Apple, Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, have set RadicalMedia as creative and production partner on their previously announced documentary series about mental health for Apple TV+.
In addition, the principals announced three key members of the show’s creative team: directors and executive producers Dawn Porter and Asif Kapadia, and showrunner and executive producer Kahane Cooperman. Along with Winfrey and Prince Harry, RadicalMedia’s Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick will serve as executive producers on the series, which aims to dispel the stigma surrounding mental health.
While a premiere date for the mental health project has not yet been confirmed, Winfrey’s involvement with Apple could offer the tech giant a way to stand out from the streaming pack.

The streaming market in Australia and New Zealand will soon become even more cluttered and competitive as AMC Networks announced its direct-to-consumer services Sundance Now and Shudder will launch in both countries later this year.
Specialising in genre entertainment covering thrillers, suspense and horror, Shudder will cost $4.99 a month or $49.99 per year. AMC did not disclose the fees for Sundance Now, which costs $US6.99 a month in the Us.
The expansion builds on both services’ growth in subscribers in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany and Austria.
“Our continued expansion of Shudder and Sundance Now speaks to our success in offering audiences exclusive and original content they can’t get anywhere else along with an unparalleled user experience,” said Paul Rehrig, executive VP of business development for AMC Networks.
“We look forward to introducing both services into these new markets as consumer demand for our curated streaming offerings continues to grow.

Tinker Bell fan Brianna Perez meets Joseph Feingold in Joe's Violin
In my conversation at Radical Media with Kahane Cooperman, director of this year's Oscar-nominated Joe's Violin, she explained how Doc NYC Executive Director Raphaela Neihausen, Richard Linklater and Dazed And Confused, Jon Stewart and The Daily Show, and Letters From Baghdad co-director Zeva Oelbaum supported bringing to the screen the moving story of Holocaust survivor Joseph Feingold and young musician Brianna Perez from the Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls.
On being with Joseph Feingold: "I learned in that hour that the violin had a poignant story attached to it and also that he was a capable storyteller."
When an object changes hands, commonly its story dies. We might speculate about the previous owner of a piece of vintage jewelry that catches our eye, or wonder who sat in an antique chair 100 years ago. Joe's Violin was born...

Brie Larson Calls on Hollywood to Fight For Change: ‘Artists Are the Ones That the Politicians Fear’
As Oscars weekend kicks into full swing, Hollywood plays home to a host of events honoring nominees and other industry luminaries. On Friday night, the 10th Annual Women In Film Pre-Oscar Cocktail Party celebrated some of the year’s most lauded women nominees, including Actress contenders Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, and Ruth Negga, along with documentary filmmakers Ava DuVernay and Kahane Cooperman, producers Dede Gardner, Jenno Topping, Donna Gigliotti, and many more.
Officially hosted by both Wif President Cathy Schulman and Oscar winner Brie Larson, the West Hollywood event was a busy, cheery event that focused firmly on the promise of the future, even in uncertain times. Also on hand were members of Reframe, a new activist organization formed to mobilize for gender equality in the film industry, including Schulman, Sundance’s Keri Putnam, Miramax’s Zanne Devine, directors Paul Feig and Kimberly Peirce, and Franklin Leonard.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Jon Stewart took the stage after a screening of the Oscar-nominated short film “Joe’s Violin” in New York on Monday, but Stewart quickly had the crowd in stitches — all at President Donald Trump’s expense.
“Joe’s Violin” tells the story of a 91-year-old Holocaust survivor who donates his violin to an instrument drive and later connects with the 12-year-old schoolgirl from the Bronx who receives it.
The improbable friendship between the Polish refugee Joe Feingold and Brianna Perez, whose family is from the Dominican Republic, feels especially timely in light of the Trump administration’s continued efforts to turn away refugees and crack down on immigrants entering the U.S.

During this year’s Oscar Nominees Luncheon, Denzel Washington met a very special and talented young woman: 14-year-old violinist Brianna Perez, the subject of the documentary short “Joe’s Violin.” Though anyone would be star-struck in the presence of the Academy Award winner, it was Denzel who ended up amazed at the teen’s great talent.
The two met poolside at the Beverly Hilton while giving interviews following the luncheon on Monday. Perez attended as the guest of “Joe’s Violin” director Kahane Cooperman, whose documentary is nominated this year.

4.1 Miles – USA/Greece – 26 minutes
While Trump’s administration unconstitutionally discriminates against Muslims from countries he doesn’t do business with, heroes are risking their lives to protect those who need protecting. One of these is Kyriakos Papadopoulos, a Greek Coast Guard captain from the island of Lebos who goes out into the choppy waters of the Aegean Sea to rescue refugees braving the four-mile distance from Turkey. He says that they go out every hour to pull in about two hundred innocent survivors of war, the numbers adding up to around 600,000 between 2015 and 2016 alone. Smugglers take their money, put them on boats they know won’t protect against the waves, and send them away. If not for Kyriakos and the others, these 600,000 would all be dead.

When the nominees for best short films are read during the Oscars ceremony, most viewers at home have little to no associations with any of the films. That’s something that ShortsHD is hoping to fix when they partner with Magnolia Pictures to show the nominated films in all three short form categories — live action, animated, and documentary — in 500 screens across North America this Friday. This year’s short documentaries are not lighthearted, but tell vital human stories about resistance in the face of suffering.

MaryAnn’s quick take… I would give the Oscar in a three-way tie to the Syrian-themed nominees, which offer stunningly intimate observations on the ongoing humanitarian crisis. [pictured above: “4.1 Miles”] I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Three of the five short documentaries nominated for an Oscar this year are chapters in the same larger ongoing story: the Syrian refugee exodus. Together they offer stunningly intimate observations on the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II, putting faces to the horrors and bringing the tragedy of it home in ways we simply have not seen before.
“4.1 Miles” is an absolutely shattering verité look at raw human desperation…
I would give the Oscar in a three-way tie to all of them, but that would be unprecedented. So my pick for the very best of them is “4.1 Miles” [IMDb|official site], the first film from Greek journalist Daphne Matziaraki.

Of the five films Oscar-nominated for Documentary Short Subject, three address the Syrian civil war and refugee crisis: “4.1 Miles,” a New York Times Op-Doc about a Greek Coast Guard Captain and the boatloads of refugees he rescues daily; “Watani: My Homeland,” about one family’s migration from front-line Aleppo to a small town in Germany; and “The White Helmets,” Netflix’s portrait of the volunteer first responders in Aleppo, from the director/producer team behind the 2015 Oscar-nominated feature documentary, “Virunga.”

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

Gibney now has two films that explore the myriad ways that the internet can wreak havoc, with 2013’s “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks” and the Oscar-shortlisted “Zero Days,” which stemmed from the U.S. and Israeli Stuxnet operation that destroyed 1000 nuclear centrifuges. Initially, producer Marc Shmuger, who brought him both projects, “knew more about it than I did,” said Gibney. “He had access to people telling him interesting things about the Stuxnet operation. It seemed like an event that deserved a deeper dive.”
Gibney dug deeper and found out how scary the world of cyberwarfare could be. And as the election took its twisty turns, revealing the Russia hacks, more of us caught up with a new reality that had only been imagined in science-fiction. The Matrix is here.

“Mr. Robot,” the psychological thriller created by Sam Esmail, captures the social anxiety disorder of vigilante hacker Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) in a way that makes him both scary and empathetic.
“It’s channeling something going on in the world… it’s like ‘Catcher in the Rye,'” said Philip Harrison, who edited three episodes including the finale.
Alderson is recruited by mysterious fsociety founder, Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) to help bring down corporate America, including the company he’s paid to protect as cybersecurity engineer.
“Sam has slowed down the pace so we can trust the story,” continued Harrison (who previously cut the more conventional “Glee”). “And that’s been a real adjustment for me. It definitely puts you in the brain space as Elliot. I have to trust that I have the skills to construct it as an overall episode. Looking at it again through Sam’s eyes,...

Each of the 10 half-hour episodes is a uniquely curated set of documentary and fiction shorts, comedy, poetry, animation, and cartoons drawn from the rich content of The New Yorker. Both unexpected and hugely entertaining, the series is up for Emmy consideration in the informational program category.

The documentary shorts presented at the Tribeca Film Festival included both human stories and New York’s past. The films delved into themes of chaos, survival, and a glimpse into a life of the city that forever evolves but a time past that cannot be forgotten. After the screening, the filmmakers joined in for a Q&A.
About the Film: "Joe's Violin"
A 91-year-old Holocaust survivor donates his violin to an instrument drive, changing the life of a 12-year-old schoolgirl from the Bronx and unexpectedly, his own.
About the Director: Kahane Cooperman is the director/producer of "Joe's Violin." She has also directed several other documentaries. She is currently the showrunner/executive producer of "The New Yorker Presents." Prior to that role, she was a co-executive producer of ‘The Daily Show’ with Jon Stewart. She began her career at Maysles Films.
Kahane Cooperman talks about "Joe’s Violin"
Cooperman began by introducing the two subjects of her film who were seated in the audience, the violin owner Joseph Feingold and Brianna.
“The way I got this idea was very simple. My car radio was on and I tuned on the classical radio station Wqxr and I heard a promo for their instrument drive; it said donate your instruments and the instruments are going to New York City school kids. They mentioned the donations they already had gotten and one of the instruments was Joseph’s violin. I just thought, 'I wonder if there's a story there with this violin and if the student who gets the violin will know the story.' I got in touch with the radio station and they allowed me the privilege of pursuing the story and this film is what unfolded. It was a very moving experience. I do love music but I don't play an instrument. I think music is incredibly powerful but I'm also moved by the idea of how a small gesture can make you dream and change someone’s life. Somehow the idea of this was very compelling to me and that it might play out in the context of this one instrument shared by two people who were born 80 years apart.
About the Film: "Mulberry"
This cinematic portrait of Little Italy explores how a working class neighborhood of tenement buildings transformed into the third most expensive zip code in the United States. Part funny, part sad, the film investigates how gentrification and rent control are affecting the neighborhood’s long-term residents.
About the Director: Paul Stone
Brooklynite Paul Stone started his directing career in the edit room at Ridley Scott & Associates. In "Tales of Time Square," Paul recreated 1980’s Time Square. The footage was often mistaken for stock and went on to be screened at over 50 festivals in the U.S. and abroad. His previous short ‘Man Under’ (Tff 2015) explored the rise in NYC subway suicides.
Paul Stone talks about "Mulberry"
“I saw my neighborhood disappearing, changing. I have no problem with gentrification, but it’s gotten to a point of hyper gentrification. Little Italy in New York is known for its soul and its people, and it was rapidly disappearing. I wanted to tell the story about who inspired me in terms of my friends and that Little Italy is still alive and well, and that there are still a lot of characters left.
About the Film: "Starring Austin Pendleton"
Austin Pendleton is that quintessential character actor you might recognize. We follow Austin as he reflects on his life and craft, while his A-list peers discuss his vast influence, dogged determination, and what it means to be an original in today's celebrity-obsessed world.
About the Directors Gene Gallerano and David H. Holmes
David H. Holmes has studied and acted under the direction of Mr. Pendleton. His film and television credits include ‘Birdman’, ‘Law and Order’, ‘Girls’, ‘Mr. Robot’, and ‘The Following’. Gene Gallerano is the co-founder of The Neboya Collective, and has produced and starred in works including, Occupy’, ‘Texas’, ‘Fireworks’, and ‘The Talk Men’, which he also directed.
Holmes and Gallerano talk about "Starring Austin Pendleton"
The directors met ten years ago in an Off-Broadway show and studied with Austin Pendleton for about five years. They consider him a big mentor. “We look up to him a lot and we wanted to make sure in the end that we could look him in the eye. He was very happy we made the film. At the Tribeca Talks the other day it was the first time Austin saw it. Someone asked him if he had any input into the film and he said no because then you start manipulating it and controlling it; particularly his stutter, he said I would have told them ‘cut that’.” He wasn’t preventing us from making art.”
About the Film: "Taylor and Ultra on the 60s, The Factory and Being a Warhol Superstar"
Warhol superstar Ultra Violet (Isabelle Colin Dufresne) and Lower East Side icon Taylor Mead (poet/actor/artist) share their stories of Manhattan in the 1960s.
About the Director: Brian Bayerl
Brian Bayerl's documentary work includes ‘8: The Mormon Proposition’ (Sundance 2010), and ‘For Once in My Life’ (SXSW Audience Award Winner 2010). This is his third collaboration with producer Michael Huter, including ‘Datuna: Portrait of America’ (London's Raindance Winner 2015) and Full Circle.
Brian Bayerl talks about "Taylor and Ultra on the 60s, The Factory and Being a Warhol Superstar"
“Our producer came across photographs of Robert Indiana, Andy Warhol, Taylor Mead and Ultra Violet and a lot of other figures of the sixties Pop Art. When documenting those photographs we met Taylor Mead and Ultra Violet and instantly fell in love with them; they were just so captivating and charismatic and fun that over the next four years we had opportunities to interview them and gather footage. When we lost both of them, we were approached by the Warhol Museum about putting something together and that's exactly what we wanted to do. We put this film together as an homage to both of them.”
About the film "Dead Ringer"
There are only four outdoor phone booths left in all of New York City—this is a late night conversation with one of them.
About the Directors: Alex Kliment, Dana O’Keefe, and Michael Tucker
Alex Kliment is a filmmaker and musician from New York. He is also a talking head. Dana O'Keefe is a filmmaker based in New York and Stockholm. Michael Tucker is a documentary filmmaker who lives in upstate New York.
Alex Kliment, Dana O’Keefe, and Michael Tucker talk about "Dead Ringer"
“Our film started with learning about the statistic that there were only four outdoor telephone booths left in New York City. The city's replacing them with Wi-Fi hotspots, We thought, ‘What's a fun way to dramatize the changing urban landscape that also reflects a lot of other changes of the human landscape and how we relate to each other. We thought about how to impersonate and put ourselves in the mind of a pay phone. This film was an opportunity to visit with very tragic heroes of our sidewalk -- the payphones of New York City.”

Watch this on The Scene. "The New Yorker Presents" debuted its first two shows at Sundance, where I sat down with series showrunner Kahane Cooperman (winner of 11 Emmys and 2 Peabodys as executive producer of Jon Stewart's “The Daily Show”) and Jigsaw Productions' Stacey Offman. The series debuts February 16th on Amazon. Watch a segment from the series, in which director Alex Gibney and New Yorker writer Lawrence Wright discuss what the CIA knew about the 9/11 hijackers before 9/11, in the clip above. The series brings together a range of filmmakers for a fascinating mix of shorts and doc features based on content from The New Yorker: Steve James, Robert Pulcini & Shari Springer Berman, Lucy Walker, Dawn Porter and Roger Ross Williams among them. Produced by Condé Nast Entertainment and Jigsaw Productions, "The New Yorker Presents" is unlike anything you've ever seen before, both unexpected and hugely entertaining, combining documentaries,...

In one year, Alex Gibney directed three documentaries; one on the legendary singer and actor Frank Sinatra, another on Apple co-founder and industry icon Steve Jobs, and also a little HBO doc you may have heard of titled "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief." To say he's a busy man is an understatement, as would saying he's a game-changing documentarian. Yet the latter adjective is fitting for the savvy helmer's next project: a docu-series (that's not a docu-series) set to premiere on Amazon (via a release strategy that's a first for the company) and co-produced by Kahane Cooperman (from "The Daily Show"). But these two are far from the only creative minds behind "The New Yorker Presents," their new half-hour series set to debut weekly for Amazon Prime subscribers. In fact, they're more like the curators than the creators, as they have a hand in constructing the episodes...

It was another great year at the Sundance Film Festival! There were so many fantastic movies shown, and I still have a couple more to go. I'm really happy to say that Miles Teller and J.K. Simmon's film Whiplash took home the top two prizes, winning the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. This was my number one favorite film from the festival, and it seems like everyone else at the festival loved it too, so it doesn't surprise me that it won.

X-Men franchise director Bryan Singer, whose first two features debuted at the Sundance Film Festival — including The Usual Suspects in 1995 — was one of the industry figures named to the Sundance juries that will judge this year’s films when the festival begins next week. Singer, who has X-Men: Days of Future Past due in May, will be one of five members of the U.S. Dramatic Jury. Other members of the juries include Tracy Chapman, Lone Scherfig, Leonard Maltin, and screenwriter Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). A complete list of the juries, courtesy of the Sundance Film Festival, can be viewed after the jump.

Chicago – Richard Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused” is not just a fun comedy, not just a clever slice of nostalgia, and not just a stoner movie. It is, without question, one of the best films of the ’90s. It passes through nostalgia to something more like a time machine, in a way not that dissimilar to George Lucas’ “American Graffiti.” A deeply personal project from one of our best modern writer/directors, “Dazed and Confused,” recently released on Criterion Blu-ray and re-released on Criterion DVD, gets better with each passing year. And this stellar edition, one of their most lauded on standard DVD, is the only way to really experience the film. There have been Universal-released editions of the film with half (or less) of the special features, dull transfers, and even annoying packaging. Spring for the Criterion version.

Modern Family, Downton Abbey, and the other winners of the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced. The 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards “often referred to simply as the Emmy, is a television production award, similar in nature to the Peabody Awards but more focused on entertainment, and is considered the television equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film), Grammy Awards (for music) and Tony Awards (for stage).” The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded the 2010-2011 Primetime Emmys® for programs and individual achievements last night in Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. I was happy to see Peter Dinklage win for his work in Game of Thrones. He deserved it. The full listing of the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards winners is below.

G’day Zoners! I hope your all enjoying April Fool’s Day, and more importantly brushing up on your “Friday” lyrics so you can all sing-a-long with Stephen tonight. As much as I loathe that song I really hope Stephen can put the Tgi back in Friday – it was once my favourite day of the week. But I digress. This week in Six Degrees News Jon Stewart makes a cameo in “The Adjustment Bureau”, Jason Jones is co-starring in a new CBS comedy pilot, Lewis Black stopped by “The Late Late Show”, Mark Malkoff will be a guest on “Beer Diplomacy”, Amy Sedaris has a new iPad App, Conan talks about “Conan O’Brian Can’t Stop” and Movits! are touring Canada and The Us

Within the world of film, some projects get made, and others get lost to history, never getting their much deserved time in front of the camera. It looks like Richard Linklater may be getting a film added to that latter list.
According to The Playlist, not only is Linklater’s sequel to his beloved classic, and Criterion staple, Dazed & Confused “just sitting there,” but lost amongst the recent collapse of Miramax, his once next film, Liar’s A-e, has been tossed away. “The Miramax undertow washed that one away,” he told the outlet. The film was set to follow a woman who finds objects left by her ex-boyfriend, while she makes the cross country trek to President Obama’s inauguration. While the premise didn’t really get me too excited, the screenplay was a top shelf piece of writing that was what we loved about previous Linklater films.
Even more upsetting?...
