I have to admit, I am not very fond of film’s adaptations and particularly iconic ones as John Woo’s “A Better Tomorrow.” Furthermore, the quality of the recent Chinese blockbusters left me somewhat disappointed. Thus, I was truly satisfied to see that Ding Sheng’s take on the Hk classic was a more than worthy effort.

Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Ding Sheng’s remake of John Woo’s classic A Better Tomorrow (1986) encapsulates much that’s wrong with contemporary mainstream cinema, both in China and abroad. Ding, most known for directing moderately successful latter-day Jackie Chan vehicles like Railroad Tigers, Little Big Solider, and Policy Story 2013, is a competent director of action who seems to feel deeply bored by anything that doesn’t have an explosion of some type, and so he cuts aimlessly and pointlessly through expository dialogue and ostensibly character-building scenes, a remedial Michael Bay without any of the panache. The remake hews closely to the plot of the original film: a pair of gangster “brothers,” Triad counterfeiters in the first film, now Mainland smugglers, are betrayed on a mission in a foreign territory (first Taiwan,...

Already China’s second highest grossing Indian film after its first weekend, it’s now one of the top grossing non-Hollywood foreign films although it’s still a long way off from Dangal.

There is a thrilling selection of Chinese-language titles at Filmart this year. Liz Shackleton picks out some of the most promising.
With very few Hong Kong or mainland Chinese sellers making the journey to this year’s European Film Market in Berlin, Filmart offers a chance for buyers to catch up with the Chinese-language titles that will be rolled out in the region for the rest of the year.
After serving up the biggest film of the Chinese New Year holiday — Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan and directed by Stanley Tong — China’s Sparkle Roll Media has launched a Hong Kong-based sales arm that is selling Ding Sheng’s reboot of the A Better Tomorrow series.
Other high-profile action titles new to market include Distribution Workshop’s Extraordinary Mission, from the creative teams behind the Infernal Affairs and Overheard series, and Huayi Brothers’ crime drama Explosion, starring Duan Yihong.

"I started this mission. I will finish this mission." Well Go USA has revealed a new official Us trailer for the action comedy from China titled Railroad Tigers, about a "ragtag" group of freedom fighters who ambush a military train. Jackie Chan stars, playing a railroad worker who leads a team of skilled fighters trying to take out the Japanese in order to get food for the poor. Also starring Huang Zitao, Wang Kai, Darren Wang, Alan Ng and Sang Ping. The first teaser trailer for this was goofy, and this trailer isn't that much better, but at least the VFX aren't as bad. I really, really wished this looked better than it does, because it would be nice to have another fun Jackie Chan movie, but I'm not sure this is one. In theaters starting today. Railroad Tigers is a special breed of cinematic import so rooted in cultural normalities, it’s as if a wall stands between overseas viewers and total immersion. At heart, Jackie Chan’s latest adventure is a dangerous hicks-vs-military underdog mission – but comedic buffoonery distracts and disengages. Clarinets and oboes (or related instruments?) provide a bubbly soundtrack for a damning suicide mission, never to embrace the seriousness of sacrificial heft. Gunshots ring out as characters joke, while Chan’s cutesy martial artistry evokes a less-enthusiastic Drunken Master who fumbles clashing tonalities. I mean, it’s an immediate red flag when you endure more character-card introductions than Suicide Squad – that’s one runaway train you don’t want to imitate.
Chan stars as Ma Yuan, a humble railroad worker who also moonlights as a member of the Flying Tigers gang. Together, with his clan of misfits, Ma Yuan rebels against Japanese invaders.

Railroad Tigers is one of those films where, despite its few-versus-many premise, the antagonist often feels like the one with nine lives. That is to say, it is not star Jackie Chan and his small band of freedom fighters who seem like they are surviving by the skin of their teeth, but instead gliding effortlessly through hazardous scenarios. With its 1941 setting in a small Chinese town invaded by the Japanese, this feels like a bit of an anomaly. Yet Chan and company dodge around, knock-out, and dupe their exceptionally silly Japanese oppressors (led by Hiroyuki Ikeuchi of Ip Man villainy) through almost every set-piece and moment of tension, conjuring up images of Buster Keaton or Road Runner. This function makes for some giddily fun scenarios, with wonderful choreography and cartoonish violence, but director and editor Ding Sheng makes the mistake of stuffing his two-plus-hour runtime with unnecessary downtime and bouts of narrative incoherence.

Jackie Chan last found success in Hollywood by mentoring young Jaden Smith in a remake of the surprisingly decent The Karate Kid. That was more than six years ago. Since then, Chan has rarely been seen in North American theaters. Most recently, historical action epic Dragon Blade and buddy comedy Skiptrace both received token releases here; each has its own problems and neither represents Chan at his finest. Railroad Tigers sees Chan reuniting with director Ding Sheng for an action picture that really moves. That's a weak but true statement; for a late-period Chan movie, Railroad Tigers features a series of action sequences that sometimes defy the laws of physics but are mostly fun to watch unfold. Chan and Sheng began their collaboration with Little...

"Talk less": That's what Jackie Chan's character says in Railroad Tigers when his fellow fighters ask him for a stirring speech prior to their final assault on their Japanese enemies. More than just the rugged renegade's advice about actions speaking louder than words, the motto is perhaps director-screenwriter Ding Sheng's conclusion as to what works best for his veteran Hong Kong star these days.
In their third collaboration in six years, the director and star have left behind the morals and moral dilemmas anchoring their 2010 swordsman comedy Little Big Soldier and the more somber Police Story 2013. Revolving around a...

International icon Jackie Chan reunites with his current go-to director Ding Sheng for upcoming action comedy Railroad Tigers - a period set piece that see Chan playing a sort of Jesse James meets Robin Hood outlaw leading a band of resistence fighters against the Japanese occupation of China. Due for international release next month Railroad Tigers has been running a surprisingly low profile thus far - particularly surprising given that Chan's work with Sheng is by far the best of his late career period and the quality of the just released trailer is very good. Epically scaled and playful in equal measures this looks to be pretty vintage Chan in tone while also surrounding the star with a likeable young cast who appear perfectly game...

When you attach Jackie Chan's name to a film, describing that as an "action-comedy" feels oddly redundant. Railroad Tigers, directed by Ding Sheng, tells the story of freedom fighters that ambush a Japanese military train. Obviously, the team is somewhat ill prepared for the task. The action bordering on cartoonishness is exactly what we could expect from Chan and Sheng.

Saving Mr. Wu is one of the most uniquely terrifying movies you will watch this year. As death looms dangerously close, Mr. Wu has to utilize every instinct in his body to save himself.

"Hey, supercop!" Well Go has put out a trailer for the upcoming Us release of Police Story: Lockdown, the latest in the Police Story franchise starring Jackie Chan. The film actually played in China back in 2013, and is just now getting a release here in the Us, but this isn't the same goofy Jackie Chan we've seen so much of recently. He's as serious as ever in an action-drama where a reunion with his daughter goes bad, and then there's a big battle inside of a club. The cast includes Liu Ye, Jing Tian, Guli Nazha and Zhou Xiao Ou. I can't say this looks like an instant must see, but I'm down to check it out. Give it a look below. Here's the official Us trailer for Sheng Ding's Police Story: Lockdown, direct from Well Go USA: The newest chapter in the Police Story crime franchise stars Jackie Chan as Wen,...

The thought of Jackie Chan returning to the Police Story series after a nine year hiatus will have left many viewers in a temporary state of anxiety. The Police Story movies - particularly parts one, two and three - are hugely inventive action comedies starring Jackie at the top of his game. Action hero Chan first appeared as Inspector Chan Ka Kui in 1985, before returning to the series as Senior Inspector Chan Kwok-Wing in an unrelated - mostly worthwhile - 2004 entry. Jackie is getting on a bit now, so it would be unfair to expect the death-defying stunts we've become accustomed to over the years. Instead we get a dark and moody offering from director Sheng Ding, a far cry from their previous collaboration, the quirky action comedy Little Big Soldier. Inside an Industrial factory-turned-nightclub on a busy city street, all the patrons are being held hostage. Among them are...

Police Story 2013 (2013) After properly consuming Jackie Chan’s remarkably goofy and extremely lackluster cinematic endeavor “Chinese Zodiac,” I was definitely ready for something a bit more grounded and dramatic. Enter director Sheng Ding’s “Police Story 2013,” a flick that finds Chan trading over-the-top comedy with a surprisingly amount of emotion. Although the story itself is a little wimpy — a police officer, his daughter, and a few other characters are taken hostage by an angry club owner — Chan and company do a commendable job keeping things tense and engaging. And while the film doesn’t have too many action set pieces to speak of, the fight between Chan and a nasty thug inside a cage is remarkably enjoyable and surprisingly brutal. If you can look past Ding’s uninspired script and a somewhat misleading opening, “Police Story 2013″ should reaffirm your faith in Chan’s work. Although it’s the weakest entry in the franchise,...

The Four 2 (the second instalment in Gordon Chan’s three part martial arts fantasy) is heading for a Hong Kong release next month, so we thought it reasonable to assume an English subbed trailer would have come along for the ride? Well no such luck so far. Instead we’ve finally found it on an Indonesian movie site, of all places. Still....any port in a storm, or in this case a martial arts Wuxia fest. Synopsis: When the four constables of the Divine Constabulary investigate a murder in the suburbs, they unexpectedly stumble on clues to the murder of Sheng Ding Tian's family 12 years ago. While investigating the case, the constables discover facts about their past, facts they all would have preferred to keep hidden, and facts that force them to choose between old grudges and their new lives at the Divine Constabulary. And after a series of...

I haven't seen Jackie Chan in anything of note (besides lending his voice talent to a kids movie which turned out to be better than anticipated) but the action star is making a comeback in a very big way, one that's getting lots of attention outside China.
It appears that Police Story 2013 has very little to do with the previous action comedies that share both title and star. Chan and his mighty fighting ability are put to good use here as Chan plays a police officer investigating a kidnapping.
Director Sheng Ding and Chan worked together a few years ago on the action comedy Little Big Soldier but the pair, along with Ding regular Ye Liu, are taking things far more seriously here; Police Story 2013 looks like a gritty action thriller completely devoid of laughs. [Continued ...]...

This month saw the release of CZ12, a new action thriller from Jackie Chan, but that film has been released overseas for much longer. But later this year, international audiences will see Police Story 2013, a new film Chan's well known series of action films. However, unlike the previous installments, this sequel has no connection to Chan's earlier films as he plays a mainland Chinese Interpol officer investigating a kidnapping case. Now we have a trailer offering a peek at the wild stunts, fight sequences and more, but this film looks much more gritty and dark than anything we've seen Chan do before. It's a shame he didn't do this before. There's no English subtitles, but the action is the dominant force in the trailer anyway. Watch! Here's the international trailer for Sheng Ding's Police Story 2013, from Twitch: Sheng Ding (Little Big Soldier) directs Police Story 2013, the...

Jackie Chan’s “Police Story 2013″ is on its way to theaters in China this December. Judging from the latest poster for the flick, it looks as though the action star is taking the series in a darker direction. The “Police Story” movie, while enjoyable, are definitely not to be taken seriously. However, director Sheng Ding seems to be moving away from the goofier adventures for the next installment of the long-running franchise. Depending on what you want from Jackie Chan, this is either a good or a bad thing. I didn’t care much for Chan’s 2009 thriller “Shinjuku Incident” or his 2012 actioner “Chinese Zodiac,” albeit for different reasons. Here’s hoping “Police Story 2013″ finds a balance between dark drama and intense action. I’d love to see a well-balanced Jackie Chan movie right about now. Scratch that — I need it. “Police Story 2013″ stars Jackie Chan, Liu Ye,...

From the looks of the poster art to Jackie Chan's upcoming film Police Story 2013, it appears this will be more of a dramatic and gritty kind of animal compared to the comedic, stunt-heavy action thrill rides from the classic Police Story series. Directed by Sheng Ding (Little Big Soldier, Underdog Knight 1 & 2), the film is not related to the previous installments, with Jackie playing a mainland China Interpol officer sporting a new crew-cut hair style instead of the traditional long-haired daredevil Hong Kong cop. Mainland Chinese actor Liu Ye (Beginning of the Great Revival, City of Life and Death) has been cast as the villain and Chinese actress Tian Jing (Special ID, The Warring States) has been cast as the officer's daughter....

Little Big Soldier is a fantastic movie. The plot seems simple enough – a soldier who survives a massacre of his sides forces discovers a general from the other army alive. He decides to take this general back to the capitol to claim a reward so he can retire and become a farmer. This is where the simplicity evaporates. The story is filled with some fantastic twists and turns. It was really delightful to watch the complex relationship between the soldier and the general develop as the story progressed.

Even with war blazing all around him, Jackie Chan is all smiles in Little Big Soldier.
Legendary martial arts star Jackie Chan (The Spy Next Door) is the writer, producer and star of the 2010 period action-comedy movie Little Big Soldier, which premieres in the U.S. on Aug. 23 as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and single DVD from Well Go USA. Each carries the list price of $29.98 and $24.98, respectively.
Set in the war period in China between 476 BC and 221 BC, Little Big Soldier (directed by Sheng Ding) tells the story of two warriors from opposing states — a soldier (Chan) and a general (Wang Leehom), both of whom have different views on the war and world. A painfully funny journey commences when the soldier decides to abduct the downtrodden general and bring him back to his state in hopes of collecting a reward. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? I loved Sheng Ding’s martial arts comedy “Little Big Soldier”, due in part to my somewhat unhealthy obsession with the motion pictures of Jackie Chan. And while the film is saddled with a somewhat misleading title — it seems more like a family movie a la “The Spy Next Door” than a balls-out martial arts comedy — it is, perhaps, the strongest Chinese effort Chan has unleashed upon the masses in quite some time. Fortunately for UK fans, “Little Big Soldier” is scheduled to hit retail shelves in your neck of the proverbial woods on November 8th. For most of its surprisingly brief 96 minute running time, I loved Jackie Chan's Little Big Soldier. Let's say for for 93 of its 96 minutes as a ballpark figure. But then comes the final scene, the final shot that seems to upend what appeared to be the movie's overall theme about the futility and uselessness of nationalism. In the aims of preserving the ending for you, dear readers, I won't elaborate on what happens in those final 3 minutes or so, but it's enough of a disruption to nearly downgrade the movie for this me.

Jackie Chan stars as a lowly, unnamed Liang soldier who survives an ambush by Qin forces that decimates his 2000-strong army. The only other survivor appears to be a young Wei general (Wang Lee-hom) fighting for the Qin, who Chan’s character takes hostage and together they set off back to Liang, where he can collect a plot of land as reward for his captive. The injured general needs his captor if he is to reach civilization, but that doesn’t stop him attempting to escape, or at least take a swing or two, whenever the opportunity presents itself.
