There’s a common internet meme which states that you should always be yourself unless you can be Batman, in which case always be Batman. This seems to be true of comics, as well: a comic should always focus on its own cast of characters… unless you can get Batman to appear, in which case focus on Batman.
That applies to Green Lanterns #16 anyway, as the usual space-cop duo dynamic is shaken up when Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz travel to Gotham City to help Batman with a bizarre case. A string of homicides have been caused by people driven to madness by a sudden intense fear of Batman, apparently due to some online videos which paint the hero as a villain. This is beyond his usual enemy the Scarecrow’s ability, the Bat believes, so it must be the Sinestro Corps who are behind it. Hence calling in Simon and Jessica.

So here we are, the final issue of the title that launched Titan’s Assassin’s Creed stable of books. Fourteen issues seems way too short, but in this era of continually new and defined story arcs, continually new number 1′s, and stories specifically paced to fill the right amount of pages in an upcoming collection, par for the course. I’ll miss the book and its creative team, but I’m guessing the characters will still show up elsewhere. If they all survive this last issue of course.
So where were we? Last issue had seen Charlotte inhabiting the body of Hiram Stoddard, a sixteenth century ancestor. As the dramatics of that era played out, back in the present at the Erudito compound ,where Charlotte and the Assassins are based, all hell was breaking loose.

Australia’s premier genre film festival Monster Fest wrapped its most successful edition to date last night in Melbourne with official closing film The Greasy Strangler (with actors Sky Elobar and Elizabeth De Razzo in person) followed by its annual awards ceremony acknowledging the best of this year’s impressive lineup.
The features jury, consisting of Fantastic Fest head programmer Evrim Ersoy, filmmaker Donna McRae and longtime screen critic Simon Foster awarded the festival’s top prize, The Golden Monster, to Julia Ducournau’s Raw, with Ducournau in person to accept her award, beautifully designed and sculpted by Rain Gidley Studios. Raw also walked away with an honour for best FX.
“Monsters Choice” audience awards also went to two of Nerdly’s current favourite Ozploitation filmmakers: Stuart Simpson (Monstro!, Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla) for his short Dragon Force; and Addison Heath (Under a Kaleidoscope) for his new feature Mondo Yakuza.

The Assassin’s Creed seemingly ever expanding stable of books is of such strong quality that I wait to see every month if they can maintain that quality, or if one of the titles start to dip noticeably. So far none have, and that is because they have all managed to forge their own identities. Assassin’s Creed: Templars for example has a more mature readers feel to it, Assassin’s Creed: Locus emphasises the ancestors more. This book, the central Assassin’s Creed title is the more traditional AC book, in the sense that it focuses mainly on the central Assassins/Templar conflict in the present, and the ancestors stories are always secondary. In that sense, it is the glue that binds together all the other books.

I’ve missed the last 2 or 3 issues of this title, so was looking forward to see if I could just pick it straight back up and continue where I left off. I was pleased to see the same creative team in place, as Del Col, McCreery and Edwards have proved a great team to delve around in the ever expanding Assassin’s Creed universe. I liked this title from the start, it had a great female lead in Charlotte, and picked some interesting timeframes and ancestors to play with. The sense of continuity was very well defined too, as individual adventures, as fun as they tended to be, always fed into the wider, ongoing narrative.

Comic Book Reviews: DC Round Up Week 07-20-2016
After a two week absence I return to see what the current state of DC’s Rebirth is in! How are the Gotham Siblings doing? Are they evil yet? What’s going on with Aquaman and the anti-Atlantism? Are those two silly Lanterns still squabbling over inane stuff? Well read on to find out all about the wonderful world of DC Comics!

Last issue was a little disappointing, as the great pace and progression of the first two issues gave way to an issue of essentially treading water, where very little actually happened. We still followed Charlotte in the present day, still on the run, and her ancestor Quila back in sixteenth century Peru, but the excitement came from what was on the horizon rather than what was happening in front of us right then and there. The theme of last issue seemed to be what happens when team work fails, as Quila and Pardo found in the past, and Charlotte and the Assassins cell find in the present.
The teamwork theme carries through to this issue, but with a more positive spin showing us what happens when teamwork works, when people put distrust...

After last issue’s hectic pace I was curious to see if we were going to draw some breathe with this one, or that pace was just indicative of how this arc will play out. Assassins Creed as a game of course requires you to jump from one set piece scenario to another, so it would be quite fitting. Last issue saw us essentially following two stories, that of Charlotte and her Assassins cell on the run in the modern day, and her sixteenth century ancestor Quila trying to prevent the assassination of the Incan Emperor (via the animus machine of course, which allows Charlotte to access and inhabit the memories of her ancestors). High stakes at play all round, and handled very well indeed by the creative team.

The first arc of this title, Trial By Fire, turned out to be great fun. Sure, it had a few ups and downs along the way but ultimately was a solid addition to the Assassin’s Creed universe, and not only established a status quo but established one and then promptly ripped it up. Our heroine was/is Charlotte de la Cruz, recruited by the ‘good’ Assassins Brotherhood to fight the ‘bad’ Templars. Along the way though, she soon discovered ‘good’ and ‘bad’ are far too simplistic terms for the Assassins/ Templar conflict, as both sides have very dirty hands, something she discovers at great cost at the end of the last issue. So like the second act in a solid action film, where can she go from here?

Wonder Woman Earth One Vol. 1
U.S. Price: $22.99
Talent
Art by: Yanick Paquette
Cover by: Yanick Paquette

I have become a really big fan of the Earth One series DC has created. With the first series of Batman and Superman being successful it was only natural that Wonder Woman would be next. Plus anything written by Grant Morrison is a must to own.
Synopsis: In this new installment of the New York Times best-selling Earth One original graphic novel line, Grant Morrison (The Multiversity) joins with Yanick Paquette (Swamp Thing, Batman, Inc.) to reimagineWonder Woman for a new era.

So here we are, the final issue of this first Assassin’s Creed arc. Del Col and McCreery have so far delivered a very good addition to the Assassin’s Creed universe in lead character Charlotte de la Cruz, though perhaps pushing her back a little bit too much in the shadows at times, and her ancestor Tom Stoddard, probably the real ‘star’ so far of this arc. It has been entertaining stuff, but like a game of football no point having a great build up without any actual pay off at the end. So does this issue deliver?
Now the action has shifted from following ancestor Tom’s exploits through the Animus into the present, we finally get to see Charlotte take centre stage. Is she ready to take on the...

As tie-ins go, this has been a pretty impressive effort so far by all involved, using the familiarity of the Assassin’s Creed brand and world, but expanding it by introducing new characters and new wrinkles to an occasionally strained formula. The nod to the strain between the actions of ancestors, with their own set of morals and values, and to their present day descendants, often very uncomfortable with said actions but unable to alter them, is a good one. The blurring of lines so far has also been interesting. Are the Assassins really right? Do the Templars not actually have similar intentions but just choose a different way to reach them?

Issue 1 of this series hit the ground running, and I’ve been looking forward to seeing where the creative team go from there. Assassin’s Creed, as a concept, is of course a creative gold mine as there is very little you cannot do, or very few places you cannot go. All times and places are open to you, by virtue of the protagonists being able to inhabit the bodies of their ancestors in the past. Del Col and McCreery used this to good effect last issue.
Speaking of last issue, a quick recap to get you up to speed. Our hero Charlotte (anti-hero?) has been contacted by The Brotherhood after excelling on their Helix training, although she only thought it was a video game. After surviving an assault by the Templar’s,...

I am never quite sure if being a fan of a certain property is a positive or negative when reviewing it. Can you be too generous with praise? or do you subject it to tougher than normal scrutiny? This is partly my dilemma reviewing Assassins Creed: Trial By Fire. I have played all the games, and am definitely a fan, so this book was intriguing to me. It has a very promising creative team on board, notably the excellent artist Neil Edwards but also the co-writers of Idw series Kill Shakespeare, Del Col and McCreery, which has a very unique voice.
The main story is very straight forward to pick up, perhaps too easy, as though the writers felt they had to take it easy on the reader and spoon feed us the plot and main characters.

So, here we are. Cornell and Edwards have led us a merry chase these previous four issues, throwing in some genuine surprises, such as the identity of the architect of it all, some nice reminders of Who lore, even a little disappointment (is it just me that hoped the Time War and the War Doctor featured a bit more?). The question I had picking this final issue up was did Cornell put so much effort into the journey he had nothing left for the grand finale.
Doctors and Companions were all left in something of a pickle last issue, and Cornell throws this all up in the air by using the old Dr Who stand-by – send someone down the time stream to prevent said event from ever happening. In this case, Gabby returns to the...

Issue 4 of 5 of the Dr Who Event, and after the events at the end of last issue we know we are very much into the home straight. The Event for those coming in late, is the (somewhat reluctant) teaming up of the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors and their respective companions, a dash of the War Doctor and The Time War, and the revelation that a future/ alternate timeline Twelfth Doctor is trying to destroy pretty much everyone in partnership with the Voord. Has it been as much fun as it sounds? You bet. Can Cornell keep hitting balls out of the park? Now that is a good question..

Well, here we are, at the Issue 3 midway point of the Dr Who Event, the ‘event’ being a 5 comic mini-series published weekly and teaming up the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth incarnations of The Doctor. For the record, the teaming up of different incarnations of The Doctor just never gets old, be it television or comic book. Very few comics make me smile as I read them, but so far the Four Doctors most definitely has.
As there is quite a lot going on, a brief recap may be in order. The Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth incarnations of The Doctor have created a time paradox by all meeting up together, albeit accidentally. Or not all that accidentally as it turns out as it seems they have been manipulated into it by forces unseen. The Reapers then attacked,...

After such a strong start to the Dr Who Event, the ‘event’ being a 5 comic mini-series published weekly and teaming up the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth incarnations of The Doctor, I was curious to see if writer Paul Cornell and artist Neil Edwards could continue hitting home runs. They had set a high standard, in tone, character, and storyline and I was hoping it would continue.
To briefly recap, the current Doctor’s companion Clara had discovered a photograph of the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors meeting, but a meeting that apparently would lead to serious consequences (time paradoxes, fixed points in time etc etc). Despite her best efforts to stop them meeting, all the incarnations of The Doctor and (with Clara) all three companions ended up in 1920′s Paris at the same point in time.

Hands up if growing up watching Dr Who the episodes you remember the most were the ones where different incarnations of the Doctor teamed up, time paradox be damned. They were always fun and memorable, and often the highlight of the series. Well, Titan Comics are tapping into that with their ‘Dr Who Event 2015′, and teaming up the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelve incarnations of the Doctor (that’s David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi to the laymen among you) in The Four Doctors. Can We Please Just Get A Comic Book Adaptation Of ‘Jericho’ Already?
And no, I’m not talking about that one TV show. I think they already did a comic of that and that got cancelled too.
No, I’m referring to the video game ‘Jericho,’ written by Cliver Barker. It is seriously gut-wrenching stuff. I mean, it wasn’t a great game. But it would make a hell of a comic book.
Nightbreed #1
Writer: Marc Andreyko
Artist: Piotr Kowalski
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $4 (Digital)
I’m the worst Cliver Barker fan in existence. I’ve literally only read one book by him (‘The Inhuman Condition’ aka ‘Books of Blood Volume IV’) and I’ve seen a grand sum of One movie based on his works: ‘Midnight Meat Train’ (‘Rawhead Rex’ doesn’t count). And yes, this means I’ve never seen ‘Candyman,’ though I’ve listened to the...

I’ve gone on record many times about how I enjoy much of DC Comics’ digital line. I’ve even been snotty enough to note that, unlike much of The New 52, these titles are quite readable and are DC’s saving grace. So I’ll take it one step further.
One of these weekly digital titles is called Adventures of Superman. Yes, I realize it’s not the first comic book (let alone teevee or radio show) to employ this name. This doesn’t matter. Like DC’s digital Legends of the Dark Knight weekly, each story is by a separate creative team and said stories usually run across several “issues.”
If you’re thinking about sampling, let me strongly recommend the three-part story that was just completed (Adventures of Superman numbers 31, 32 and 33). The story is called “The Dark Lantern” (yes, I will not be surprised when DC does “The...

Jeff Parker's Thunderbolts has been one of the most consistently great comic books on the stands each and every month. The writer took over the series with issue #138 at the beginning of "The Heroic Age" in 2009 and the title was brought under the Avengers family of titles last year when it was re-branded Dark Avengers. Well, after 52 issues, his run comes to an end with #190; billed as the final issue in Marvel's May 2013 solicitations. You can read an interview I did with Parker a few years back by clicking Here. Sound off with your thoughts on this news in the usual place! • Final Issue! • The secret of the dark Earth are revealed! • Who will live? Who will die? Like last year’s Top 10 Comics of 2011, quite a few series that were in the Top 10 New Comics of 2011 have migrated over to this list, but to my surprise many of my favourite comics of 2012 were my favourites of 2011. My criteria for selection were based on how quickly I read the comics after picking up my standing order.
1: Uncanny X-Force | Marvel | W: Rick Remender | A: Phil Noto
For the third year running – The Best X-men Series, and still my favourite comic, the inclusion of Phil Noto replacing Opena on art has done nothing to harm this comic, I’ve always been a big Noto fan ? Perfect writing, amazing artwork, it’s a shame it had to end.
2: Secret Avengers | Marvel | W: Rick Remender | A: Matteo Scalera

Marvel's The Avengers: Black Widow Strikes will be published as a serial in the Russian version of Maxim before being released as a three issue comic book this May. Written by Fred Van Lente and with art by Wellinton Alves, Renato Arlem, Neil Edwards, Steve Kurth, Ron Lim and Agustin Padilla, the tie-in will be aimed at a slightly different audience than you might expect from this type of series. "It's more risqué material than the typical licensed comic. Let's just say I spent an entire morning going through the photo galleries of nightclubs in Moscow, and 'all-ages' are not the first words that leap to mind to describe them." "The basic premise of the story is that Natasha's hunting down bootleg Stark Industries technology created by Justin Hammer and Whiplash from Iron Man 2, Van Lente revealed. "So there's kind of a bridge between Iron Man 2 and Marvel...

Released in August 1962, Amazing Fantasy #15 did something different. It introduced new hero Spider-Man, who was neither a spider or a man, he was a teenager boy. This was a first for comics, a medium where young characters were relegated to the role of sidekick, mentored by the hero until they were of age to take up the mantle.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the character received no such mentoring, instead learning how to be a hero ‘on the job’. He was so popular with younger readers, who related with the character’s “self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness”, that he quickly became Marvel’s top selling character, and a cultural icon (in a 1965 Esquire poll it was found that college students ranked him and the Hulk alongside Bob Dylan and Che Guevara as their favorite revolutionary icons.)
