Though their “’80s Horror” lineup would constitute enough of a Halloween push, the Criterion Channel enter October all guns blazing. The month’s lineup also includes a 19-movie vampire series running from 1931’s Dracula (English and Spanish both) to 2014’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, the collection in-between including Herzog’s Nosferatu, Near Dark, and Let the Right One In. Last year’s “Universal Horror” collection returns, a 17-title Ishirō Honda retrospective has been set, and a few genre titles stand alone: Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The House of the Devil, and Island of Lost Souls.
Streaming premieres include restorations of Tsai Ming-liang’s Vive L’amour and Ed Lachman’s Lou Reed / John Cale concert film Songs for Drella; October’s Criterion editions are Samuel Fuller’s Forty Guns, Bill Duke’s Deep Cover, Haxan, and My Own Private Idaho. Meanwhile, Ari Aster has curated an “Adventures...

Pierre Even will produce the feature-length doc that will use archives and original footage to recall the life of Vallée, who grew as a director in Quebec before breaking out in Hollywood with a string of studio films and TV hits.

"It's the foundation of us..." eOne has released an official trailer for Big Giant Wave, a "cinematographic wave" doc film that is described as an "ode to music." Big Giant Wave illustrates our essential connection with rhythm, music, our planet, the brain, daily lives and our collective humanity. Presented by Jean-Marc Vallée. Conceived as a cinematographic wave, this documentary essay takes us from Montreal to Cremona via Sweden, Mexico and the American West Coast to meet fascinating scientists and artists who, from their various horizons, illustrate the essential link between rhythm, music, our planet, the brain, everyday life and our collective humanity. The film is premiering in competition at The International Festival of Films on Art taking place in a few weeks. This looks exquisite! I'm very much looking forward to experiencing it myself. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Marie-Julie Dallaire's doc Big Giant Wave, direct from YouTube...
