On Tuesday night, North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R), a controversial figure known for his inflammatory remarks and staunch opposition to abortion rights, emerged victorious in the state’s Republican nomination for governor.
Robinson, the first black lieutenant governor in North Carolina’s history, is set to face off against North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein (D), in what promises to be a closely contested race in November. Both candidates are vying to succeed the current Democratic governor, Roy Cooper.
Robinson’s political career gained traction after an impassioned speech on gun laws he delivered to his local council in 2018 went viral, in which he presented himself as a representative of average Americans who feel targeted and endangered by attempts to restrict firearm access. Robinson’s speech propelled him into the spotlight and he subsequently became a conservative commentator, secured a position on the National Rifle Association board, and...

Update: John Leguizamo and his wife Justine were given choice spots at the White House State Dinner: At the president’s table, seated with figures including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Earlier, Leguizamo told a reporter that he “definitely” would be hitting the campaign trail for Joe Biden in 2024.
Asked about Biden’s outreach to Latino voters, Leguizamo said, “I think he’s doing the right things, which is getting Latin consulatns and talking to Latin experts who tell him how to address us, and make the effort. If you make the effort, we will be there, but you have to make the effort. I think he’s doing all that — him and Kamala Harris as well.”

The Disney-Spectrum carriage dispute has hit the state houses in New York and North Carolina.
On Friday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged Charter Spectrum and The Walt Disney Co. to “resolve this dispute as soon as possible,” and authorized New York’s Department of Public Service to secure refunds for the state’s 1.5 million or so TV customers impacted by the impasse.
“It’s simple: if you pay your cable bill, you deserve to get the services you pay for,” Hochul said in a statement Friday. “An ongoing corporate dispute is forcing customers to miss some of the highest profile televised events of the year – the least these companies can do is provide a refund. Disney and Charter must continue negotiating in good faith to ensure affordability and consumer choice. I also urge Disney to continue providing its programming under the terms of the prior agreement while negotiations continue.

North Carolina blocked minors from accessing gender-affirming treatment — including hormone therapy, puberty-blocking drugs, and surgical gender-transition procedures — on Wednesday after Republican lawmakers voted to override the governor’s veto on bills targeting transgender youth.
The bill on gender-transition treatment, House Bill 808, was approved by the State Legislature in June. The law takes effect immediately, but minors who had already begun treatment before Aug. 1 will be able to continue receiving care if their doctors deem it “medically necessary” and they have parental consent.

North Carolina Republicans, joining their colleagues across the country, have been cracking down on public education. Three GOP state senators introduced a bill this week that would pave the way for parents to have school officials removed from their posts and librarians prosecuted for failing to adhere to rules related to the dissemination of “harmful materials to minors.”
The House Education Committee pulled the bill from its agenda after it was originally planning to consider it on Wednesday, but committee Chair John Torbett reportedly insisted they would “come back to it.

California Governor Gavin Newsom headlined a fundraiser on Friday at the Los Angeles home of Ellen Bronfman Hauptman and Andrew Hauptman that raised more than 1 million to back the Democratic Governors Association, according to organizers.
Others on the bill along with Newsom were Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, Governor Jared Polis of Colorado, Governor Steve Sisolak of Nevada and Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, organizers said. All except Cooper are campaigning for reelection this year.
About 40 guests attended the event. North Carolina officials have approved a quintet of film and television projects to being filmed in the state as a part of its 25% rebate on production expenses, with shooting starting by the end of October.
The news was announced Tuesday, six months after almost the entire entertainment industry halted production due to the Covid-19 pandemic. State officials said the new projects will generate a direct in-state spend of more than $107 million while creating 8,671 job opportunities, including 650 crew positions for the state’s film professionals.
“Our state’s film industry continues to welcome new projects from prominent production companies,” said Gov. Roy Cooper. “The industry provides good jobs and opportunities for local businesses while showcasing on a big stage what North Carolina has to offer.”
The five projects approved for the North Carolina Film and Entertainment Grant include the following:
— “USS Christmas,” a made-for-television movie about a newspaper reporter who finds love on an aircraft carrier.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that plans for a large-scale Republican National Convention are being canceled, an acknowledgement of the flare-up in coronavirus cases in Jacksonville, Fl.
Instead, Trump said that some convention activities will take place in its original locale, Charlotte, Nc, but suggested that there would be virtual “tele-rallies.” He still plans to deliver an acceptance speech but in a “different form,” he said during a White House press briefing.
“We won’t do a big, crowded convention per se,” Trump told reporters on Thursday.
He and the Rnc moved the major events of the convention, including his acceptance speech, to Jacksonville last month after a tiff with the governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, a Democrat. Cooper had told the party that they would not be able guarantee that they would be able to hold a large-scale gathering as in past cycles, given the outbreak of the virus.

The Democratic National Convention will still take place in Milwaukee over four nights in August, but in a smaller venue and with much of the programming coming virtually from around the country.

The changes raise the prospect that delegates will cast their votes for president and vice president, as well as other party business, remotely.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Monday to openly warn North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper that if he doesn’t make a call on whether Charlotte can accommodate the Republican National Convention this summer, Trump will move it elsewhere.
The Gop convention is currently scheduled for August 24-27. The Democratic National Convention remains scheduled for August 17-20 in Milwaukee.
North Carolina on Friday moved into Phase 2 of lifting its coronavirus restrictions, which the state said runs through at least June 26 unless changed or canceled. Those guidelines restrict the use of large venues, arenas and stadiums, which would rule out large-scale events like political conventions.

Marvel’s secret digital series, 60 Minutes visits with Jack Andraka, and Sir Anthony Hopkins fanboys over Breaking Bad.
