“Do all of you remember the name Red Ribbon Army?” That’s the first of many lines of expository dialogue in “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” the latest animated action-fantasy adaptation-extension of the mega-popular “Dragon Ball” manga comics.
That opening line of voiceover narration also inadvertently prepares viewers for how convoluted the movie soon becomes.
Some tablesetting dialogue explains who the Red Ribbon Army are (bad guys) and why they’re back. The son of the Red Pharmaceutical Company’s founder, Magenta (voiced by Volcano Ota in the Japanese-language version and Charles Martinet in the English dub), wants to take over the world. But soon enough, this fairly straightforward beat-em-up spectacular, which pits heroic aliens against villainous robots, becomes a celebration of “Dragon Ball,” a decades-old anime institution.
Fans of both the “Dragon Ball” and “Dragon Ball Z” anime will probably be the ideal audience for references to the Frieza...

Telltale Games is a busy studio. While hard at work on a Game of Thrones title, the game developer is also taking on a much more light-hearted franchise-Borderlands. The company is putting its story-first gameplay mentality to good use in Tales from the Borderlands, the latest entry in the franchise created by Gearbox Software. The series is already known for its irreverent humor and impossibly high number of firearms, but Telltale is taking the shooting franchise in a more narratively focused direction. Set after Borderlands 2, Tales puts players in control of Rhys (voiced by Troy Baker) and Fiona (voiced by...

Telltale Games’ upcoming Tales From The Borderlands just got a lot more nerdy, as today the company revealed which talents will be lending their pipes to the title.
Sam Witwer, perhaps best known for his work in the American version of Being Human and his voicing of Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will voice one of the main protagonists of the game, Rhys. Joining Witer will be Nerdist founder and @midnight host Chris Hardwick, who will portray Vaughn, a “meek, mousy accountant for the Hyperion Corporation” and Rhy’s best friend.
Additional talent featured in Tales From The Borderlands include Patrick Warburton (Family Guy), Nolan North (Uncharted series) and several returning members from the Borderlands series cast, including Dameon Clarke as Handsome Jack.
Without doubt, Telltale Games’ narrative-driven experiences have typically featured excellent voice casting, and Tales From The Borderlands doesn’t appear to change that. All...

While it's our general policy to not report on Kickstarter projects for various reasons, Kiss the Devil in the Dark, the new and wrapped feature from the creators of the award-winning short An Evening with My Comatose Mother, is just simply too good to pass up.
The flick's in post, needs your help, and we think it's something you absolutely need to see.
Starring Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth), Dameon Clarke, and Amrita Acharia, Kiss the Devil in the Dark is co-directed and produced by Jonathan Martin and Rebecca Martin from a script by the latter and revolves around the character of Marcus (Clarke), a powerful sorcerer who, desperate to save his dying wife, makes a deal with the demon Dagon (Jones) to save her soul. Dagon, however, has more in mind for Marcus than just a simple exchanging of souls. With seemingly no other choice, Marcus accepts, thus catapulting him...

Director: Luke Ricci.
Writer: Luke Ricci.
Already released through a limited run last summer How to be a Serial Killer is a 2009 DVD October release that blends comedy, some horror, and solid writing to show the life of a serial killer over the course of several days. Really a spoof of infomercials How to be a Serial Killer from writer, and director, Luke Ricci is a fun watch despite some limiting production values (low budget). A great addition to horror genre How to be a Serial Killer is a Netflix must for those wanting something off the beaten path.
The film centers around Mike played by Dameon Clarke and Matthew Gray Gubler as Bart who form a dysfunctional, symbiotic relationship as they terrorize the unfortunate folks of Santa Clarita, California. Shot documentary style the film shifts back and forth between Mike the seminar leader and the and often funny actions of Bart.

Many of us are fascinated by serial killers--what makes them tick, what makes them do what they do and, in our darker moments, whether we could ever carry out the gruesome acts they undertake. Sure, everyone has thought about killing someone, even if it is only for a fleeting moment, but how many of us could actually do it?
And what if, one day, someone walked into your life who saw a spark of himself lurking behind your eyes, and offered to help you recognize that darkness within yourself? Could you do it? With dark humor and a decidedly tongue-in-cheek approach, How To Be A Serial Killer (opening in select bookings this summer; go here for details) examines exactly those questions.
Moving seamlessly through a variety of styles, writer/director Luke Ricci brings us the story of Bart (Criminal Minds’ Matthew Gray Gubler), a fumbling video-store clerk/slacker who is...

Fango got word about a pair of independent features spotlighting different kinds of crazy heading for big screens in the coming months. One, Morgan J. Freeman’s Homecoming, is played straight, while Luke Ricci’s How To Be A Serial Killer is pitched as a gruesome satire.
In Homecoming, Freeman (no relation to the similarly named actor) returns to the bad-girl territory he previously explored in American Psycho II: All American Girl. Mischa Barton stars as Shelby, a small-town girl and former homecoming queen who’s just a tad upset when her former beau Mike (Matt Long) comes home from college for Christmas break with his new girlfriend Elizabeth (The Hills Have Eyes II’s Jessica Stroup). Shelby wants Mike back for herself, and embarks on a campaign of terror to get Elizabeth out of the picture. Paper Street Films opens Homecoming in New York and La on July 17, and...

Many exhibitors were also kind enough to show us movie promos, while others coldly showed us the door (Lesbian Vampire Killers, I’m looking at you). The most promising show previews were easily Night of the Demons and Clive Barker’s Dread, with plenty of new projects being announced. Check out our full Afm '08 coverage here.
