In our new series, we look at eight cities where live music has exploded — from legendary hubs like New Orleans and Nashville and Chicago, to rising hot spots like Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Portland, Maine. Our latest: Detroit, where pressing plants, innovative studios, and offbeat festivals make it one of the most vibrant scenes in the country.
“Detroit is our own universe,” says underground-rap hero Danny Brown. “Diverse artists — not necessarily what’s popular on the radio or YouTube, or what’s cracking in the rest of the world. We have our own world.

In the decade or so since Stephen Ellison released his breakout Los Angeles LP, he’s established himself as hip-hop’s headiest auteur, a maximalist Brian Eno for the medical marijuana age whose meteor-storm productions triangulate funk, electronica, and assorted jazz fusions, and are attached to out-there film projects and a live show that updates the psychedelic eye candy of golden-age Pink Floyd. Flying Lotus beats have rootstock in West Coast strains (Madlib, the Stones Throw Records school, the Dr. Dre – Snoop Dogg G-funk axis). The Midwest is in there,...

Paul Woolford’s “Hang Up Your Hang Ups” is a dance-floor jackhammer, a vocal house record as spare as it is adrenalized. The track’s immediacy isn’t necessarily unexpected; Woolford is a veteran U.K. producer with several well-known club singles. What is more surprising: Though Woolford mainly releases tracks through esteemed small labels like Planet E (run by revered Detroit techno producer Carl Craig) or Running Back (helmed by the impressively open-eared Frankfurt-based DJ Gerd Janson), “Hang Up Your Hang Ups” has been receiving play on decidedly mainstream outlets like BBC Radio 1.

The Weeknd surprised fans last week with the release of his Daft Punk-assisted song “Starboy,” the title track to his upcoming album, out November 25. Now the “Earned It” singer has shared the cinematic music video for the single, directed by frequent collaborator Grant Singer.
The dark and gritty clip features The Weeknd with his former signature hairstyle, held hostage and suffocated by an unknown masked stranger dressed in black. As the video continues, it’s revealed that the man is his new “Starboy” persona, who then starts to smash awards, plaques and all history of his former self with a large neon cross. At the end he’s seen driving away into the night with a panther as his passenger. Unfortunately the electronic duo only appear in a portrait at the beginning of the clip.

YouTube has offered the world many wonderful things — cat videos, easily digestible TV clips, and finally, old TV commercials. These commercials function as interesting time capsules of a different time in American life, and serve as a neat reminder of the cultural moment’s short-lived relevancy, i.e. what’s normal now will seem outdated and strange to future generations. Naturally, these old commercials are open to parody, but that doesn’t make it an easy. As any true parodic artist will tell you, it takes a true fan of the genre to do it well. Look no further than the YouTube channel Chainsaw Estates, who has created a parody of a 1980s commercial for a board game version of Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror film, “The Shining.”

Gaspar Noé’s mass, passionate following doesn’t exist by accident. The filmmaker’s four features, from last year’s “Love” to perhaps his most popular film “Enter the Void,” have stunned with their visual beauty and their unique style of filmmaking. Choosing the best movie Stanley Kubrick ever made is a contentious task fit for the War Room, but deeming one the funniest is considerably easier: “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” elicits more laughter than “The Shining,” “2001” and “Eyes Wide Shut” combined. A making-of documentary available on YouTube goes behind the scenes of Kubrick’s political satire.

By the late 1950s, a narrator informs us in the opening minutes, Kubrick was deeply troubled by the prospect of nuclear war; James B. Harris, the filmmaker’s former production partner, says it was the only thing on his mind after finishing “Lolita.” This led him to read more than 50 books on the subject, one of which came recommended from a friend at the International Institute for Strategic...

After its tenth anniversary, there’s no denying that Movement has lived up to its name. The Detroit music festival once again succeeded in drawing the techno elite from every corner of the globe to celebrate the genre in the city of its birthplace, but this year’s edition in particular served as a special homecoming of sorts.
After all, the extra year digit was but one milestone reached by the techno community this past week. Shortly before the event took place, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan declared the week of May 23rd-30th Detroit Techno Week. Following that, a business report presented a couple of days later at the International Music Summit in Ibiza revealed that the genre surpassed all others in Beatport downloads last year. Then, on the first day of the festival, the Movement Main Stage was headlined by none other than Kraftwerk – a group whose music tremendously...

It's still January, but already Detroit is looking forward to a weekend in the middle of May, when sweaty music lovers will crowd Hart Plaza for the city's annual electronic music festival, Movement.
The thumping bass and substance-fueled (so we've heard) event, which will take place May 25, 26 and 27, has already released the Phase One lineup. And there's some very notable names, like Carl Craig and Derrick May.
Tickets are already available on the Movement website, where they're counting down the days (114, in case you were wondering), hours, minutes and seconds until the sound of techno techno fills the air. Relive the madness from last year -- and get ready for Movement 2013 -- with help from the pulse-quickening trailer posted above. A text list of Phase One performers follows, if you're into that sort of thing. Are you looking forward to the electronic music festival, or will you be avoiding Hart Plaza?...

With a new expanded two-weekend format, a massive new main stage structure, and a big 15th anniversary to celebrate, it was obvious Ultra Music Festival would be going big for 2013.
Instead, it went massive. The just-released Phase 2 lineup reveals Ultra will host its most diverse and thorough lineup yet this March in Miami's Bayfront Park: crowd faves like Laidback Luke, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, and Dirty South are back, but the lineup also includes a slew of live acts including Snoop Dogg and Sleigh Bells.
"What we've achieved with this edition's ocean of talent and stage production is we feel unprecedented," said Ultra founder, CEO and president Russell Faibisch. "As the industry we work in continues to explode, with so much talent emerging and the taste of our consumer changing in the process, diversity was key."

Everyone from the Magnetic Fields to Explosions in the Sky will be present at this year's MoogFest, and to that end, we got Matt Hendrickson, Director of Marketing at AC Entertainment, to give us the rundown on the five bands who represent the cream of the crop at Moogfest. 1. Carl Craig, Sessions (2008) One of techno’s titans, Carl Craig has consistently pushed the genre’s boundaries while recording under his own name, delivering various [...]...

There is some sensibility left in Gamera vs. Gyaos. This is the transition film for the original series, after a kid-friendly first-entry and adult-oriented second, Gyaos splits the audience base right down the middle. No child is going to care for the story of a small village looking to capitalize on a construction company willing to buy their land. Sure, the human story is peppered with comedic characters, but the tale of overwhelming greed in the face of adversity is not going to resonate with younger children. Neither will the surprisingly glorified violence, rather graphic even if the blood is bright pink. Gamera rips Gyoas' toes clean off, forcing the monster to regrow the lost part in what seems like an awfully painful sequence. However, the younger set will appreciate the toned down Gamera suit, the larger eyes and softer face certainly friendlier, and nicely in contrast with the angular face of his new opponent.

Shout! Factory has come back strong this week with two new DVDs in their recent acquisition of the Gamera franchise. And they’ve taken the next four films in the series and made two double feature DVDs, which makes for a fun and balanced viewing session.
Gamera Vs. Gyaos (or Gamera Vs. Gaos here in the States) from 1967 is the direct sequel to Gamera Vs. Barugon has Gamera playing more of a hero role this time around, helping Japan fight a new threat to the land, Gyaos, who is a huge bat creature. How could you go wrong with Gamera fighting a gigantic vampire bat? You really can’t, to be honest, and we have some typical battles between the two throughout the film. As usual, mankind somehow awakens/irritates this evil and it starts to devour people and destroy anything in its path. Gamera tries to protect Eiichi Kanamura,...
