Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week, IndieWire published our list of the 100 Best Movies of the 2010s.
Of course, any list of 100 movies barely scratches the surface of a decade that saw the release of thousands (and thousands), and a ton of special films — especially of the contested or obscure varieties — didn’t make the cut. And, so with that in mind, we asked our panel of film critics to pick the one overlooked film of the past 10 years that they most hope people will find, rediscover, or reconsider in the future.
“Advantageous” (Jennifer Phang)

There’s always been an abundance of beautifully insightful films that miss the general audience conversation but few have been as audaciously assured as director Jennifer Phang’s 2015 feature “Advantageous.

This film may not be anything new, but it is not anything very funny, either. “The Secret Lives of Dorks” should be praised for its honesty at the same time that it is condemned for its lack of originality. It is exactly what one would expect and is, therefore, completely absent originality. On the other hand, anybody who watches it has no right to complain about the crude humor because, well, they should have seen it coming. Gaelan Connell does the heavy lifting in this film (not to over emphasize the concept of “heavy”) as Payton, a dork of amazing proportions. Perhaps channeling the original dork of dorks, Napoleon Dynamite (played by Jon Heder), Connell goes about his business...

Freaks and Geeks was the first TV show to acknowledge what everyone with a high school diploma already knew: that there are deep taxonomies of nerds that defy the conventional, lazy stereotype of high-water pants and taped-together glasses. A high school population is a Venn diagram intersecting heavy metal nerds, academic nerds, sci-fi nerds, sports nerds, comedy nerds—any subject that inspires obsession has its socially awkward enthusiasts. The Secret Lives of Dorks, starring Jim Belushi, is, well, the Jim Belushi of high-school romantic comedies: indifferent, kind of exhausted. At one point, a jock actually tapes a "kick me" sign to the back of a cookie-cutter lady-Urkel. Gaelan Connell is Payton, a flamboyantly bespectacled nerd—son of Belushi, the school'...

Title: The Secret Lives of Dorks Director: Salomé Breziner Starring: Gaelan Connell, Vanessa Marano, Beau Mirchoff, Riley Voelkel, Jim Belushi, Jennifer Tilly “The Secret Lives of Dorks” tries to be satirical and plausible and fails at both, but it does manage to conjure up just enough heart to keep the experience from being a total grating loss. Payton (Gaelan Connell) is a dork, but for some reason he thinks he can get with Carrie (Riley Voelkel), a popular cheerleader. Making the cross clique romance even less likely is the fact that Carrie’s got a boyfriend, Clark (Beau Mirchoff), and he’s the captain of the football team. But this still doesn’t [ Read More ]

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Want to know how to make your own health potion from Diablo? The Gaming Gourmet will teach you how.
Diablo gets a comic, more video game food, and kids getting trapped in games on your TV screen in this week's non-gaming game news.
If the wait for Diablo III is absolutely killing you, then maybe you should check out the first two issues of the miniseries running at DC Comics. The plot synopsis sounds like typical hero's journey stuff, but you can never tell what kind of Easter eggs and tidbits DC and Blizzard might have put their heads together to seed throughout the story.
Here's the synopsis of the current issue:
Travel to Diablo's Dreadlands courtesy of DC Comics
Written by Aaron Williams; Art and cover by Joseph Lacroix
The Dreadlands are being corrupted by madness, causing its victims to open their flesh and lash out at friend and foe alike.

Watch out, boys! Vanessa is on the prowl for a new boyfriend!
Has Vanessa Hudgens finally moved on from former flame Zac Efron? It certainly sounds like it to us! At a screening of her new movie Beastly on Weds. Mar. 2, Vanessa admitted that she’s single but looking. When asked if she was dating anyone at the moment, Vanessa said, “No, but I’m taking numbers.”
Is Vanessa over her relationship with Zac, or does she simply want someone to fill his place? Lately, it sounds like Vanessa is trying hard to move on without her ex-boyfriend. A source told us at Hollywood Life that Vanessa’s new butterfly tattoo was a big sign that the actress is getting over Zac, saying it represents how Vanessa is growing up. Not only that, but Vanessa has recently been spotted with Hollywood hotties like Josh Hutcherson and Gaelan Connell. If she...

Vanessa and Gaelan get tight at Madison Square Garden– doesn’t it look like they are flirting up a storm? Tell us what you think!
Watch out Zac Efron! It looks like you ex-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens is spending time with other guys. Vanessa went to the Knicks-Hornets game at NYC’s Madison Square Garden on March 2 with her Bandslam co-star Gaelan Connell – and the two look they had a blast goofing around together.
Sure, to others, this “friends” date may look innocent enough. But in 2008, Vanessa, 22, and Gaelan, 21, locked lips while filming Bandslam. Could they be rekindling their on-screen romance?
Zac, 23, and Vanessa reportedly split because Vanessa wanted some time to be single before they got serious about spending the rest of their lives together. We avoided watching the movie Bandslam for a long time. We assumed it was another watered down 'tween-fest. We thought it was just sequel number 22 in the High School Musical franchise, with an above average number of beautiful high school students singing mediocre, syrupy pop songs.
We found out this week we were sadly mistaken. Bandslam is the perfect combo of Pretty in Pink, Say Anything, and The Breakfast Club for this generation. Director Todd Graff (who got his start as one of he kids on The Electric Company in the '70s) was clearly possessed by the spirit of John Hughes.
Gaelan Connell, who plays Will Burton, is as lovable as John Cusack's Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything. He's believable as the social reject with a sad past trying desperately to belong and learning how to win over the girl. His video tribute to Sa5m, packs as...

Now we've heard some crazy casting rumors during the time we've been running Dread Central, but today's may just take the cake. What do model, musician, and actor Adam Bertrand; High School Musical alum Ashley Tisdale; and singing sensation Lady Gaga have in common? Read on to find out!
According to TMZ all three could be appearing in the next 3D death-cheating extravaganza from Warner Brothers currently known as Final Destination 5. Bertrand is signed to Warner Bros. Records (so there's that connection) and is said to have "conquered" his audition with Tisdale. Just keep in mind that Bertrand doesn't have the best track record in regards to holding onto roles--he was slated to play the lead in 2009's 'Bandslam' but was replaced last-minute by Gaelan Connell.

Chicago – Movies with teenagers that don’t talk down to them and presents them in lovable, realistic ways are so few and far between that seeing one can almost send chills up a cynical critic’s spine. I don’t mean to over-praise what is ultimately a light film but with all the junk aimed at kids nowadays, the incredibly smart “Bandslam” practically feels like a revelation. Those of you buying “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” should be forced to pick this one up too. You won’t regret it.

It.s official! 2009 has been the highest-grossing summer ever at the box office. A record-shattering $4.17 billion worth of movie tickets were sold. But Hollywood also showed quality this summer which made me ask the question . is it Oscar season yet?
Here.s my list of the Top 10 Best Movies of summer 2009, from No. 10 to the best of the best!
10. .Bandslam. . I walked out of the screening for this film in a jubilant mood. There.s the fun ensemble cast featuring Vanessa Hudgens, Aly Michalka, Gaelan Connell, and Lisa Kudrow, and a charming story about a group of teens wanting to win the battle of the bands. It.s the next best thing we have to a .John Hughes. movie.
9. .The Hangover. . The highest-grossing R-rated comedy is also one of the funniest films this year! The film is like .Citizen Kane. for the raunch-fest genre.

Some movies just come along and put a smile on your face. “Bandslam” is one of those films. It is a smart teen comedy that doesn’t talk down to its audience or have its young performers act like they are in their twenties. This is a delicate balancing act that is quite hard to pull off. Will Burton (Gaelan Connell) is your typical alienated kid. He is picked on incessantly in high school. The only thing that gets him through the day is his love of David Bowie’s music. He also has a fondness for classic rock groups like Velvet Underground and The Ramones. His mother (Lisa Kudrow) tries to comfort him in his pain with little luck. That is until she informs him they are moving from Cincinnati to New Jersey.

Summit Entertainment's new Bandslam flick finally hit the the theaters this weekend, and after watching it, I must say, I felt good. It was a feel good type of movie that brought a good mixture of comedy, drama, and inspiration. Oh, and Summit also dropped their 2nd "Twilight Saga :New Moon" movie trailer just before the movie started. All you "Twilighters" out there are going to love the 2nd "New Moon" trailer. It was way more better than the first one. It's really good. Now, back to "Bandslam." The plot pretty much revolved around a high school kid named Will Burton (Gaelan Connell). He moves from Connecticut to New Jersey with his mom who has found a new job. He's had sort of a rough time in his old school...

In the new movie Bandslam, in theaters today, Lisa Kudrow, plays the loving mother of a teen outcast (newcomer Gaelan Connell) with a passion for music. He writes frequently to David Bowie (whose cameo will leave you smiling); he finds himself managing a band fronted by a former cheerleader (Phil of the Future's Alyson Michalka) and breaking into Cbgb with a fellow misfit (High School Musical's Vanessa Hudgens). We recently sat down with Kudrow, 46, and keeping with the spirit of the film, administered an EW Pop Culture Personality Test. We uncovered a phobia, a workout routine that we can totally get behind, and a one-night only karaoke performance we wish had been taped. Entertainment Weekly: The person you wrote a fan letter to when you were young? Lisa Kudrow: When I was really young, I may have sent a fan letter to [The Monkees'] Davy Jones. And recently? I got...

Summit Entertainment is smart to put a trailer for New Moon (the Twilight sequel) in front of Bandslam, knowing it will bring in fanatical teenagers who might have otherwise ignored this buzz-deficient movie. And if those young ladies stay past the trailers, they'll find that Bandslam is actually worth their time, a spry teen melodrama whose refusal to pander to its audience is refreshing.
Will Burton (Gaelan Connell), who looks like a nerdier Shia Labeouf, has just moved to Lodi, N.J., with his mom (Lisa Kudrow), and is dismayed to find that high school here is just like it was in Cincinnati, the only difference being that the bullies here don't know about him yet. His love of old-school indie rock makes him different. His frequent fan letters to David Bowie (which serve as the film's diary-like narration) are a little odd, too.
But he's soon befriended by Sam...

Bandslam
Directed by: Todd Graff
Cast: Gaelan Connell, Aly Michalka, Vanessa Hudgens, Lisa Kudrow
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: August 14, 2009
Plot: A new kid (Connell) transfers to a very musical high school and helps an underdog band prepare for the regional rock competition called “Bandslam.”
Who’s It For? Anyone currently in a transitional phase from High School Musical to Twilight. So middle schoolers. Actual high schoolers wouldn’t be caught dead seeing this movie.
Expectations: From a glimpse at the casting, this looked like it would be a rock-ier version of something like High School Musical. An easy assumption, I know.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Gaelan Connell as Will Burton: With early Bob Dylan’s messy curls and a face similar to Paul Rust, (the only guy who actually loved Beth Cooper), Connell droops around in his hoodie like an apprentice of Michael Cera. Annoyingly, he violates...

Welcome to another dog day afternoon, or evening or morning or whatever it is where you are, here at the Reject Report. The big question this week concerns the box office fortunes of last weekend's box office champ G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra... which might end up being referred to as the Fall of the Cobra by the end of the weekend. It's pretty much a given that there will be a significant dropoff from last week, the question is how much. Will it be a 60 percent dropoff? I think that could be what is in store, because I really don't see a lot of legs for this movie. I think most of the people who wanted to see it have already gone, and so a very big dropoff is likely to happen. I'm pretty sure the haul will be somewhere around $24 million. The big question is whether this haul will indeed be enough...

Chicago – Following Lisa Kudrow’s wildly successful, 10-year run as Phoebe Buffay on 238 episodes of “Friends,” the 46-year-old Encino, Calif. native is hardly the spacey blonde from 1997’s “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion”. In fact, she earned her degree in psychobiology from Vassar College in New York.
But since her Emmy-winning “Friends” fame and in speaking with her today, you now get the sense that she’s splitting her time between TV work (i.e. with 27 episodes of “Web Therapy” over the past year), various films and perhaps most important mothering.

It’s official: rock ’n’ roll has been tamed. It must be if Walden Media (see: the Narnia movies), the movie company known for its family-values agenda (that is, one that adheres to the stereotypical narrow ideas about what constitutes both “family” and “values”) is taking it on. That’s how you get a rock ’n’ roll movie this calculated for sweet, feel-good blandness. And not the rock ’n’ roll kind of feel-good, either, unless you think the Jonas Brothers rock hard. Instantly forgettable but inoffensive, this is the tale of misfit teen Will Burton (the Shia Labeouf-esque newcomer Gaelan Connell), who moves to a new high school that isn’t quite so much like “Guantanamo with a lunch period” as the old one, makes new friends, and starts managing a high-school band in preparation for the titular competition. Adolescent bumps in the road are struck, of course, but...

With his shaggy mop of hair, pasty complexion, and nonexistent chin, Bandslam star Gaelan Connell actually looks like a real high-school geek: it would take more than the removal of glasses and the letting down of hair to transform this ugly duckling into a swan. His appearance helps make the teen comedy Bandslam into even more of a wish-fulfillment fantasy for pop-culture geeks: Think of it as I Was A Teenage Pitchfork Hipster. What music snob wouldn’t want to buy into the beautiful, ridiculous fiction that extensive knowledge of music history makes scrawny boy-teens irresistible to cool, sexy, musically ...

While Twilight actress Ashley Greene threatens to sue anyone posting nude pictures of her online, co-star Taylor Lautner has no shame over flashing the flesh in the latest hot footage for upcoming sequel New Moon.
Lautner bulked up for the film, gaining 30lbs, and the evidence is here in this 14-second teaser included above. We've already seen several pictures of him topless, flaunting his newly beefed-up pecs and abs.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon sees Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) grow close to Lautner's character Jacob Black when her vampire lover Edward (Robert Pattinson) disappears.
Jacob is a member of the Quileute, a tribe whose members can transform into giant wolves and who are ancestral enemies of the vampires. Joining Lautner in the 'wolf pack' are Native American actors Chaske Spencer, Bronson Pelletier, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman.

Movies about teenagers and music normally feature two motivations. The characters are either singing and dancing for love or fame. What sets the new movie .Bandslam. apart from other teen films is its pure, unmitigated love for music.
Indeed, music becomes a central character in this new film from Summit Entertainment, the house that .Twilight. built. But the genius behind .Bandslam. is director and co-writer Todd Graff (.Camp.). Having worked in Broadway and performed as a back-up singer for such artists as James Taylor and Carly Simon, Graff really knows what he.s talking about.
