Crime shows look for a new angle, argued Berlinale Series participants on Monday.
There is no shortage of new offerings, from Berlinale Market Selects’ “Two Sides of the Abyss,” Serbia’s “The Fall” or South Africa’s “Donkerbos,” created by Nico Scheepers, to China’s melancholic, decades-spanning “Why Try to Change Me Now,” with Golden Bear winner Yinan Diao attached as executive producer.
But while there is still an appetite for traditional detective stories, producers and broadcasters are venturing out of the “damaged, middle-aged white detective slot on a Sunday night,” suggested All3Media International’s Rachel Glaister. They are also thinking about their younger audience.
“[‘The Gymnasts’] wasn’t born as a pure crime show. We were also attracted by other themes, including coming-of-age,” said Carlotta Claori of Indigo Film when discussing the series about a tournament in the Italian Alps, gone horribly wrong.

A Frankensteinian mashup of sci-fi and torture-porn horror tropes, . While there are vague pretensions toward seriousness in Sissel Dalsgaard Thomsen’s screenplay and Jens Dahl’s direction, this thriller ends up discomfitingly most reminiscent of 1970s Wip (women in prison) and Nazisploitation grindhouse fare, as well as gamy mainstream serial-killer potboilers like “Kiss the Girls.” Well-made but more than a bit ick, it’s being released to stateside digital formats by Uncork’d Entertainment on Jan. 11.
Mia (Sara Hjort Ditlevsen) is an equestrian training for the Olympics. She seems more comfortable in the company of her horse than husband Thomas (Anders Heinrichsen), though the complexities of their relationship (including apparent separate sexual peccadilloes) never get more than hinted at. In any case, such nuances soon prove irrelevant when circumstances fatefully entangle his home and work life.

Coincidences pile up in Jens Dahl's breeder, which pits corporate greed against human bodies in bluntly material manner. Mia (Sara Hjort Ditlevsen) is a savvy young woman who's suspicious about her husband Thomas' (Anders Heinrichsen) behaviour. He happens to be high up in Denmark's biggest genetics company. Nika (Eeva Putro) is a runaway from one of that company's facilities who happens to turn up on their doorstep one day, incoherent but desperate for help. Although she doesn't manage to discern Nika's story before Thomas spirits her away, Mia inevitably stats investigating the company, and Thomas finds himself in a difficult position.
Or does he? Mia and Thomas have been arguing lately. She wants to have a baby; he doesn't. In the facility, obsessive scientist Dr Ruben (Signe Egholm Olsen) is holding young women prisoner and inducing pregnancies in order to harvest the foetuses for use in her work. When Mia is.

Despite the devastating mudslides that overwhelmed the Santa Barbara, California community of Montecito last week — resulting in at least 20 deaths and the destruction of 100-plus homes — the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff) will go on as usual. A reason to celebrate is “needed now more than ever,” wrote Sbiff director Roger Durling in a letter soon to be shared with festival-goers. He continued, “It is an opportunity for people to gather – reflect – experience – feel – and process,” noting that cinema attendance was strong during the Great Depression.
Launched in 1986, this year’s Sbiff will include films from 58 countries. Numbered among its 45 world premieres is opening night film “the public,” the first feature written and directed by Emilio Estevez since 2010’s “The Way.” Set at a Cincinnati public library, the film follows its homeless and marginalized patrons during a dangerous cold spell. Well known in these parts as the writer of Nicolas Winding Refn's Pusher, Denmark's Jens Dahl moves behind the camera with his feature directing debut 3 Things. And he's got a little bit of high profile help in front of the camera as well in the form of Games Of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Borgen's Birgitte Hjort Sørensen. 3 Things centers in and around a hotel where the police are negotiating the terms of a witness protection deal with the prime suspect of a big money deposit robbery and an expert on explosives, Mikael (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). In order to agree to the deal Mikael demands three things from the police: that his former girlfriend is brought to him, that the police bring the contents...

With the release of The Dark Knight Rises and the completion of the Dark Knight Trilogy it had me thinking of where it falls when compared to other classic trilogies. Trilogies used to be reserved for a select few, but now everything has a trilogy. I mean Step Up had a trilogy…until they made another movie and now it’s a quadrilogy. To be fair there is a lot of plot in that series so four movies were absolutely necessary. In fact I’m quite surprised Step Up Revolutions wasn’t split up into two parts. That’s not to say that there aren’t any great ones out there, because there are quite a few and I hope to point out some of those today. I created a list of what I think are the best trilogies ever made. I considered a few things when making this list.

Nicolas Winding Refn became a real commodity real fast, though his immense talent as a filmmaker more than explains a) why this happened and b) why we care. He does, however, have his name on one project that we haven’t paid much attention to: the British remake of his debut, 1996′s gritty crime film Pusher. Directed by Luis Prieto and executive produced by the original creator himself, Pusher follows the same story as its original, wherein a drug dealer has to pay back a kingpin after screwing up a job. This time, in England.
Production wrapped sometime in the last month, and Deadline reports that The Weinstein Company has — through their new outlet, Radius — picked up American rights to the picture. And, in a somewhat poetic turn, the acquisition was partially made by Tom Quinn and Jason Janego, who ran Magnolia when the studio put out Winding Refn‘s...
