Today, it was announced that screenwriter Billy Ray will deliver the keynote address at the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting ceremony on Thursday, November 8, at the Beverly Wilshire. Ray, who co-wrote this summer’s “The Hunger Games,” also wrote and directed “Breach” (2007) and “Shattered Glass” (2003). He is the writer of “Captain Phillips,” starring Tom Hanks, which is scheduled for release in 2013. The Academy annually awards up to five Nicholl fellowships of $35,000 each. Selected from a record 7,197 scripts, it was announced today that five writers have been selected as winners of the 2012 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. Each writer will receive a $35,000 prize, the first installment of which will be distributed at a gala dinner in Beverly Hills on November 8.

The Academy announces ten finalists for the 2012 Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. The next step is having their scripts read and judged by the fellowship committee, which can choose to award up to five $35,00 fellowships. Matt Umbarger of Irvine, Calif., took the first place award, worth $10,000, in the 10th annual Scriptapalooza screenwriting competition for his screenplay "The Terminals." Damian Lahey and Ian Ogden of Brooklyn, N.Y., were the second place winners for "Child in the Dark," while Los Angeles' Heather Regnier was the third place winner for "Sober Living."
Scriptapalooza president Mark Andrushko also announced 10 runners-up: "360," by Richard Nguyen-Marshall; "A Revolution in Urination," Christian Heinze; "Carnies," Dean Ward & Matt Ward; "Cedarpine Views," Mischa Ayoub; "Palmer," Cheryl Guerriero; "Soulmates," David Birkenhead; "Spring-heeled Jack," David Pardue; "The Fahey Men," Jane Holahan; "Three Rivers," Brian Loschiavo & Josh Macuga; and "Willie Francis Must Die Again," Allan Durand.
