- Was the "voice" of NBC television network for many years. Also the voice on RCA TV commercials and the voice-over for Keebler cookies. Also the voice on the "Super Friends" animated series, Budweiser and Raid commercials but probably best known as Starkist Tuna's "Sorry Charlie" voice-over.
- Died the same year as fellow Superman actor Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando, who played Superman's biological father Jor-El, in the first Superman (1978) film.
- As the voice of Superman on the "Super Friends" animated series, he was one of two actors who voiced a character during the series' entire run (the other was Casey Kasem as Robin).
- Following his death, he was interred at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
