He left the entertainment industry at age 17 and attended college at UCLA. He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelors degree in philosophy. He received a PhD from Harvard University in 1975. He taught philosophy at various universities and finished his career as a tenured professor at the University of Hawaii in Hilo, from which he retired in 2011 and moved to San Luis Obispo, CA.
