★★☆☆ Thai director Aditya Assarat's debut film, Wonderful Town (2007), saw a quiet romance set amidst a community mourning in the wake of the 2004 tsunami. Whilst his sophomore feature does shift away from it slightly, Hi-So (2010) - and its first half in particular - is still haunted by the spectre of that devastating natural disaster. Meditatively taking in both an eerily desolate seafront and similarly deserted husk in Bangkok, it is perhaps through the settings that Assarat tries to convey his thoughts on the high society (hi-so) types of the title. The action opens in a derelict coastal hotel where American educated actor, Ananda (Ananda Everingham), is hooting a film.

Thai star Ananda Everingham has charted an interesting path for himself. At some point following his breakthrough as the lead in the original version of horror picture Shutter, Everingham literally drafted a list of the most interesting directors in Thailand at the time. Then he worked his way down the list, making movies with each of them. Commercial cinema out of the way, Everingham moved on to the indies - both as an actor and producer. And having knocked that off the list he is now blazing a course through the emerging cinemas of South East Asia as a whole. He's made a movie in Laos - where pretty much nobody has made a movie - and is now moving on to The Philippines...

Director/writer: Ekachai Uekrongtham.
Cast: Ananda Everingham, Florence Faivre and Andrew Lin.
*A screener of this film was provided by Gravitas Ventures.
Sensory deprivation can cause strange events to happen. When the participant is willing to be placed in a coffin, and let the lid be hammered shut, one song comes to mind, “Welcome to my Nightmare.” No, Alice Cooper isn't going to sing in the dark. Instead, what those people will hear is the chanting of psalms. The Thai ritual of purification is now set to begin.
Simply titled Coffin, this film exposes the life and times of Chris (Ananda Everingham) and Su (Karen Mok). These two individuals undergo this renewal process which begins with them learning this bizarre true-to-life event, the Non Loeng Sadorcro ceremony. And when they arrive at the Wat Prommanee temple in Nakhon Nayok, about 100km northeast of Bangkok, to participate in this ritual, that’s when the fun begins.

Director: Ekachai Uekrongtham. Review: Adam Wing. Legend has it that in Thailand you can spend the night in a specially designed coffin and cheat death, many people have claimed that such an event has changed their lives for the better. To prolong his girlfriend's life, architect Chris (Ananda Everingham) overcomes his claustrophobia and participates in the real life mass coffin ritual. Diagnosed with terminal cancer one week before her wedding, Hong Kong nutritionist Sue (Karen Mok) abandons her life in the hope of cheating death as well. As is usually the case in this kind of thing, events don’t quite go according to plan (there’ll be no hugs and puppies on this one) and it’s not long before consequences far worse than death come a knocking. Come a crawling. Come a creeping… you get the idea. The fifth instalment of the Final Destination series is fooling around...

A lot more slicker than it's predecessor it's arrival, courtesy of Sahamongkol Films, is neatly in time for it's imminent late January release into Thailand theatres. With the overwhelming success of the Phobia movies the anthology project has become rather the flavor of the day in Thailand. There have been more horror oriented compilations, of course, but also romances and others.
And next to adopt the format is หลุด 4 หลุด. If there's an English title for this one I haven't been able to find it but it's a four part project that looks to focus on horror with some action and comedy thrown in. Sahamongkol Film and Prachya Pinkaew's Baa Ram Ewe are the backers and, yep, that's Ananda Everingham (Shutter, The Red Eagle) starring in the more action oriented segment.
Though details are scarce for the time being the trailer is looking good and you can take a look below.

As anybody who is a regular reader of this site can tell you there are a handful of actors around the world whose careers I follow with particular intensity. It's not just because they're talented, though they certainly are. It's because they also have a nose for talent and a remarkable ability to attach themselves to strong scripts and strong directors as well. Ananda Everingham is one of these guys. Tadanobu Asano was for years, though he's slowed now. Nikolaj Lie Kaas is another. And in Norway, there's Aksel Hennie.
Hennie first came to my attention as the writer-director-star of gritty drama Uno, after which I found him in Hawaii, Oslo and was pretty much hooked. Hennie's a picky one, very selective with his projects, and I would imagine that would be even more the case than normal after the massive international success of Max Manus, in which he played the lead.

Yesterday marked the Gala Premiere of Wisit Sasanatieng's Red Eagle in Bangkok's Central World, and I suppose given the writer-director's past films that I've enjoyed, I made it a point to travel to Bangkok to catch this, and the kind folks at Five Star Production provided me an opportunity to attend the gala. I've also managed to get a quick interview session with Ananda Everingham, who plays Rom Ritthikrai aka Red Eagle in this reboot of the 60s film franchise which starred the legendary Thai actor Mitr Chaibancha, just before the festivities for the gala began.

I don't often dedicate posts to poster art but anything involving Thai director Wisit Sasanatieng (Tears of the Black Tiger, Citizen Dog) is a special case, particularly when the film in question is his long awaited revival of classic Thai superhero The Red Eagle.
The first poster for the film - one that was simply the hero's mask on a black background - appeared along with the first trailer and now there's a new one sheet and while I doubt that this will be the final effort it does offer a good look at that mask in use.
Filming on this was delayed significantly due to a serious motorcycle accident suffered by star Ananda Everingham but rather than recast to keep things on schedule the producers and director opted to wait out Everingham's recovery and rehabilitation period to get the Eagle they wanted. And I'm pleased they did.

It's been a long time coming but Wisit Sasanatieng's masked superhero film The Red Eagle is almost upon us. It was years ago now that the director of Tears of the Black Tiger and Citizen Dog announced his plan to resurrect the classic superhero, originally played in a series of films in the 1960s by mega-star Mitr Chaibancha, the original star dying in a stunt gone wrong on the set of his final Red Eagle film.
And, for a while, it appeared as though this new picture may have carried over the luck of Chaibancha's final effort, with filming delayed when new star Ananda Everingham (Shutter) involved in a serious motorcycle accident just weeks before filming was due to start.
A nuclear power plant is about to be commissioned upon the signing of corrupt and power hungry politicians. The citizens are in frenzy, as they oppose this plan but...
