On being informed of her husband's death, she felt obliged to go on with the evening performance for lack of an understudy.
At one time held the record for the longest run on Broadway (480 performances).
Her father John Ellsler, was a prominent stage actor and manager. Her mother, the former Euphemia Murray, had played Portia to Edwin Booth's Shylock.
Acted in Shakespearean roles in her father's company from the age of sixteen.
On Broadway from 1901.
