Biographical films are beloved by viewers, the Academy Awards, and Hollywood alike. Their dominance in the cinematic landscape is evidenced by the plethora of Best Picture winners. Numerous actors have been honored for bringing these historical figures to life on screen.
Biopics have been a mainstay in the movie-making industry for years, never failing to deliver both critically acclaimed success and box office hits. Although the genre has seen a surge in popularity over the past few years, its power remains undiminished. Recent additions to the biography genre from 2022 like ‘Thirteen Lives’ directed by Ron Howard and ‘Elvis’ starring Tom Hanks and Austin Butler are proof of this.

Hello, everyone! Last Friday, we kicked off Indie Horror Month with a tribute to all the great independent genre movies that came out during the 1970s (you can read that article Here), and before we move on to celebrating all the great indie horror from the following decade, I thought it was worth taking some time to tip our hats to several more movies from the ’70s that fans should definitely take some time to check out if they haven’t done so already. And because I always want to try and be as helpful as possible, I’ve also included info on where you can currently stream these films in case you’re looking to fill in some horror history gaps for yourself.
And in case you missed it, we also recapped where a bunch of essential indie horror movies from the 1970s are streaming (you can check out that list Here).

Any WW2 action adventure involving the Norwegian resistance is Ok in my book, and this big-star saga about sabotage efforts to stop the Nazis’ atom research is a natural — much of what happens in the story is true. The show can boast marvelous locations and excellent action scenes but the script and characters aren’t very strong. Did Columbia curb epic director Anthony Mann’s greater ambitions, or did star Kirk Douglas interfere to enhance his leading character into a combo scientist, playboy and sure-shot action man? Also starring Ulla Jacobsson, Richard Harris, Michael Redgrave, and every over-fifty English name actor not nailed down.

Dick Van Dyke isn’t the only star of the classic 1964 Walt Disney musical fantasy “Mary Poppins” who appears in the current sequel “Mary Poppins Returns,” which stars Emily Blunt taking over from Julie Andrews as the practically perfect nanny. Karen Dotrice, who played Jane Banks in the original film, has a cameo as a woman walking down Cherry Tree Lane and asks grown-up Jane (Emily Mortimer) for directions.
Dotrice, 63 and the mother of three, is the daughter of the late British acting couple, Kay and Roy Dotrice. She made her acting debut on the London stage as a four-year-old in “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” which starred her godfather, the legendary Charles Laughton. And it just so happened a casting director looking for a little girl to star in Disney’s 1964 “The Three Lives of Thomasina” caught her performance. Emilia Clarke got incredibly blunt when talking to Harpar’s Bazaar about the nudity and sex scenes on HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” Over the last seven seasons, the hit series has received its fair share of backlash over what some viewers and critics perceive as gratuitous nudity, but Daenerys Targaryen no longer wants to hear anybody’s complaints.

It appears Kit Harington has been boning up on his feminist literature. The “Game of Thrones” star retracted and apologized for an earlier statement about men experiencing “sexism” in the entertainment industry. “[T]here’s a sexism that happens towards men…as well,” Harington told The Cut last year, prompting the ire of feminist writers and Jon Snow fans everywhere. Harington recently set the record straight, however, amending his statement with what sounds like genuine understanding and empathy.

What is dead may never die, and so it is that “Game of Thrones” won’t really be over when it’s over. The show itself is concluding with the eighth and final season, which will air either next year or in 2019, but several different prequel series are in development. 1719 Leopold Mozart, Amadeus's father is born in Augsburg Germany. In the 1984 movie phenomenon, one of the biggest hits of its year and the winner of 8 Oscars, he's played by Roy Dotrice and factors in heavily to the film's haunting imagery (and poster). Or to quote Salieri as played by F Murray Abraham:
So rose the dreadful ghost from his next and blackest opera. There, on the stage, stood the figure of a dead commander. And I knew, only I understood that the horrifying aparition was Leopold, raised from the dead! Wolfgang had actually summoned up his own father to accuse his son before all the world! It was terrifying and wonderful to watch. And now the madness began in me. The madness of the man splitting in half. Through my influence, I saw to it Don Giovanni was played only five times in Vienna.

Writer Derek Pykett (whose excellent book " MGM British Studios: Hollywood in Borehamwood" was reviewed here earlier this year) has turned his hand to directing; setting up and playing host to a dozen intimate interviews with some of Britain's most respected and beloved thesps, the results are now available on DVD with "From Stage to Screen", a privately produced, limited edition 6-disc box set.
With each performer given their own ‘episode’ and a total running time of 15 hours, there's so much material here that it'll take the average viewer a number of sittings to get through it all. Beyond starting with disc one and working through methodically, where one begins is probably going to be proportionate to the level of esteem in which the viewer holds each particular actor or actress represented within the set; I confess that at the time of writing I still have a fair bit to get through.

A killer robot powered by baby brains. Kirk Douglas wrestling in the nude. Ryan revisits the very weird 80s sci-fi movie, Saturn 3...
Some movies aspire to strangeness. Other movies have strangeness thrust upon them.
Saturn 3, released in 1980, was an intensely strange film. But unlike, say, Altered States (also released in 1980) it wasn’t made by a filmmaker with a taste for the oblique or the outre. Unlike Luigi Cozzi’s Contamination (1980 again), Saturn 3 wasn’t a low-budget shocker made in a hurry, but a relatively expensive exercise created by some of the most seasoned filmmakers in the business at that time. (For frame of reference, Saturn 3's budget was broadly the same as Alien’s, released less than one year earlier.)
On the surface, Saturn 3 sounds like a perfectly reasonable recipe for an intense sci-fi horror flick. It’s about a pair...

'Nicholas and Alexandra': Movie starred Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman 'Nicholas and Alexandra' movie review: Opulent 1971 spectacle lacks emotional core Nicholas and Alexandra is surely one of the most sumptuous film productions ever made. The elaborate sets and costumes, Richard Rodney Bennett's lush musical score, and frequent David Lean collaborator Freddie Young's richly textured cinematography provide the perfect period atmosphere for this historical epic. Missing, however, is a screenplay that offers dialogue instead of speeches, and a directorial hand that brings out emotional truth instead of soapy melodrama. Nicholas and Alexandra begins when, after several unsuccessful attempts, Tsar Nicholas II (Michael Jayston) finally becomes the father of a boy. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife, the German-born Empress Alexandra (Janet Suzman), have their happiness crushed when they discover that their infant son is a hemophiliac. In addition to his familial turmoil, the Tsar must also deal with popular...

Billy finds fresh meat on the gothic horror table with The Strain, from the creative mind of Guillermo del Toro and friends...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Night Zero
In terms of having a pedigree, The Strain ticks all the critical boxes, and then some. I’m a huge fan of the work of Guillermo del Toro and this show is based on a series of novels that he and Chuck Hogan wrote. He also directs the opening episode, and Chuck Hogan also helped co-write it. What could possibly go wrong?
I was somewhat concerned that in the first couple of minutes this show managed to deliver at least two Wtf moments. But before I get to them, it’s worth noting that the arrival of an aircraft travelling from Germany to the USA where everyone is dead isn’t the most original opening for a TV series. Because that...

Toronto, On. With "Lost" (and "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr," if you like) front and center on his resume, Carlton Cuse knows a thing or two relating to fanboys, but that's actually how he originally came to Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's "The Strain" series. "Almost two years ago, I was approached by Wme and asked whether I actually knew this property, 'The Strain' trilogy," Cuse recalls, sitting with a small roundtable of reporters on the Toronto set of "The Strain," which premieres on FX on July 13. "In fact, I had read the first book just as a fanboy, just because I was intrigued by it and loved Guillermo's stuff. I actually had a little bit of a relationship with Chuck Hogan. We had talked at one point about doing something else together. I really loved the book. So Wme said, 'Hey, would you consider meeting with Guillermo?...

In honor of the Sochi Games, PopWatch is taking a look back at a few of our favorite Winter Olympics-themed movies. First up: The Cutting Edge, the classic 1992 “hockey player meets figure skater” romantic comedy. We talked to star D.B. Sweeney — who played cocky ex-hockey star Doug Dorsey, opposite Moira Kelly’s snooty ice queen Kate Moseley — about the making of the film, the impossible physics of its climactic bounce-spin-throw (the “Pamchenko”), and its truly wretched sequels. Toe pick!
Entertainment Weekly: First of all: Do you resent people still asking you about The Cutting Edge?
D.B. Sweeney: No, it’s great.

Saturn 3, starring Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett, will be released to Blu-ray/DVD later this year and Scream Factory had provided us with new release details:
“Adam (Kirk Douglas) and Alex (Farrah Fawcett) are two scientists stationed deep beneath the barren surface of Saturn’s third moon, Titan. They live together in idyllic isolation in a space-age Eden, seeking new forms of food for an exhausted planet Earth. Their perfect world is interrupted when Benson (Harvey Keitel) arrives as Saturn goes into eclipse and cuts off communication with the rest of the solar system. Aided by his ‘helper robot’ Hector, James reduces life to one single purpose…survival. The robot becomes violently unmanageable. For Adam and Alex, their only hope is to flee, but the homicidal robot stands in their way. Produced and directed by legendary filmmaker Stanley Donen (Singin’ In The Rain, Charade and Seven Brides For Seven Brothers...

"The Ghost of Harrenhal"
I’m getting déjà vu. Much like in the first season, Game of Thrones took a while to get into its stride, the first half of the season being primarily set up, things only really starting to get interesting around the half-way mark. Season two seems to be doing the same. That said, as good a piece of television as this hour of Game of Thrones was, there were several noticeable discrepancies between the show and the books.
This episode wasted no time, immediately opening with Renly’s death. I have to confess some disappointment with the execution of the scene, though – there was very little subtlety involved here, and as I said last week, the shadow being given human form is a lot more blatant than I’d expected, even more so now that the shadow was in the shape of Stannis. The sound effects...

Game of Thrones Season 2 Trailer. The Seven Devils Game of Thrones TV show trailer features a song entitled (I presume) ‘Seven Devils’, song sweetly by a female singer. The Game of Thrones Seven Devils trailer features all new footage for season two of Game of Thrones. The part when the singer or singers say “seven devils are around you” after Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) is finished speaking is pretty powerful. Also we are shown that parts of the second and third books in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series are represented in season two. Why do I saw that (spoilers): The Unsullied are shown as well as the moment of their purchase. That happens in A Storm of Swords, the third book in the series (end spoilers). Like it says in the prologue of one of the books though, some events happen coterminous with other events...

Game of Thrones Season 2 Trailer. The HBO Go ’First Look’ Game of Thrones TV show trailer brings into focus many aspects of the new season of the HBO show, chief among that Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) will play a pivotal role since he is shown over and over again. [1] HBO's epic fantasy series Game of Thrones was such a big hit when it premiered this past spring that the network renewed [2] it for a second season just days after the first episode aired. But it's been a long three months since the first season ended, and with the advent of the fall TV season, even the most diehard fans probably haven't thought about the series in quite some time. In an effort to remind you of just how much you're looking forward to Season 2, HBO has released a very short new teaser. The video reveals pretty much nothing, aside from what seems to be the marketing slogan for the new season, but I welcome the reminder all the same. Watch it after the jump. The 17-second teaser not only has no new footage, there's actually no footage at all, despite the fact that the series has been shooting since earlier this summer.

Lisa Nolan Game of Thrones Season 2 quits over nudity. Lisa Nolan of Game of Thrones: Season 2 nudity quit surprised many, including probably show writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. “Model turned actress Lisa Nolan has abruptly quit her role as a King’s mistress after being asked to bare all for a sex scene in HBO’s dark fantasy Emmy nominated series, returning in early 2012.” Game of Thrones: Season 1 was chalk full of nudity in varying degrees, especially with the women of the HBO show. Ron Perlman is staying pretty busy with his gig on Sons of Anarchy, but he doesn’t think his schedule is so full that he couldn’t make time to appear in HBO’s Game of Thrones. The gentle giant recently shared his interest with AccessHollywood, saying he’d “love to be in ‘Game of Thrones,” and there are plenty of Tinsel Town connections to make a Thrones guest role a definite possibility. Perlman has worked with George R.R. Martin before when the Song of Ice and Fire author wrote for the series, Beauty and the Beast, which starred Perlman as one of the title characters. Incidentally, he wasn’t the beauty.

It’s a new day, and that means it’s time for more Game of Thrones Season 2 casting news. This time around, it’s been revealed that British actor Ben Crompton will portray Night’s Watch member Dolorous Edd. George R.R. Martin, the author of the Song of Ice and Fire series, has been providing clues to Edd’s identity on his blog. The clues led many to name Crompton, and Access Hollywood recently revealed that Martin has officially confirmed the casting news.
Dolorous Edd, who works for Lord Commander Jeor Mormont (James Cosmo), joins the Night’s Watch to aid Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) in the search for Snow’s uncle, Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle).
HBO’s Emmy-nominated Game of Thrones has been adding new faces at a fast and furious pace, with Karl Davies, Hannah Murray, Roy Dotrice, and Tom Wlaschiha also joining the battle for the Iron Throne.
