"The Chris Rock Show" was one of the edgiest, most uproarious variety shows on television. Powered by the pop cultural shockwave of his 1996 HBO stand-up special "Bring the Pain," Rock had attained the inconvenient-truth-telling stature of greats like Richard Pryor and George Carlin. He excoriated the white media for its condescending praise of the "well-spoken" Colin Powell and expressed hilarious disbelief that the crack-smoking Marion Barry could get re-elected Mayor of Washington D.C.. Suddenly, my mom knew that "salad tossing" was a prison euphemism for analingus.
HBO wisely snagged the comic for "The Chris Rock Show," which premiered on February 7, 1997, with the clear intent of pissing people off. His first guest was Johnnie Cochran nearing the end of his O.J. Simpson trial victory lap. I'll never forget Rock's reaction to the attorney's savvy quip that he prefers to defend "No Jays" instead of "O.J.s." He shot a...

The Signal Hill wrongful death movie reunites Jamie Foxx with Ray director Taylor Hackford.
Jamie Foxx will play wrongfully convicted Black Panther Party leader Elmer 'Geronimo' Pratt in the upcoming Johnnie Cochran wrongful death legal film Signal Hill. The film stars Anthony Mackie and will be directed by Taylor Hackford, who directed himself and Foxx into Oscars for the film Ray. The screenplay was written by David MacMillan. Signal Hill plans to go into production in January.
Johnny Cochran is best known as the lawyer who couldn’t fit gloves on O.J. Simpson. The legal strategy acquitted the former football star of the 1995 murder trial of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. In 1981, Cochran worked on the wrongful death case of college American football star Ron Settles. Signal Hill will centre on Cochran’s efforts to get to the bottom of the case.

“The People v Oj Simpson” masterminds Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander did a remarkable job of telling an accurate story. But they had to take a few dramatic liberites, and talked to TheWrap about what they were. For example: That joke from Johnnie Cochran (Courtney B. Vance) about Michael Jackson being afraid of lime green. “I think we made it up because we thought it was funny,” Karaszewski told TheWrap. “We needed a shorthand to say even before the Oj trial, Johnnie had his hands full.” Also Read: What 'The People v Oj Simpson' Got Wrong (Photos) Added Alexander: “Larry,...

“It’s that time of year….” for another big holiday themed comedy. We’ve had a big family yuletide mix of laughs and tears with Almost Christmas, that’s, ahem, almost a month old now. That bit of tinsel joined a long list of similar movie comedies like Love The Coopers and a film now considered an annual viewing tradition for many, National Lampoon’S Christmas Vacation. Yes, they’re all holiday hijinks with the family, but that other family is largely ignored. I’m speaking of the “workplace family”, the folks you bond with while “on the job” (many “workaholics” spent more time with them than their spouses and kids). Ah, the studios got the hint, so the newest movie present under the big multiplex tree is all set to be unwrapped. Looks like we’re all invited to the big Office Christmas Party.

Chicago – The raucous party movie has become a reliable staple in movieland, and now a production tackles the holiday soiré, and all that can go wrong. “Office Christmas Party” is co-directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, who also gave us “Blades of Glory” and “The Switch.”
The story features T.J. Miller and Jennifer Aniston as the brother and sister who has inherited their father’s computer business. Miller runs the Chicago office, which is under performing. Aniston’s character wants to shut the branch down, but Miller thinks an epic holiday party will convince a potential client (Courtney B. Vance) to sign on and save the company, and enlists the aide of officemates portrayed by Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn and Kate McKinnon. The movie is filled with wild and funny takes on celebrating the holiday ritual, and shows off the city of Chicago in all of its winter glory.

They want an epilogue," Vance joked. "They want another episode!" But it was becoming Cochran that Vance felt to be the most difficult part of his job. "I think trying to figure out how to get in," he explained to G. "He was such a...

Jimmy Kimmel's Emmys joke about Johnnie Cochran has enraged a famous lawyer Johnny mentored. Carl Douglas lashed out at Kimmel, who talked smack on O.J.'s real lawyer after Courtney B. Vance won Best Actor in a Limited Series. Kimmel said, "I have to believe Johnnie Cochran is smiling up at us tonight." The idea that Cochran went to hell for repping O.J. was too much for Douglas to bear, saying, "That...

"If your show doesn't have a dragon or a white Bronco in it," warned host Jimmy Kimmel at the beginning of the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast, "Go home now!"
He wasn't entirely kidding. While the broadcast hardly lacked for entertaining or surprising moments, the horse race (or Bronco versus dragon race, if you prefer) between The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and Game of Thrones remained a recurring theme throughout the evening. "This must be very strange for you," Kimmel kidded Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark, who was in attendance.

Sunday night brought some vindication, after a very tough year, for the House of Murdoch. FX cleaned up at the Emmys with its critically acclaimed miniseries, “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” The docudrama won major prizes for Courtney B. Vance, who played real-life Simpson defender Johnnie Cochran, as well as Sarah Paulson, who played put-upon prosecutor Marcia Clark. FX is of course part of 21st Century Fox, the media empire built by 85-year-old Rupert Murdoch, who spent the summer dealing with the sexual harassment allegations against former Fox News chief Roger Ailes. Sipowicz and Simone, together again! Franz and Smits, together again! Sipowicz and Simone, together again! Dennis Franz, coming out of retirement, maybe?!?!?! Dennis Franz saying "Ipsa this!" 23 years after TV viewers first met Andy Sipowicz?!?!!? What, you want me to talk about the actual Emmy results, rather than the unexpected and wonderful reunion of my beloved NYPD Blue that occurred right before the end of the telecast? Okay, fine. Though Frranz and Smits' appearance to present the final award — Outstanding Drama Series, to Emmy steamroller Game of Thrones, which tied its own record from last year for the most Emmys for a series in a single year with 12 (many of them presented last week at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies) — provided one last surprising and delightful moment in an Emmy telecast largely full of them. Yes, GoT mostly dominated for its uneven but at times brilliant sixth season. Yes, FX's The People v.

Peak TV finally got the Primetime Emmy Awards that it deserves.
Sure, “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” repeated their wins Sunday in the top drama and comedy series categories (giving HBO its second year of winning both). And legends like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jeffrey Tambor continued their trophy dominance.
But underneath that, a whole new generation of fresh faces picked up their first-ever Emmys on Sunday night. Actors and actresses that seemed like long-shots just a few years ago were instead embraced by a large voting body that appears ready to embrace the new talent earning raves in this new golden era of Peak TV. Superstars and newbies alike hit the stage, and even the surprise winners were hard to argue.

Jimmy Kimmel returned for a second time as host of the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 18, and he was sharper than ever for the big night.
He began the ceremony with a pre-taped sketch, which involved him trying to catch a ride to the show with James Corden, the “Modern Family” crew and Jeb Bush, among others. Upon finally making his way to the stage, he handed Jeffrey Tambor an Emmy, saying “that will save 22 minutes” from the night’s show. (Coincidently, Tambor did take home the prize for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series). Kimmel then kicked off his hilarious monologue, which involved poking fun at the cast of “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” Mark Burnett, Maggie Smith and others.

Now that's what we call an impassioned acceptance speech! After watching his co-stars Sterling K. Brown and Sarah Paulson take home Emmy gold at the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Courtney B. Vance got the chance to make a speech of his own when he was awarded Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his work as Johnnie Cochran in FX's stunning The People v. O.J. Simpson. And boy, he did not disappoint. With an infectious energy that you could nearly feel through the TV screen, he rattled off the names of the producers and touchingly mentioned his Als-stricken mother before getting to the big moment: His dedication to his wife, American Horror Story star Angela Bassett. The crime of the century became a media circus, with no angle hidden -- yet behind what we saw on TV was even more conflict and consternation. This eight-hour miniseries is a beautifully constructed recreation with excellent casting, even though its O.J. doesn't remind us much of the original. It's highly absorbing stuff to anyone who lived through it. The People v. O.J. Dci John Luther (Idris Elba) speaks in terse, staccato sentences, as if to match the impression his heavy gait and muscular frame leave on his interlocutors: “Aight mate?” the owner of a gangland watering hole asks him in the fourth installment of “Luther.” “Lookin’ a bit militant there.”
Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), by contrast, speaks in stem-winding, breathless paragraphs, holding his reedy figure still as if to conserve energy for his acumen: “You’re clearly acclimatized to never getting to the end of a sentence,” he tells Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) in “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.” “We’ll get along splendidly.”
This battle of British detectives, in which we might include “The Night Manager”‘s Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), recruited by British intelligence to infiltrate the inner circle of an international arms dealer (Hugh Laurie), points to a few of the complicating factors in the race for Outstanding...

It was early in the development of The Americans that the head of FX told the show’s creator what his series was really about — and was absolutely right. Joe Weisberg had planned to generate drama in the fake marriage between deep cover spies Philip and Elizabeth Jennings on ideological grounds: Philip was beginning to feel too comfortable in America, while Elizabeth stayed true to her Mother Russian roots. Then in a meeting with FX executives, FX CEO John Landgraf proposed adding another layer to things. “John had the idea that it would be very powerful and effective if Philip were really more in love with Elizabeth than Elizabeth were with Philip,” Weisberg said. “And you know how central that has become to the whole story of the show and the marriage. (The ideological argument) seemed like a good solid idea for what would create tension in the marriage, but...

The Emmys are notorious for two things: repeat winners and unpredictability. Some races are wrapped up long in advance, such as when “Modern Family” won five years in a row between 2010 – 2014 or Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ ongoing streak of Outstanding Actress in a Comedy wins.
But then there are the surprises, and no other awards show features as many wild winners as the Emmys. No one saw Regina King winning last year (for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie), just as few experts predicted Benedict Cumberbatch would win the year before (for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie). Many more races were contentious down to the end, including last year’s “Veep” and “Game of Thrones” series wins.
These are the races where we may not see the same ol’ faces in the winners’ circle. They’re the races that are too close to call, with just a...

Over the weekend, the Television Academy handed out the Creative Arts Emmys — i.e., the awards not quite glamorous to be squeezed into this coming Sunday's 68th Primetime Emmy Awards telecast on ABC. Lots of interesting things happened, including Game of Thrones picking up 9 awards (the Creative Arts includes most of the technical categories), Crazy Ex-Girlfriend sharing an award of choreography but losing both song categories for which it was eligible (to Diane Warren's song from The Hunting Ground and the Jessica Jones theme music), and more. But the one that got my attention the most — and convinced me to finally change the way I do my annual Emmy preview column — was Character Actress Margo Martindale's repeat win for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama for her work on The Americans. I love both The Americans and Character Actress Margo Martindale, but she was in one scene all season,...

TV: now more than ever! With online-streaming platforms firing on all cylinders, cable upstarts making their name in the game, and networks clawing at one another for viewership, there's an embarrassment of riches on the tube — and this year's lineup of Emmy nominees fully reflects that. In terms of sheer numbers, it's a lot to manage. Squeezing in all the Best Picture Oscar nominees every year? Solidly doable. Committing to two dozen full seasons of television? We hope you have stock in Visine and aren't big on that whole "sleep" thing.

IndieWire’s Vote: “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”
As the great Ed Harris once said, “You gotta take a side.” And this year, you’ve got to choose between “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and “Fargo.” Sure, “The Night Manager” was a solid throwback thriller and “Roots” justified its reimagining with one helluva run (while “American Crime” remains a dangerously misguided acting exercise), but these two standout entries would be easy choices if they weren’t competing against each other. Noah Hawley’s second season was even bolder than his first, but we’ve got to stick with our TCA pals and back “The People.” Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski’s anthology did what many deemed impossible by making O.J. relevant again, and the craft applied to...

Editor Adam Penn had no idea what to expect when he hired on to FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” To him, “The Trial of the Century” was a caricatured media circus. But he trusted director Ryan Murphy after collaborating on several series, most recently “American Horror Story.” The experience not only earned him an Emmy nom for the pilot (“From the Ashes of Tragedy”), but was also a revelation concerning the personal lives of these larger than life players.
“The biggest challenge was taking people that everybody’s familiar with and reshaping it a little bit so you’re not necessarily thinking Cuba Gooding Jr., you’re thinking O.J.,” said Penn, who splits his time as a screenwriter and co-producer on another buzzy Emmy series, “Mr. Robot.”
So Penn stood back and got out of the way of the performances and camera movement and relied on invisible cutting.

It was a good day for the cast and crew of FX's stellar The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. The show has earned a whopping 22 Emmy nominations for its captivating recreation of the trial of the century, coming in second only to Game of Thrones' 23, with much of the limited series' cast finding themselves in the running to take home some serious hardware come September. And star Courtney B. Vance, who took our breath away as famed defense attorney Johnnie Cochran, couldn't be any happier. "I had to prepare, and I always prepare for either eventuality, but we really, really knew when we did it that we were in the middle of something special," Vance told E! News just after...
