- Restored ships for the National Park Service at the National Maritime Museum at Aquatic Park in California. He also made a documentary about San Francisco's old hay-scow schooners that is still shown regularly at the National Maritime Museum.
- At the time Doug became ill, he was two-thirds of the way through the production of a film about the history of ferryboats on San Francisco Bay.
- Worked as a US Park Ranger at Alcatraz during the making of Forbidden Letters. He got a section of the park cordoned off so the director could shoot a sexually explicit scene without being interrupted by tourists.
