The year 1990 was a pretty decent time for a trip to the movies, especially if you’re a self confessed gore-hound, like yours truly. There’s nothing better than sitting down in a packed movie theater, or even at home with the pet cat or a similarly cherished human, to watch some carnage on the screen. Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead was a fun remake of the 1968 classic, while we also got the likes of It, Tremors, Child’s Play 2, Gremlins 2, Predator 2 (there’s a theme forming here…) Killer Crocodile 2. Ok, maybe not that last one. Also, if you’re a fan of Stephen King adaptations, the year also brought the ankle smashing Misery with Cathy Bates in full on psycho mode, plus the outlandishly bad, in a good way, Frankenhooker, replete with all of its soft-core pornography and grisly images. Which brings us...

In 2006, a movie came out starring Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Toby Jones. That’s a murderer’s row of talent bringing to life writer/director Douglas McGrath’s script — and very few people paid it much mind. But “Infamous” was a victim of bad timing, not bad filmmaking.
One can’t blame audiences for greeting it with a collective shrug. McGrath’s movie tackled the exact same topic as the previous year’s “Capote” (the movie that earned Philip Seymour Hoffman his first and only Oscar): Truman Capote’s time spent researching and writing his true-crime classic “In Cold Blood.” After the buzzy release of “Capote” and months spent in awards season campaigning mode, no one was ready to revisit the subject.
What a shame, because “Infamous” restores much of what was missing from Bennett Miller...

Plot: Acclaimed writer Truman Capote surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society New York – whom he nicknamed “the swans.” Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society he so loved and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

After appearing in the majority of “Succession” episodes, Hiam Abbass is finally an Emmy nominee. The actress recurred in all four seasons of the HBO series as Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) wife Marcia, even as their relationship was rocked by Logan’s affairs with Rhea Jarrell — who could forget Abbass’s shakedown of Holly Hunter? — and others. Abbass returned for two episodes of the final season, for which she nabbed a bid for Best Drama Guest Actress. Could she prevail on her very first try?
To do so, Abbass will have to best a formidable group of contenders, including two others from her own show. Cherry Jones reprised her Emmy-winning character Nan Pierce from the second season of “Succession” in the fourth season premiere and earned her fifth career bid, while Harriet Walter has earned her third nomination for “Succession,” and fifth overall, as Logan’s former wife and...

The legal drama “Your Honor,” which has captivated audiences with its intense narrative and Bryan Cranston‘s compelling performance, stands at a crossroads after its second season. While the show was initially conceived as a limited series, the possibility of a “Your Honor” season 3 has been a topic of much speculation, especially considering Cranston’s recent comments.
Cranston’s Clarification and Showtime’s Interest

The Queens-based MoMI is curating a special Payne retrospective, culminating in a screening of “The Holdovers” with Payne in attendance on January 10. The exhibit kicks off January 5 with Payne’s feature debut “Citizen Ruth,” which was released in 1996. The independent dark comedy stars Laura Dern as a pregnant woman being used on opposing ends of the abortion debate.
“Alexander Payne has always put this country’s cultural, political, and emotional realities under a microscope — while never forgetting to also make viewers laugh,” the official MoMI press statement reads. “This rare talent, coupled with an enormous skill directing actors, many of whom give career performances under his watchful eye, has carried him through all his films, psychologically acute and often poignant inquiries into the lives of taciturn American...

Emma Thompson has turned in a host of eclectic, effective, excellent performances throughout her illustrious career. She started out with period dramas such as “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” before later moving into fantasy with roles in “Nanny McPhee” and “Harry Potter.” Add to that top-tier performances in the likes of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Cruella,” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” and you’ve got one hell of a performer.
However, Thompson has stated herself that the role she gets the most praise for is actually… “Love Actually.” The classic Richard Curtis Christmas movie, which turns 20 this year, tells the interconnected love stories of eight different sets of people with Thompson delivering the most emotional and heartbreaking storyline of all of them. Thompson’s Karen is an under-appreciated stay-at-home mother who spends her days looking after the kids, making costumes for their school nativity,...

Emilia Jones (Coda) and Nicholas Braun (Succession) co-star in Cat Person, a sharply written thriller that explores the minefield of dating in the modern era. Based on the New Yorker short story by Kristen Roupenian, it’s by turns chilling, suspenseful and provocative.
Directed by Susanna Fogel, Cat Person centres on 20-year-old Margot (Jones) a second-year student who also holds down a concession stand job at her local cinema. That’s where she meets Robert (Braun), a tall, bearded older man who takes her number after a bit of cross-counter flirtation.

Susanna Fogel on her chilling and perceptive Cat Person, starring Emilia Jones and Nicholas Braun: “There’s a little bit of a fairy tale, Into the Woods theme that runs through …”
Based on the widely discussed New Yorker short story by Kristen Roupenian, adapted for the screen by Michelle Ashford, Susanna Fogel’s chilling and perceptive Cat Person stars Emilia Jones, Nicholas Braun, Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis and Isabella Rossellini and expands on the interior and exterior dating-life of college student Margot (Jones). “Listen, Concession Stand Girl, why don’t you give me your number?” says Robert (Braun), who frequents the cinema where Margot works.
Susanna Fogel with Anne-Katrin Titze on the fantastic sound design by Columbia classmate Eric Hirsch: “His father is the editor of Star Wars, the original editor, Paul Hirsch, George Lucas’s editor.”
We see at the start: “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them.

Cat Person was previously reviewed at Sundance 2023.
Plot: A college student (Emilia Jones) becomes infatuated with an older man (Nicholas Braun) who frequents the theater she works at.
Review: For those not in the know, Cat Person is based on a New Yorker article that went viral a few years ago. It described, in excruciating detail, the relationship between a 20-year-old college girl and a thirty-something man she had a brief relationship with. The film, adapted by writer Michelle Ashford of Masters of Sex and director Susanna Fogel, embellishes the already fictional story with a third-act twist, but do a good job translating the story to film. The result is a fresh, uncomfortable and often legitimately funny take on a provocative subject.
Power dynamics in relationships are discussed now more than they used to be, even compared to when the article was published in 2017. Nowadays, everyone would look askew at...

Emilia Jones (Coda) and Nicholas Braun (Succession) do not appear to be a match made in heaven in the first trailer for Cat Person.
Set for release Oct. 6 from Rialto Pictures, director Susanna Fogel’s feature premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival and is adapted from author Kristen Roupenian’s viral New Yorker short story of the same name. Cat Person offers a look at contemporary dating by focusing on college student Margot (Jones), who has a fling with an older man named Robert (Braun) but soon gets suspicious about him.
After Margot expresses regrets about her time spent with Robert — who had previously described himself as a cat person — her friend Taylor (Geraldine Viswanathan) asks if at least his pet felines were cute. “I never saw them,” Margot replies ominously as she begins to doubt how honest he’s been.
Later in the trailer, Margot concludes nonchalantly,...

“Cat Person,” an adaptation of Kristen Roupenian’s insanely popular (and equally controversial) 2017 New Yorker short story, has just debuted the first official trailer ahead of its October launch from Rialto Pictures and StudioCanal. You can watch it above and get totally creeped out.
In “Cat Person,” Emilia Jones (“Coda”) plays Margot, who starts to date an older man (“Succession” star Nicholas Braun) before discovering something much more sinister lurking beneath the surface. Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis, Michael Gandolfini, Liza Koshy, Fred Melamed, Isaac Cole Powell and Isabella Rossellini also star in the thriller.
“Cat Person” was written by Michelle Ashford and directed by Susanna Fogel, who cowrote “Booksmart” and directed “The Spy Who Dumped Me” along with episodes of “Amazing Stories,” “The Flight Attendant,” “Utopia” (where she worked with Jones) and “A Small Light.”

After world premiering to much buzz at Sundance back in January, the darkly comedic dating thriller Cat Person has finally unveiled a first trailer and release date, having been set to open in U.S. theaters via Rialto Pictures beginning October 6th.
An adaptation of Kristen Roupenian’s viral New Yorker short story fully financed by Studiocanal, Cat Person looks at the brief relationship between 20-year-old college sophomore Margot (Coda‘s Emilia Jones) and the somewhat-older Robert (Succession‘s Nicholas Braun) from the perspective of both characters, as a means of commenting on the experience of dating today.
In an appearance alongside her leads at Deadline’s Sundance studio earlier this year, pic’s DGA Award-winning director Susanna Fogel noted that the idea of toggling back and forth between the POVs of her protagonists was compelling, in that it allowed her to explore “miscommunications and the cultural baggage that men and women bring into dating,...

Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" will be available to stream very soon. The director, known for quirky comedies starring an endless rotation of his A-list actor friends, from Bill Murray to Tilda Swinton ("Moonrise Kingdom"), debuted his latest film in theaters in June. Now, audiences will be able to enjoy it from the comfort of their homes.
The full trailer for "Astroid City" dropped back on March 29, revealing the period comedy that takes place in a 1950s desert town about to be rocked by an otherworldly event that could change everything. The movie preview offered clues about the film's characters, with Scarlett Johansson taking on the role of a '50s-era movie star and Tom Hanks serving as the disapproving father of Jason Schwartzman's character's late wife (who dies three weeks before the movie starts). Wes Anderson’s latest film, Asteroid City, is now available to rent or buy on digital platforms, after just three weeks in theaters. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, is a metafictional comedy-drama set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1950s, where a TV host introduces a televised production of a play by famed playwright Conrad Earp (Edward Norton), depicting the events of a Junior Stargazer convention in a desert town.
The film features an ensemble cast that includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan and Jeff Goldblum. Wes Anderson has always managed to conjure up so much joy and wonder in his films, from his early days to his most recent work. There’s always an element of childish imagination and wonder to his films that always helps you fall in love with the characters and the worlds. Beneath that style, however, has always been a maturity to his storytelling, a sense of heartache and subtle sadness that lingers through the colourful worlds. Asteroid City is like so much of Anderson’s previous work, it has the joy and wonder, it has the wonderful colour pallet and style we’ve come to expect and perhaps has deeper meanings and messages than in any of his previous work.

The film plays out on two levels … as a regular movie narrative and a stage play that is in essence the “back stage” to the main story. It’s 1955, and a group of science award teenagers and their parents gather in the desert town Asteroid City, to both be awarded their honors and to gaze at the solar system at the edge of the town’s asteroid crater. Asteroid City, the latest quirky opus from Wes Anderson, tells the story of a very small town in the middle of nowhere that becomes the epicenter of some rather unusual events. As is often the case with an Anderson film, Asteroid City is unpredictable, frequently absurd, and brimming with amusingly odd characters portrayed by an impressive roster of recognizable faces.
We were lucky enough to be invited to the Asteroid City junket in NY to talk with some of those recognizable faces, who help steer us through the peculiar particulars of Anderson’s latest:
Longtime collaborator Jason Schwartzman plays troubled war photographer Augie Steenbeck, who has arrived in “Asteroid City” to support his genius son during a Junior Stargazer convention. Scarlett Johansson plays Midge Campbell, a famous actress who takes preparing for her work very seriously. We spoke to the two about working with Wes, as well as each other.

Focus Features’ press conference for Asteroid City began with writer/director Wes Anderson describing the inspiration for his most recent weirdly wonderful film. Asteroid City is one of the most Wes Anderson-ish of all Wes Anderson films, ranking right up there with The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom, and Anderson admitted that no one has specifically asked him where the idea came from.
Joining 10 of his film’s stars – Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody, Rupert Friend, Stephen Park, Hope Davis, Bryan Cranston, and Maya Hawke – for the virtual conference, Anderson revealed that he normally starts writing a script with a couple of ideas.
”I would say this one the three ideas were, one, Roman Coppola and I created this thing together. We wanted to write a part for Jason Schwartzman at the center of a movie that would be something he hadn’t done before.

In 2022 “Succession” made history by earning 14 acting nominations at the Emmys. That’s the most any show has ever received in a single year. That number was especially remarkable as it came from 16 acting submissions on the Emmy ballot, meaning only two submitted performers failed to make the cut (supporting actor Alan Ruck and guest actor Justin Kirk). In 2023 the show has submitted more actors for consideration (19). So will the show break its own record by earning 15 or more acting noms?

The internet of 2023 has transformed Wes Anderson from director to design aesthetic through countless generative AI videos and an enduring TikTok trend mimicking his distinct visual style. To watch Anderson’s actual output in Asteroid City is to realize that boiling him down into snackable social media content cannot fully capture his magic. From the whimsical wonder and meticulous mise-en-scène, there’s no replacement for the real thing.
Asteroid City depicts a theater company staging a teleplay at a 1955 Junior Stargazer convention in the titular desert town. For Anderson, the premise is a springboard for crafting frames within frames, which he then proceeds to summarily collapse. The film upholds and undermines his signature all at once. Yet all these crisp compositions also need a committed cast of actors placed within them, delivering his droll dialogue with amusing affect. Most members of Anderson’s assembled troupe are playing actors who are also playing their characters,...

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are loving grandparenthood. What’s more, the pair know exactly how to get the most out of enjoying time with their grandchildren.
The happy couple walked the carpet at the premiere of Wes Anderson’s new film “Asteroid City” at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on Tuesday, and the pair addressed the joys of spending time with their grandkids.
“All you gotta do is love those little brats and they’re better than TV,” Tom said, beaming, before quickly adding, “They’re not little brats, they’re extraordinary young women.”

A dryly comedic bricolage of mid-century Americana and postwar anxieties with only the lightest dusting of plot, the 1950s-set Asteroid City finds Wes Anderson moving even closer to cultural curation and further from sustained storytelling. Still, the filmmaker’s gift for wringing laughs out of absurdity played straight is matched by few. That much is clear from the moment he drops an assortment of characters into the remote, alien-obsessed desert town of Asteroid City, whose attributes—from its proximity to an atomic testing facility to the stiff-necked soldiers milling about—provide numerous opportunities for funny weirdness.
The closest that Asteroid City has to a protagonist is Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzman), a somnolent war photographer whose wife died three weeks earlier. The man was too depressed to tell his kids about the loss until weeks later when a car breakdown strands the family in the titular city, where twin romances break...

Wes Anderson said the real reason Bill Murray was forced to drop out of the filmmaker’s latest drama, “Asteroid City,” was due to Murray contracting Covid-19 and not because of on-set misconduct allegations against the actor that surfaced last year.
Asked by Indiewire about the allegations against Murray, Anderson said, “My experience with Bill is so extensive. Bill was such a great supporter of me from the very beginning. I don’t want to speak about somebody else’s experience, but he’s really part of my family. You know, he’s my daughter’s godfather. In fact, he actually baptized her. He’s the one who splashed the water.”
Prior to “Asteroid City,” Anderson worked with Murray on every film he’s directed since his debut feature, 1996’s “Bottle Rocket.” Murray was originally supposed to play a hotel manager in “Asteroid City,” a supporting player who mostly interacts...

All good things come to an end, and for Bryan Cranston, the end of his acting career could arrive by 2026. Speaking to British GQ about the future, Cranston says he plans to retire from acting (for a limited time) and move to France in the coming years.
“I want to have that experience. I want to go for day trips and have the fire in the fireplace and drink wine with new friends and not read scripts,” Cranston explains. “It’s not going to be like, ‘Oh, I’ll read and see what I’m going to do.’ No, it’s a pause. It’s a stop.”
Cranston says he plans to shut down his production company, Moonshot Entertainment, and pause his acting career for at least six months. He’s nearing 70 and wants to enjoy life without Hollywood looming over his shoulder.
