As an actress, writer and director, Alice Lowe has never much cared if you like the characters she’s penned for herself. From the tourist who develops a taste for murder on her road trip with her boyfriend in Ben Wheatley’s “Sightseers” to a mother-to-be whose baby inspires far more violence than just kicking around in her belly in her own directorial debut, “Prevenge,” Lowe has sacrificed audience approval for the license to explore darker corners of the female experience. However, that might make Agnes the most deliciously miserable of her creations, as someone in desperate need of love, commencing a grimly amusing search for the perfect partner across centuries in “Timestalker.”
If comedy is tragedy plus time, there is plenty of it in Lowe’s latest film. Starting in Scotland in the late 1600s, Agnes can’t escape her attraction to the wrong guy (Aneurin Barnard) and is...

English novelist E.M. Forster never married, and why would he? The author of “Maurice” and “Howards End” was gay, reportedly maintaining relations with a much-younger police officer over the span of four decades. That man did marry, and history has it that his wife knew their secret. In “My Policeman,” this unconventional arrangement lends itself quite nicely to one of those slightly stuffy yet respectable period pieces of the kind that Ismail Merchant and James Ivory have made of Forster’s novels, jumping back and forth in time between the sexy stuff and the maudlin way it resolves itself so many years later.
It all starts with a special delivery to a dreary seaside cottage: An invalid arrives at the house of retired policeman Tom (Linus Roache) and his schoolteacher wife Marion (Gina McKee). It was her idea to take in the unpleasant and largely uncooperative Patrick Hazelwood, whose presence clearly annoys her husband.

Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe and Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You dominated the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Monday.
Small Axe clinched five wins, the most on a night that celebrated behind-the-scenes craftspeople, but it was I May Destroy You that secured two of the biggest gongs for Coel: Director: Diction, and Writer: Drama. The BBC/HBO series was also victorious in the Editing: Fiction category.
Coel, who beat McQueen in the directing category alongside co-director Sam Miller, accepted her writing win. “I would like to thank every draft. There are hundreds of them, each living only briefly and sacrificing themselves so the version we watched that won this BAFTA could exist,” she said.
BBC/Amazon series Small Axe’s prizes included JoJo Williams for Make Up & Hair Design; Jacqueline Durran for Costume Design; Helen Scott for Production Design; Shabier Kirchner for Photography & Lighting: Fiction; and Gary Davy for Scripted Casting.

For the anthology series “Small Axe,” Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen sought to rectify the historical erasure of the Black experience on British television.
“We’re missing two generations or so of Black artists in the UK because that industry was not welcoming to Black people,” McQueen said in an interview with Indiewire last year. “There’s a hole in our narrative. These stories shaped the history of the UK. So it’s no small feat in what the West Indian population has done in the UK and the Black population has done in the UK.”
The five individual films that combine to make “Small Axe,” all of which debuted on Amazon last fall, focus on the lives of West Indian immigrants living in London from the 1960s through the 1980s. To create the standalone movies, McQueen enlisted a group of highly decorated below-the-line collaborators, including Oscar winners like editor Chris Dickens...

The Oscars are more international than ever. Of the 11 foreign-language films nominated for Best Picture in 90 years, more than half were nominated post-2000. The motion picture academy has expanded its membership by almost 20 percent, focusing squarely on filmmakers outside the US and people of color.
Last year for example, before the world turned upside down amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and social upheaval, we saw some of that progress come to fruition when underdog Korean masterpiece “Parasite” upended awards prognosticators’ expectations by steamrolling its way through various guild award wins before ultimately triumphing on Oscar night. It vindicated the motion picture academy’s efforts towards moving away from the 2016 #OscarsSoWhite controversy when all 20 of the Oscar acting nominees were exclusively white.
The academy continued its push for exclusivity in June by inviting 819 film professionals to join its ranks and changing eligibility rules to ensure films ticked a number of boxes around diversity and inclusivity.

The Chicago Film Critics Association has named Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” as this year’s big winner, netting five prizes, including best picture, director, actress (Frances McDormand), adapted screenplay and cinematography. Leading the Cfca nominations with seven, the Searchlight Pictures drama has performed astoundingly with the half dozen critics awards that have been announced thus far. Zhao is currently 6/6 for critics wins.
With two awards, Focus Features’ “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” walked away with best original screenplay for writer Eliza Hittman and most promising performer for Sidney Flanigan.
The rest of the honorees won a single mention for their respective films. Chadwick Boseman won best actor for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” while Paul Raci netted another trophy for “Sound of Metal.” Maria Bakalova’s work in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” was also rewarded, marking her third win this season thus far.

“You can’t look forward without looking back.” That’s a valuable piece of advice given to the protagonist of “Alex Wheatle,” but it’s also a summation of what director and co-writer Steve McQueen is doing with his extraordinary “Small Axe” series.
With its vivid portrayals of the horrors of institutionalization, “Alex Wheatle” is perhaps most reminiscent — so far — of the McQueen audiences have come to know in films like “Hunger” and “12 Years a Slave.” But even as its lead character endures physical and psychological torment at the hands of authorities, the film is very much of a piece with the ebullience of “Small Axe,” as the ongoing themes of community, music and defiance play a huge role in the story.
The real-life Wheatle published his first novel in 1999, but the film begins in 1981, with Alex going to prison for his role in the Brixton Riots, in which...

“Never count out an oppressed population” and “never count out a played-out genre” are just two of the notions that stayed with me after watching “Mangrove,” one of a five-part series of period films by Steve McQueen about London’s West Indian community.
It’s a movie about a real-life injustice followed by a courtroom drama, and if a long history of hacky biopics and feel-good activist cinema made you think this kind of story was beyond telling on film with power or efficacy, McQueen proves that there’s still a way to do it right. The tale of the Mangrove Nine was relevant in the late 1960s and early 1970s when it actually happened, it was relevant when McQueen and Alastair Siddons (“Tomb Raider” 2018) sat down to write about it, and it’s relevant today, tomorrow, and in the future, as unchecked police brutality continues to rain down on communities of color.

Endings are so important and how the viewer leaves the cinema is crucial. For editor Chris Dickens, finding the perfect ending for “Rocketman” was paramount, but it was also a challenge. Elton John’s hit “I’m Still Standing” was going to end the film with the original idea of going to Cannes to recreate the video for the movie. However, the shooting schedule didn’t allow for the planned ending.
It was back to the drawing board for ideas until they perfected the scene.
Editing “I’m Still Standing”
There’s a little complicated story to that sequence. The end of the film was always written more or less as it’s played in the film. But, we had this idea where Elton was reunited with his younger self as a child in rehab. They embrace and hug.
In the scene, he hugs his younger self, he feels better...

Mary Queen of Scots, directed by Josie Rourke, is a remake/retelling of the 1971 film of the same name Mary, Queen of Scots directed by Charles Jarrott. Rourke’s film stars two heavyweight leading actress titans of their craft in Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, as opposing queens Mary Stuart and Queen Elizabeth I battling out for the reign. This twenty-nineteen rendition is a highly intense scorcher of deliberating venomous proposal and political promise. Wrapped in a deeply controversial and disputed historical subject matter with questionable accuracy that thankfully doesn’t derail an otherwise immersive film.

Is 2018 an anomaly, or is it a harbinger of things to come?
The awards derbies of recent years have seen a predominance of indie films at the expense of big studio features — resulting in a slate of Oscar contenders devoid not only of genuine blockbusters but also of more modest mid-budget crowd-pleasers. This has dampened the ratings of the Oscars telecast, much to the consternation of the Academy.
But this year feels different, with studio pics including “Black Panther,” “First Man” (pictured above) and “A Star Is Born” definitely in the running.
And along with this rise in the fortunes of studio pictures, many artisans who have worked on them — from cinematographers to costume designers to visual-effects supervisors — are seeing their projects attain a new level of acclaim and respect.
But before the distribution of the top prizes Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre, these artisans will have to run the...

Focus Features announced Wednesday that it is giving Josie Rourke’s Elizabethan biopic “Mary Queen of Scots” a December 7 release, right in the middle of awards season.
The film stars two of this year’s Best Actress Oscar nominees, Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, who will respectively play Mary Stuart and her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. It follows Mary after her husband, the French monarch Francis II, dies when she is 18. Defying demands that she remarry, she returns to her native Scotland to become Queen there, only to find that it has fallen under Elizabeth’s rule. In a world dominated by men, the two cousins vie for control of England’s throne, setting off a chain reaction of rebellion and conspiracy.

It’s fortuitous enough that Edgar Wright‘s films will inspire any number of questions — fairly often along the lines of “how did they even do that?,” admittedly, but one takes what they can get — and all the more fortunate that the writer-director stands among the more verbose and open of his generation. (And that’s to say nothing of those working in the mainstream.) With the latest, Baby Driver, being a praise-worthy bit of craftsmanship from top to bottom and the man himself standing in something of a spotlight, now might be the best time to get his attention.
Although I could’ve thrown inquiry after inquiry at Wright for, say, two hours, our talk was a good bit of ground-covering — an update on how feeling about the progression of his career, where one film feeds into another, and, because it’d be silly to sit down with a...

While it seems likely we’ll never fully know what happened on the set of the still-untitled Han Solo “Star Wars” spinoff feature, the first of what seems to be an inevitable stream of new reports has revealed a mess of new information. And what a mess it is.
Over at The Hollywood Reporter, Kim Masters weighs in on the kerfuffle, detailing a divided production hindered by a series of philosophical disconnects and differences that apparently could not be overcome by either recently fired directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller or Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy.

The adventure-filled past of the iconic scoundrel and everyone’s favorite Wookiee is going before cameras this month when principal photography on the untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story officially began February 20th at Pinewood Studios, London.
The movie will explore the duo’s adventures before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, including their early encounters with that other card-playing rogue from a galaxy far, far away, Lando Calrissian.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directors co-piloting the movie, with a cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca.
“Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous,” Lord and Miller said.

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) handed out the 2013 Eddie Awards last night and the race didn't change too much, that is unless you were confused as to who the two primary front-runners heading into next Sunday's Oscars were. Argo (edited by William Goldenberg, A.C.E.) and Silver Linings Playbook (edited by Jay Cassidy, A.C.E. and Crispin Struthers) won Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) and Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy/Musical) respectively. Brave won in the Animated category while presumptive Best Documentary winner, Searching for Sugar Man won in the Documentary category. Of course, just to keep things interesting and ensure "Team Lincoln" didn't go home entirely empty handed, Steven Spielberg received the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honor presented to him by longtime collaborator and friend Kathleen Kennedy. I've already updated the Oscar Overture with the wins for Argo and Silver Linings as the path...

Tom Hooper's gamble of filming Les Misérables with on-set singing has resulted in a work of unusual power and colour
Asked who was France's greatest poet, André Gide responded with the famously rueful answer: "Victor Hugo, hélas!" Cameron Mackintosh, the impresario who brought Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel's Les Misérables to London and transformed it into a worldwide phenomenon after its mild Parisian success and disastrous British first-night reception, would give a rather more positive response. I was in that first-night audience on 30 September 1985, and shared the general opinion that it was an indifferent show, shallow and somewhat forced in tone. I emerged with only one song planted in my head, Master of the House, sung by Alun Armstrong as Thénardier, the outrageously opportunist innkeeper, a number that struck me as rather like You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two from Oliver!

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) announced the nominees for the 2013 Ace Eddie Awards today and among them are all five Oscar nominees, four of them -- Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty -- in the Dramatic category and the fifth, Silver Linings Playbook, in the Comedy/Musical category. There isn't really too much else to say about the noms considering in previous years these nominations came out before the Oscar nominations were announced giving reason to speculate on which of the several films would end up nominated for Oscars. Considering that's not the case this year, this will all become a little more interesting when they announce their winners on Saturday, February 16. For now, the nominees are listed below in the Dramatic, Musical or Comedy, Animated and Documentary categories. Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic): Argo - William Goldenberg, A.C.E. If the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2013 really are a sign of what we have to expect at the 85th Academy Awards, then the Oscar winners are going to be split between every deserving film and performance to be nominated this year. While "Silver Linings Playbook" won the most awards with Best Comedy Movie, Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy and Best Ensemble, all other major awards were split between "Argo," "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty."
Of course, there's no good way to judge who will win Best Director as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't nominate CCAs winner Ben Affleck for the award. It should help that the film also took home Best Picture, which bodes well for its Oscar chances. It's still a toss-up to see who will take home which awards on Feb. 24, but for now things are looking good for "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Argo,...

"Argo" F...yourself! Ben Affleck's "Argo" was the big winner at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. The film won Best Picture with Affleck, infamously snubbed by the Academy, took home the Best Director award. I say...Yay!
Voted by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I'm a proud member, the Critics' Choice Movie Awards have been regarded as a better Oscar predictor than the Golden Globes. Heck, we even give talented directors their well-deserved praise! Ha!

- The Scorecard Review
There are a lot of kids’ tables at the Critics’ Choice Film Awards.
By that, I mean there is literally a children’s category among the contenders — best young actor/actress — which separates Quvenzhané Wallis of Beasts of the Southern Wild, who is also nominated in the overall lead actress category, from her adult peers.
And there are also separate “kids’ table”-type groups for not only comedies (which the Golden Globes does, too) but action and sci-fi/horror movies, which isolates those projects and actors from contention in the traditional, non-genre categories. The group also includes a “best ensemble...

2013 Critics' Choice Awards Nominations are Topped by Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln' in Record Fashion
The Broadcast Film Critics Association (of which I am a member) announced their nominations for the 2013 Critics' Choice Awards this morning, which was led by Steven Spielberg's Lincoln bringing in a record 13 nominations including a nomination for Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay (Tony Kushner), Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), Supporting Actress (Sally Field), Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones), Ensemble, Cinematography, Art Direction, Editing, Makeup and Score (John Williams). The previous record for nominations was set by Black Swan with ten in 2010, a record that was also broken by Les Miserables with 11. Miserables was also nominated for Best Picture alongside Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, The Master, Moonrise Kingdom, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty. Just below is the complete list of nominees, which Laremy (a fellow Bfca member) and I will be discussing on today's podcast along with our nominations to see how they matched up.

Les Miserables is the longest running musical in West End history and was the recipient of eight Tony Awards in 1987. Tom Hooper was the darling of the 2011 Academy Awards with his debut feature The King’s Speech garnering four Oscar statuettes. So, on paper Les Miserables should be a no brainer.
It’s got great pedigree, a huge fanbase, a set of cast iron guaranteed wins on its song sheet. How could it possibly go wrong? Well, that question still stands without reply. This new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s huge door-stopper novel is as glorious as anything we could have expected.
Tom Hooper’s latest film is most definitely not lacking in scope. From the off we are landed in a biblically huge shipyard, witness to thousands of slaves working under the keen observation of the villain of the piece, Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). Toiling away far under him we soon find our hero,...
