After its debut at Sundance in January, where it earned the World Cinema Dramatic Competition award for directing, Ukrainian wartime drama “Klondike” nabbed top honors for best international film at the Chile’s 18th Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic).
“Klondike,” written, directed and edited by Ukrainian filmmaker Marina Er Gorbach (“Omar and Us”), tells the story of expectant couple Irina and Anatoly who live in the village of Grabove, near the Russia-Ukraine border during the high conflict that coincides with downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. The couple faces devastation up-close as Irina refuses to relocate, even as troops close in.
Best director went to Chile’s Roberto Baeza for his documentary effort “Punto de Encuentro,” a gripping portrait of filmmakers striving to recreate the story of their fathers, tortured and imprisoned under the dictatorship.
Tyler Taormina (“Ham On Rye”) feature “Happer’s Comet,” which examines alienation by focusing on characters from his Long Island hometown,...

Stars: Michael Cera, Juno Temple, Emily Browning, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Agustín Silva, Luis Dubó, Roxana Naranjo, Lorenza Aillapán, John Carlos Huenchunao, Rayén Aliquintuy | Written and Directed by Sebastian Silva
Chilean director, Sebastian Silva, the man responsible for the bizarre Michael Cera fronted Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus (2013), made another film in 2013, and that film also starred Michael Cera. Magic Magic is that film.
A thriller with elements of horror and a surreal tone that runs throughout the film’s 97 minute running time, Magic Magic is an unusual little movie that will appeal to some and also piss a lot of people off.
Juno Temple (Killer Joe) plays Alicia, a young American girl who takes a trip to Chile with her cousin, Sarah, played by Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty, Sucker Punch). Sarah and Alicia, along with three of Sarah’s friends, go to a remote island to stay in a cabin.

#25. The Year of the Tiger Director: Sebastián LelioCast: Luis Dubó, Sergio Hernández, Viviana HerreraDistributor: Rights Available Buzz: One more standout item from the Vanguard programme offerings is this low budget Chilean film that garnered favorable reviews (Variety, THR and IndieWIRE) but went home empty handed at this year's Locarno Film Festival. Sebastián Lelio's third feature film (following his Cannes selected Navidad in 2009) puts a damaged landscape from Chile's deadly 2010 quake to extremely good use. The Gist: Perhaps a good starter-kit prior to the release of Life of Pi, Chile's devastating earthquake of February 27th, 2011, inadvertently converts prisoner Manuel into a fugitive. As he futilely searches for loved ones, he encounters a caged tiger washed up on shore. After freeing the beast, Manuel realizes that neither of them have much of a chance for survival in the present landscape. Tiff Schedule: Saturday September 10 Tiff Bell Lightbox 3 7:30pm Monday September...

Photo: Content Media The 2011 Toronto International Film Festival announced 56 more movies added to its festival line-up this year with selections in the Vanguard, Midnight Madness, Documentaries, City to City and Tiff Kids programs. And to be honest, the line-up is filled with titles, most of which are absolutely new to me.
I have seen one of the films under the Vanguard banner, a selection of young and cutting edge features and I've heard of Joachim Trier's Oslo, August 31, Ben Wheatley's Kill List (watch the trailer to the right) was a hit at South by Southwest earlier this year and the documentary selections include familiar names such as Werner Herzog, Morgan Spurlock, Jonathan Demme, Alex Gibney and Wim Wenders, the latter of which is delivering a 3D documentary centered on the dance world of Pina Bausch and her company.

"Three friends in a nightmare trekking at the Andes Mountains"
From Chile comes a new horror film (due to DVD on 2/22/11) which raises the good old question of won't kids learn by now that you can't engage in risque activity in foreign countries without incurring the wraith of the locals? Guess they never saw films like "And Soon The Darkness", "Turistas" or "Hostel"! Starring is Luis Dubó, Wil Edgar, Patricia Gonzalez and Macarena Paz Chacon in a film directed by León Errázuriz of: The Goatherd.
Ilenka is Polish, but she has lived almost all her life in the Us. Now she has come to visit Chile with Wil, her American boyfriend, and to meet up with Ana, her childhood friend. Ana is the Chilean daughter of diplomats who spent part of her youth in the Us, and now lives in Chile. The three have decided to hike up to the El Morado Glacier,...
