In what is easily the most informative internet message board thread I’ve ever come across, “birth – Harris Savides,” which was started on Cinematography.com by a young man you may have heard of named Jody Lipes on November 1, 2004, the conversation turns around midway through to the aggressive underexposure used by Savides on Birth (pictured above). One of the forum’s members, who claimed to have worked on Birth, explained that Savides underexposed the film two stops, and then pulled it two additional stops, netting a total underexposure of four stops – which seems to have sent the head of every camera nerd on Cinematography.com (is there anybody else on the site?) spinning fast enough to power the electric grid of a major metropolitan city.
The posts on the thread almost read like remembrances of Savides’ gargantuan talent, and in light of his tragic passing of brain cancer yesterday at...

Chicago – The great “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” played to sold-out crowds earlier this year and completely rejuvenated the careers of the rock Gods that never were - Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner aka Anvil. Now this great movie is available on DVD and you shouldn’t let it go by unseen.
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
Displaying the same quirky charms as breakthrough documentary hits like “Spellbound,” “American Movie,” and “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” (but sharing subject in common more with “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster”), “Anvil” is simply a joy. The momentum that carried the documentary about Anvil lifted the band themselves. This was one of the few times where the phrase “jump on the bandwagon” seemed more than a little appropriate.
Anvil co-founders Robb Reiner (L) and Steve “Lips” Ludlow contemplate their band’s future in a scene from Sacha Gervasi’s feature documentary, Anvil!

Chicago – Sacha Gervasi, the director of the great “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” likes to use the word awesome. When we talked about his brilliant love letter to his favorite band, Gervasi couldn’t hide the super-fan inside that is just loving the rock show that has built up around Steve “Lips” Ludlow and Robb Reiner.
The story around “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” is nearly as interesting as the movie itself. Made by a talented director who still remembers the first time he saw the band in September of 1982, the film has evolved into a bonafide phenomenon. Open to the contents page of the newest Rolling Stone and you’ll see a picture of Anvil. The film about them is expanding to over 200 cities and the band is even going to be included in a new Rock Band download and playing the Monsters of Rock festival in England. If...

Chicago – Abramorama’s “Anvil!: The Story of Anvil” has been building buzz nearly as loud as the heavy metal featured in this excellent documentary, the best of the year so far and such a good film that I can nearly guarantee that you won’t see a better doc for the next eight months.
Rating: 5.0/5.0 “Anvil!: The Story of Anvil” has the same quirky charm as a lot of breakthrough non-fiction hits of recent years like “Spellbound,” “Young@Heart,” and “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” but the movies it will most remind viewers of are “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster,” “American Movie,” and “This is Spinal Tap”. Although, contrary to some ridiculous web conspiracy theories out there, Anvil is 100% real.
