Sonia Manzano played Maria on “Sesame Street” for over 40 years, becoming a household name in the U.S. and a trailblazing Latina in the burgeoning public television landscape. Now, Manzano is trading Muppets for the mofongo-loving Alma Rivera, a six-year-old animated Puerto Rican girl of her own invention (and heavily based on her own experience), who lives in the Bronx with her parents, brother and a host of colorful neighbors.
“Alma’s Way” engages directly with viewers as its optimistic and confident protagonist works through challenges and spends time with her diverse friend group, showcasing various aspects of Latin culture, food and music along each episode’s 11-minute trajectory. Co-executive produced by Manzano and Ellen Doherty, chief creative officer of Fred Rogers Productions, and animated by Pipeline Studios, the series hopes to teach children social awareness through the characters’ modeling of empathetic decision-making processes and “Think-Through” moments.

Classic characters from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” are being reimagined in the new children’s series “Donkey Hodie” from Fred Rogers Productions and Spiffy Pictures that premieres today, Monday, May 3, on PBS.
The series follows the original puppet’s precocious namesake granddaughter whose big ideas sometimes get the best of her, but, with the help of Grampy and her friends, she learns to keep on trying. Each half-hour episode features two 11-minute stories.
The idea for the show started with the folks at Fred Rogers Productions. “We were looking at a list of character names from ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ and Donkey Hodie was so funny, it made us laugh,” chief creative officer Ellen Doherty recalls. “An idea started percolating about a preschool show about a little donkey with big dreams and the idea of perseverance and grit, and how apt that is for preschoolers who are little kids with really big feelings.

PBS Kids announced the production of “Alma’s Way,” an animated series created by Sonia Manzano, who played Maria on “Sesame Street” for over 40 years.
The upcoming show is slated to premiere on PBS stations as well as the PBS Kids channel and digital platforms in the fall of 2021. Its titular character, Alma Rivera, is a six-year-old Puerto Rican girl living in the Bronx with her parents and brother. Each story, about 11 minutes long, will engage directly with viewers as the Alma works through challenges and spends time with her diverse friend group.
“I am thrilled to return to public television and to work with PBS Kids and Fred Rogers Productions on this project inspired by my own childhood,” Manzano said. “Alma’s way is to think things through, and I hope by animating the thought process, kids will be inspired and excited about what goes on in their own minds.

For anyone who might not have noticed, we’re in the midst of a Fred Rogers moment.
Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Morgan Neville’s film about the late children’s television pioneer, climbed above the $22 million mark at the box office over the weekend, continuing its run as one of the most successful documentaries of recent years. But the Rogers resurgence extends beyond the theatrical space to the television arena. The documentary Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like, which aired on PBS, has broken through with a couple of Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.
It’s You I Like sprang from the Fred Rogers Company as a way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the debut of his show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, on PBS in 1968.
“We had been talking about all the kinds of things we might do in 2018 for the 50th,...
