- He worked in music publishing and as a freelance arranger for Oscar Straus, Franz Lehár and Robert Stolz, among others.

- Before he entered the world of music he studied law at the University of Vienna. Finally he developed the music and graduated a music study at the Academy for church music in Klsoterneuburg where he achieved first attention with his "Grossen Messe" from 1913.
- In 1942 he married the opera singer Lillie Claus, by whom he had one son, Roman Dostal, later a conductor.
- After World War II he moved to Vienna and eight years later to Salzburg where he continued his career as a composer.
- Dostal also composed church music along with operettas and film music.
