The second annual Reaper Awards descended onto the historic Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood on Tuesday, October 12th, in high fashion as the hotel was packed to celebrate the best horror titles released over the last year on DVD and Blu-Ray.
The Reaper Awards were hosted by Dread Central’s own fearless leader, Steve “Uncle Creepy” Barton, and the awards themselves (The Grimmys) are given out as part of a collaborative effort between Dread and Home Media Magazine to put the spotlight on genre titles which mainstream award shows generally overlook.
On hand for the Reaper Awards was a proverbial “Who’s Who” in the horror genre, including director Darren Lynn Bousman (Mother’s Day), actor Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects), iconic director Tom Holland (the original Fright Night), director Adam Green (Hatchet II), actress Rileah Vanderbilt (Hatchet II), director Neil Marshall (Centurion), actress Axelle Carolyn (Centurion), director Declan O...

Quirky Montrealean filmmaker Maude Michaud's new documentary project Bloody Breasts: Women, Feminism & Horror will ask questions like Is horror a genre that can only be enjoyed by men?. Does it still serve to reinforce desired gender roles/societal stereotypes? and Can a woman call herself a feminist And still enjoy horror films? Fast on the heels of women-in-horror documentaries Pretty Bloody by Donna Davies and Welcome To My Darkside by Reyna Young, Bloody Breasts promises to fill in the gaps in the academic literature by providing a comprehensive outlook at female artists and consumers of horror...
Recently interviewed for the film at the FantAsia film Festival in Montreal were Alicia Conway (director of the short film Rite); Devi Snively (director of Confederate Zombie Massacre); and Kier-La Janisse (founder of the Cinemuerte Festival).

As if the first wave of films wasn’t good enough the badasses over at Fantastic Fest have announced the 2nd wave of films and they have outdone themselves. With the additions of movie like ‘Zombieland’, ‘Survival of the Dead’, ‘Daybreakers’ and ‘Yatterman’ this is will be one of the best festivals of the year! Check out the announcement below:
Features:
Daybreakers (dir. Michael Spierig & Peter Spierig, 2009, USA)
The year is 2019. A mysterious plague has swept over the earth, transforming the majority of the world’s population into vampires. Humans are now an endangered, second-class species – forced into hiding as they are hunted and farmed for vampire consumption to the brink of extinction. It’s all up to Edward Dalton, a vampire researcher who refuses to feed on human blood, to perfect a blood substitute that might sustain vampires and spare the few remaining humans.

More highlights from the Great White North's incredible film festival!
The world is an unfair place. How else to describe how a guy like Buddy Giovinazzo can make a film like Life is Hot in Cracktown, a year ago, and have it be rejected by every major film festival the world over, despite its being goddamn genius? We saw the international premier on Monday, and while not a horror film, it is the kind of movie fans of the genre need to embrace. Like Aronofsky’s adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr’s Requiem for a Dream, Life is Hot in Cracktown chronicles the lives of a number of lost souls and their crushing slide from streets to the gutter, and from the gutter, into hell. Unlike Requiem for a Dream, Giovinazzo’s film is not filled with pretty teen starlets, and does little to glorify hardcore drug addiction. Requiem for...

Ok, ok…so everyone and their brother are going to write about their experience this past weekend – oh and to clear it up – I am referring to our just-wrapped Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors – located in my great hometown of New York City!
I’ve blogged a few times but never was it about me me Me! So I have that right, don’t I?
Well, it all started when I was born – only kidding of course. It all started on Friday night which was a real bummer for me as I looked forward to the event All fucking week and then found out that the doors were not to open until 5pm. And to make matters worse, I had my short films scheduled at 6. Conflict right there and then. You see, I was lucky enough to (for lack of a better word) “anchor” the webcast and doing that is just...

Director Alicia Conway didn’t always love movies. In fact, growing up most of her interests revolved around the worlds of art, photography, and psychology. It wasn’t until later that Conway realized that the medium of film allowed her to incorporate all the things she loved into one art form. From there, she was hooked.
Conway said that, “When I was growing up, I always loved horror fiction and really screwed up stuff like Vc Andrews books. I didn’t really get into the horror film genre until I got into film school in Florida. I got my first taste during a horror marathon with Ben (her husband, Ben Rock, is also a film director), and I just fell in love.”
“There is something about the aesthetics of horror films that I totally appreciate,” added Conway. “I find something about exploring that part of the human psyche very fascinating.

A young girl faces an unsettling evil in "Rite," which plays the Sundance Film Festival Jan. 16. Here's the lowdown: Synopsis... A young girl faces an unsettling ritual. The Concept... Rite began as an argument in 2002. Writer/director Alicia Conway was watching a documentary made by her friend Keren Markuze entitled "The 8th Day," about two Jewish couples struggling with whether or not to circumcise their unborn sons.
