"He's proving to be quite the distraction." Goldwyn Films debuts this indie romance on VOD in December, after its initial small theatrical debut in September in both the UK and US. Surprised by Oxford marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Ryan Whitaker, who's adapting the story found in the memoir by Carolyn Weber. Brilliant but emotionally-guarded Caro arrives in Oxford with the singular goal of attaining her PhD, but through a turbulent friendship with a charming young man she begins to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and love. Headlined by Rose Reid, the film takes viewers on a transformative and tumultuous journey. The cast includes Ruairi O'Connor as her lover, Phyllis Logan, Mark Williams, Simon Callow, with Emma Naomi, Michael Culkin, and Annabelle Holloway. This doesn't seem all that bad for a romance, featuring a bit less camp than usual, plus strong performances and intense passion. // Continue Reading...

Somehow, Sean Durkin made his breakthrough movie Martha Marcy May Marlene nearly a decade ago. Even harder to believe, sadly, is that it has taken him nine years to get a follow-up feature made. Well, at the very least, that wait is now over, as The Nest is out in release. A definite left-turn in some ways from his prior outing, it’s another acting showcase and slow burn that mixes drama and thriller elements. The psychology of his characters remains Durkin’s main concern, and that’s what makes this work so well. Well, that and a pair of terrific actors relishing the opportunity to lay into each other, of course. The film is a drama, set in the 1980s. On the surface, entrepreneur Rory O’Hara (Jude Law) and his wife Allison O’Hara (Carrie Coon) seem to have the perfect life. They have a daughter in Samantha (Oona Roche...

With the start of Autumn just a few days away, it’s time to get serious at the cinema. Though with this year’s unique (to say the least) circumstances we didn’t get much in the way of escapist “popcorn” flicks this Summer. But the big awards films are beginning to trickle in, and so we’re given this somber drama all about the “unraveling” of a marriage. At this time last year, the Netflix-produced feature, appropriately titled Marriage Story, ended up with many such trophies as it told the tale of the “uncoupling” of a duo (with a son). It did deal with the reasons for the “break”, mainly one half’s ‘loss of individual identity” along with the element of infidelity. That’s a big reason for splitting in most dramas, along with abuse (substance and physical/verbal). But, the movies haven’t often dealt with...

IFC Films has released the full-length official trailer for the indie drama The Nest, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This is Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin's follow-up feature that boasts a number of excellent performances in a nuanced character study. Carrie Coon co-stars as his wife, who starts to see through all his bullshit. Writer-director Sean Durkin’s mesmerizing debut “Martha Marcy May Marlene” may put unreasonable expectations on his long-awaited sophomore effort, “The Nest,” because the masterful psychological thriller that put Durkin on the map has a lot more going for it than the sleek, contained period piece that has followed it up. However, “Martha” casts an unmistakable shadow on “The Nest,” which displays the same complex formalism of its predecessor while settling into a more conventional mold. In Durkin’s icy, slow-burn drama, every frame benefits from masterful composition. Carrie Coon and Jude Law deliver sizzling performances defined by mutual indignation, but it

To say that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s latest joint exploit, Holmes and Watson, is an abomination to all senses and a travesty to cinema would be to understate the truly abysmal and quite frankly condescending nature of the final product.
Subjectively the comedic prowess and effectiveness of cheap and on the nose pop culture references are completely relative to that of an audience – of whom are completely game and invested for a fun, entertaining ride (no matter what the actual context of the story entails) even before the picture ever begins. Mankiewicz's 1950 Oscar-winning classic All About Eve, Bette Davis plays Margo Channing, a major Broadway star who, despite her talent, wit, and some forty-odd years on this planet, falls prey to the youthful, ambitious wannabe Eve Harrington: sweet, soft-spoken Anne Baxter on the outside; ruthless, poisonous gargoyle on the inside.* More than a decade earlier, in 1937 to be exact, W. In Maugham's tale, Julia, despite her talent, wit, and some forty-odd years on this planet, succumbs to her vanity when she falls madly in love with Tom Fennel, a handsome – and deceptively innocent-looking – American half her age. Poirot The Big Four ITV
B Van Heusen
The Big Four began with a shocking murder — that of Russian chess master Dr Ivan Savaranoff (Michael Culkin) who dropped dead in the middle of a game against the American billionaire Abe Ryland (James Carroll Jordan). It would have been a newsworthy event at the best of times but The Big Four was set just before the outbreak of World War II and Peace Party member Ryland was one of the few people who could avert catastrophe. Or at least that was the case before he was framed for Savaranoff’s murder. Luckily for him, chess fan Hercule Poirot had other ideas and set about unmasking the quartet behind that killing and several others.
The unmasking of the killer took longer than usual as Poirot (David Suchet) rather theatrically fingered the last surviving villain while on stage surrounded by props and a couple of non-speaking drugged-up suspects.

WikiLeaks movie ‘The Fifth Estate’: Bradley Manning episode ‘the best part of the film’ (photo: Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange in ‘The Fifth Estate’) (See previous post: “‘The Fifth Estate’ Movie Review Pt.1: ‘Tasty’ But ‘Opaque’ Take on Julian Assange.”) The Fifth Estate begins and eventually circles back to the Bradley Manning episode, in which the now-incarcerated Army private handed almost 450,000 U.S. military documents to WikiLeaks. This section is, by a far sight, the best part of the film. It slows down to consider the stakes and let interpersonal conflicts simmer and boil. Here, Daniel’s growing sense of apostasy towards the imperious Assange mixes with traditional media (represented by David Thewlis, as The Guardian reporter Nick Davies) deciding whether to cross the Rubicon and get into bed with someone so arrogantly deficient in journalistic ethics. Out of self-preservation, the old-school Guardian partnered with the internet provocateur and got what it deserved.

The person she has in mind for that part is Mariana Belcombe (Anna Madeley), with whom she has developed a clandestine romantic relationship (they have “connected"); that is until 19th century English culture gets the better of Belcombe and she marries a rich aged widower, Charles Lawton (Michael Culkin). Frameline, San Francisco’s Gay & Lesbian Film Festival now in its 34th year, will kick off on Thursday, June 17, with a screening of James Kent’s The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, about "what might have happened if Elizabeth Bennet had ignored Mr. Darcy and pursued the local ladies?" Actually, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister is not a revamping of a Jane Austen novel. Instead, Jane English’s screenplay follows a young woman attempting to live an authentic "lesbian life" in Regency England. Maxine Peake plays Anne Lister. Others in the film’s cast are: Anna Madeley, Susan Lynch, Gemma Jones, and Michael Culkin. Attendees at Frameline’s gala opening ceremony will quite possibly be met by picketers protesting the Israeli consulate’s participation as one of the festival’s sponsors. Frameline 2010 comes to a close on June 27 with a screening of Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Howl,...

Sometimes being ensconced so deeply in the world of horror, it’s nearly impossible to pay attention to anything else. So when Variety announces that rising star Rebecca Hall has officially joined Oliver Parker’s adaptation of Dorian Gray, I realize have no idea who this girl is.
Apparently Hall’s made a name for herself with roles in Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona, a film I’ve never heard of, and will be appearing in the upcoming stage-to-screen adaptation Frost/Nixon.
Ben Barnes is in the role of Mr. Gray, while Colin Firth will be playing the man who corrupts him the most. Other cast members recently added include Ben Chaplin (The Thin Red Line), Emilia Fox (Cashback), Rachel Hurd-Wood (An American Haunting), Michael Culkin (Photographing Fairies) and Max Irons, son of Jeremy Irons.
Shooting on Dorian Gray will be underway soon, so look for more updates!
