As Power Rangers rides high at the box office, a look at what led to this point...
Lionsgate’s new Power Rangers film, out in cinemas now, is not a film which assumes any prior knowledge of the Power Rangers franchise. But that doesn’t stop it from containing a number of sly nods for long-term fans, and perhaps the slyest of these comes early in the movie, when Kimberly (Naomi Scott) is confronted in the school toilets by her frenemy Amanda. In a heated exchange, Amanda tells her:
“You shouldn’t have sent Tai that picture of me.”
Either this line is an extraordinary coincidence, or its middle words combine, Megazord-style, to form a tip of the hat towards Sentai - or rather, Super Sentai - the Japanese franchise from which the Power Rangers TV show has always taken the bulk (no pun intended) of its action footage.

The Power Rangers reboot has problems, certainly, but it's a whole lot of fun. Here's our review...
I’ll lay my cards on the table: I’m a Power Rangers fan. From the moment I first saw it, it ensnared me; when I wasn’t watching Power Rangers I was out with friends playing Power Rangers. And it’s never really left me - whilst I can’t say I’ve seen even half of the output after around 1997, I’ve kept it close to my heart.
That said, there’s a bit of a negative perception around the franchise; for everyone who remembers it fondly, there’s someone else who remembers it as a campy load of rubbish. And that may explain why Power Rangers - Lionsgate’s reboot of the franchise for the Marvel Studios generation - is afraid to be a Power Rangers film. Barring a giddy-yet-traumatic pre-credits sequence,...

But with no further sign of goodies from Morris and his team (though we are assured the search is ongoing), it’s fallen to BBC Worldwide and a team led by director Charles Norton to bring us the next best thing – an animated version of Troughton’s debut story The Power Of The Daleks.

11.6 Can Of Worms
Anyone who’s ever owned a cat will tell you that a lot of what they get up to, particularly when they’re outside the house, is a mystery. So in some ways, it’s fitting that Red Dwarf’s Cat is easily the character we know the least about. He’s only had one true focus episode, back in the very first series, and mostly exists to make scenes funnier. But on a ship with three other sort-of men, he’s had very little opportunity to indulge in one particular feline pastime - until now.

Note: This is our spoiler-filled review of episode 3 of Red Dwarf XI, currently available on the UKTV Play app. It will air on Dave at 9pm on Thursday the 13th of October.
11.4 Officer Rimmer
Many people believe that science fiction is at its best when it reflects real world issues. Officer Rimmer, the fourth episode of Red Dwarf’s eleventh series, is a prime example of this, tackling the matter of 3D printing as the Starbug crew encounter a ship with bio-printing technology. It’s another example of writer-director Doug Naylor striving to stay current and tell stories that could only be told in 2016.
Easily the best riff on the 3D printing concept comes very early in the episode, as a ‘paper’ jam causes the captain of the other ship to come out wrong,...

Note: This is our spoiler-filled review of episode 3 of Red Dwarf XI, currently available on the UKTV Play app. It aired on Dave at 9pm on Thursday the 6th of October.
As we noted a few weeks ago, Red Dwarf has undergone a lot of changes over its 18-year history, at each stage picking up new fans who are attracted to the show in one particular format. This, combined with the highly subjective nature of comedy, means that it’s impossible for Red Dwarf XI to please everybody all the time. Twentica and Samsara, both of which we thought were fantastic episodes, have attracted everything from wild enthusiasm to hard-boiled pessimism - and nobody seems to be able to agree on which one was better.

Samsara simultaneously harks back to classic Red Dwarf while trying something new, resulting in some outstanding comedy moments...
This review contains spoilers.
11.2 Samsara
The television landscape has changed a lot since Red Dwarf made its debut back in 1988. One of the more interesting developments of the 21st century has been that, thanks in no small part to shows like Lost, non-linear storytelling is now as much a part of the language of television as the cliff-hanger or the third-act twist. In a series that has, with rare exceptions, always featured at least one of its regulars in any given scene, Samsara breaks with Red Dwarf convention in a major way.
The Epg description for Samsara will tell you that it’s a story in which the crew find an escape pod which leads them to a crashed space ship (the titular Samsara), and the Cat and...

11.1 Twentica
The history of Red Dwarf is a series of jarring transitions, with the series evolving over the years to fit in with its surroundings (and, of course, its budget). The sprawling sci-fi of Red Dwarf V was different to the claustrophobia of Red Dwarf VI and VII, which underwent a massive transformation into the populated world and broader humour of Red Dwarf VIII, at which point the show went off air until the super low-budget real-world antics of Back to Earth… You get the idea.
The shift from Red Dwarf X to Red Dwarf XI echoes the biggest (and still the most divisive) of these regenerations - that of Red Dwarf II to Red Dwarf III. When Red Dwarf X...

We're Doomed: The Dad's Army Story is touching, humorous and ultimately heartwarming piece of television...
New Dad’s Army casts are like buses: you wait ages for one to come along, and then when two turn up at once they don’t like it up ‘em. While it’s never been far from the public consciousness, the sitcom about the Home Guard of Walmington-on-Sea seems to have experienced a surge in popularity over the last few years, with repeats on BBC Two having become a Saturday night staple - only a few weeks ago, it was the programme with the highest Appreciation Index for the whole of a Saturday which included Strictly, The X Factor, I’m A Celeb and the Doctor Who finale. And with the new Dad’s Army film starring Toby Jones and Bill Nighy set for release in February, it’s the perfect...

Brian Blessed and Richard Ayoade join the cast of Danger Mouse for its new Christmas Special, a festive classic in the making...
When we reviewed the pilot for the revived Danger Mouse back in September, it seemed like a promising start to the new series, albeit not one without issues: it was a bit too self-aware and the voices would take some getting used to. Fifteen episodes later, the team are unleashing Danger Mouse’s first-ever Christmas special upon the world, and we’re pleased to report that it’s set to go down in the grand pantheon of TV Christmas specials as a classic.
Running at twice the length of a regular episode, The Snowman Cometh features guest star Richard Ayoade as the titular Snowman, one of Danger Mouse’s least fearsome nemeses, whose initial attack on London is met with derision from rodent superspies and members of the public alike.

Our hunt for overlooked Christmas films? Well, we thought it was a Home Alone film we didn't know about. Turned out it wasn't...
I was wary the moment I opened the package from Den of Geek and saw the words Home And Alone For Christmas staring back at me. I’m a big fan of the original Home Alone films, the ones starring Macaulay Culkin, but it’s a franchise that took a heck of a nosedive after he left, with a series of increasingly obnoxious-looking child actors being asked to recreate Culkin’s head-in-hands pose for the DVD box. So if Home Alone 5: The Holiday Heist was bad, how bad was the film piggybacking on the franchise’s success going to be?
Despite promising some festive magic with its doesn’t-quite-work tagline ‘When all elf breaks loose’, Home And Alone For Christmas (original title 3 Day Test,...

This article contains spoilers for Doctor Who series 9.
Series 9 of Doctor Who (or Season 35, if you’re our favourite kind of pedant) may still be warm in the ground, but fans being fans we’re inevitably already wondering what’s next. We’ve got a festive trifle at Christmas, of course, with The Husbands Of River Song reuniting the Doctor with everyone’s second-favourite Whoniverse archaeologist, but what then? Here’s some of the possible directions we think Series 10 may take…

Bill Murray festive special, A Very Murray Christmas, is available on Netflix now. Here's what we made of the musical variety show...
Bill Murray has become something of an enigmatic figure in recent years; he has a freephone number instead of an agent, is notorious for crashing private parties, and is inextricably linked with the phrase ‘No-one will ever believe you’. It’s perhaps appropriate, then, that the best word to sum up the actor’s new Netflix special A Very Murray Christmas would be ‘bizarre’.
One part comedy, two parts musical special, A Very Murray Christmas begins with the story of a doomed live holiday special, whose special guests have all had to pull out due to the dreadful weather. Despite his reservations, Murray is contractually obliged to go ahead with the performance. However, when further disaster strikes, he winds up spending his Christmas Eve...

Turn down your lights (where applicable) - Mystery Science Theater 3000 is making a comeback. The Us series poking fun at bad movies from the comfort of a satellite several miles above the Earth ran for eleven years from 1988-1999, and creator Joel Hodgson has been raising funds to resume the experiment via Kickstarter. As we write this, three new episodes have been funded, and a batch of six looks likely. However, Hodgson is hoping to reach $5.5 million and fund a full series of 12 new episodes, so if you...

Our viewing notes and geeky spots for Doctor Who series 9: The Zygon Inversion...
We’re now eight episodes into this series of Doctor Who, and after tonight you can’t complain that they’re not giving Peter Capaldi enough to do. In an episode unlike any we’ve had before, there didn’t seem to be much room for references, allusions and other such things; the ones we did spot are listed below. Did we get them all, or were we too caught up in Mr Capaldi’s eyebrows to notice some? Let us know in the comments!
Five References Rapid
This isn’t the first time aliens have posed as policemen; in 1971’s Terror Of The Autons, a memorable sequence saw the third Doctor pull off a policeman’s face to reveal a blank plastic dummy underneath. The sequence drew a number of complaints -...

Unit, shape-shifters and the Doctor cosplay. Here are the geeky bits and pieces we spotted in Doctor Who's The Zygon Invasion...
For at least the third time this series, one or all of the characters you care about on this show are dead. So what better way to celebrate than to read through our weekly list of callbacks, allusions, shared themes and generally interesting (if tenuous) nonsense? As ever, feel free to leave your own contributions in the comments below!
The Old-Who Invasion
This is the third appearance of the Zygons in Doctor Who; they first menaced the fourth Doctor in 1975’s Terror Of The Zygons, a story which revealed the Loch Ness Monster to be one of the Skarasen, a race from the Zygon homeworld. Unit also featured in that tale, with Kate’s father Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart revealing his Scots heritage in a fetching kilt.

Jokers, circus masters and demonic dolls. Which TV characters terrify you? Den Of Geek asked its writers that very question…
The subconscious is a terrible place; dark, mysterious and peopled by spectres from the past. As a bit of a laugh then, we sent our writers journeying into theirs and asked them to drag out any TV terrors they found lurking in the shadows.
Some television fears had been ensconced there since childhood, others were more recent tenants. Some were morally terrifying; human beings with icy hearts capable of atrocities, others were simply… atrocities.
Join us as we count down in order of terror from the sort-of-creepy to the downright terrifying, the 50 TV characters that, for whatever reason, give our writers chills. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, so feel free to fill in gaps by adding your own peculiar television nightmares below…

Highwaymen, cat people and Winston Churchill. Here are the geeky bits and pieces we noted in Doctor Who's The Woman Who Lived...
The Woman Who Lived is a fascinating episode of Doctor Who, filled with philosophical discussions and ruminations on the nature of immortality. In truth, on first viewing we weren’t sure there’d be very much to write about in this column this week. However, as a great man once said, ‘life finds a way’. So here are all of the callbacks, similarities and tenuous-but-interesting geeky things we spotted in this week’s episode. If we’ve missed any, make your way to the all-important comments section below!
Your References Or Your Life
Ashildr isn’t the first highwayman to team up with the Doctor; 1982’s The Visitation saw the Doctor and his companions befriend highwayman Richard Mace. Together they thwarted the reptilian Terileptils,...

Eye-patches, a yo-yo, Game Of Thrones and Benny Hill. Here are the geeky bits and pieces we noticed in Doctor Who's The Girl Who Died...
While Ashildr watches the centuries pass waiting until her paths cross with the Doctor again, here’s something she might want to read to the pass the time - it’s the fifth of our geekly, weekly viewing guides to the ninth series of Doctor Who, pulling together all of the references and callbacks, recurring themes and motifs, and tenuous connections that we thought were interesting enough to write about anyway.
As always, if you spot something that we haven’t, please do share it with us in the comments below - so far, you’ve proved that we have some impressively eagle-eyed readers out there! And remember - it’s just a bit of fun...

Toby Whithouse's Before The Flood tips its top hat to several references from Doctor Who and elsewhere. Here are our spots...
This article contains lots and lots of spoilers for Before The Flood.
The Doctor and his friends may have gone back to before the flood in this episode, but even the 1980s aren’t safe from echoes of the past; if anything, there’s more of them there, on account of it being the past. So here are our geeky viewing notes for this week’s episode...
Before The Revival
The Doctor seemingly opens the episode by addressing the audience. There have been a handful of occasions in the past on which the Doctor speaks straight into the camera and could possibly be talking to the viewers - Tom Baker’s glib “Even the sonic screwdriver won’t get me out of this one” in The Invasion Of Time,...

Toby Whithouse's Under The lake is packed with references, from a 7th Doctor story through to Star Trek. Here's what we spotted...
This article contains lots and lots of spoilers for Under The Lake.
Under The Lake may not be the Dalek-filled continuity fest of the last couple of weeks, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t set our geek senses tingling. Here’s everything we were able to spot, from the obvious references to the slightly tenuous connections, from this week’s episode...
Ghosts From The Past
Under The Lake is a perfect example of what’s commonly referred to as a ‘base under siege’ story. These were a staple of the classic series, particularly during the Patrick Troughton era, not least because they meant the ever-stretched production team could save on the set budget. The first proper base-under-siege tale was William Hartnell’s final story, The Tenth Planet,...

Danger Mouse is back! This slick, self-aware, modern revival boasts plenty of action and jokes...
It’s been over a year since the BBC announced it was remaking Danger Mouse, a show which has a special place in the hearts of a generation of children. Understandably, there’ve been nerves; can Danger Mouse thrive without David Jason and Terry Scott? Will the new team stick with what made the show great in the first place? Is there a place for Danger Mouse on television today? Will this ruin childhoods?
Based on the first episode of the revived series, the answer to all of those questions is tentatively ‘yes’. Except that last one; as we’ve said before on this site, even the worst remake can’t have any genuine impact on your childhood. And, happily, Danger Mouse is far from being the worst remake.
Fans of the old show will...

Spoilers! Here are our ultra-nerdy viewing notes and geeky spots from Doctor Who series 9's The Witch's Familiar...
The Witch’s Familiar may have been less frantic than The Magician’s Apprentice, but it contained just as many back-references and kisses to the past - in addition to the ones documented in last week’s article. So here are all the geeky things we were able to notice in this week’s episode…
As ever, let us know in the comments if we missed any. The article starts once you scroll past Daphne The Spoiler Squirrel...
Callbacks of the Daleks
This isn’t the first time the Doctor has wielded a Dalek gunstick. Having narrated every Dalek story to date for Davros in 1975’s Genesis Of The Daleks, the fourth Doctor then destroys the recording using a Dalek gun. Dalek gunsticks were also wielded by the Dalek-humans in David Tennant Story Evolution Of The Daleks.

Spoilers: here are our viewing notes for Doctor Who series 9 episode 1, The Magician's Apprentice. There's a lot to spot...
When a show has over 50 years of history, it can sometimes be hard to keep up with all the continuity, callbacks and generally geeky references. Which is why, for series 9 (or series 35), we're trying this extra weekly feature of, effectively, viewing notes.
Which is fortunate because, as you might expect, The Magician’s Apprentice contained more than its fair share of these. Here are the ones we found; if you noticed something we haven’t, feel free to add it in the comments!
This is a very spoiler-heavy article. Thus, we've deployed our spoiler squirrel - Daphne - to stop your eyes accidentally drifting to the text of the article if you want to be spoiler-free. Scroll below Daphne at your peril...

On a June set-visit to the Cardiff studios, we chatted to Doctor Who's Ingrid Oliver about Osgood, the Zygons and series 9...
One of the most pleasant surprises in the run-up to the new series of Doctor Who has been the news that Ingrid Oliver will be returning as fan favourite Osgood. Details of her return are still tightly under wraps, but back in June we snuck onto set with a handful of other journalists to speak to Ingrid about returning from the dead, future costume choices and much more...
So we thought you were dead…
So did I! So did I… Or am I?
Had you worked out that there might be a return on the cards for Osgood?
No, because I really wanted to come back, and you always hope you will come back, but I read an interview Steven Moffat had given saying ‘No, she’s definitely...
