I thought funding was Selma was already as good as secured? Lee Daniels is Still reportedly looking for money to get production underway on the Civil Rights-set drama, which already has much of its core cast attached (Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, David Oyelowo, Ray Winstone, Cedric the Entertainer, Lenny Kravitz). Jackman is said to have even gained 30 pounds for his part as Sheriff Jim Clark, only to lose it to star in Real Steel, when financing for Selma hadn’t come together as expected.
It just reminded me that I have a copy of a draft of the script, which I’ve yet to read, but probably should! There might be reasons why financing is proving to be a bigger challenge than expected. I thought Daniels had officially been accepted into “the club,” with all the success he enjoyed with Precious. For a moment, it seemed he was to become Hollywood’s golden boy,...

And the beat goes on… Lee Daniels continues to sure-up his Selma cast, with some intriguing casting choices. As previously reported on this blog, we already know about Hugh Jackman, Lenny Kravitz and David Oyelowo signing on to star in the film as racist Selma sheriff Jim Clark, civil rights activist Andrew Young, and Mlk Jr himself, respectively;
Now, Daniels revealed to MTV exclusively yesterday that the key roles of President Lyndon Baines Johnson (Lbj) and Ralph Abernathy are set. Liam Neeson will play Lbj, opposite David Oyelowo’s Mlk; and in another somewhat unlikely pick, another comedian, this time, Cedric The Entertainer, will assume the role of Abernarthy.
Ralph Abernathy worked closely with Mlk in planning the Selma marches.
For awhile it was speculated that Robert De Niro might be up for the racist Alabama governor George Wallace role, however Daniels while he’d like to work with De Niro,...

On this day 45 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. led a group of civil rights protesters to the City of St. Jude, a Roman Catholic school on the outskirts of Montgomery, Alabama. The historic march, which started days earlier in the city of Selma, would culminate the next day at the State Capitol Building in Montgomery.
For his next project, "Precious" director Lee Daniels will tell the story of this culminating moment for the American civil rights movement in "Selma." He told MTV in an exclusive interview yesterday that the cast is firming up. The key roles of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and Ralph Abernathy are set. Alabama Governor George Wallace remains unconfirmed, but an offer is out and a deal is waiting to be finalized.

"Precious" director Lee Daniels revealed in an exclusive interview with MTV News that casting is firming up for his next film, "Selma." Liam Neeson and Cedric the Entertainer are both on board in key roles, with the former playing President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the latter playing American civil rights movement leader and Martin Luther King Jr. associate Ralph Abernathy.
"Selma" is set against the backdrop of the civil rights disputes that raged during the 1960s. It is specifically focused on one moment in time in the middle of the decade. Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ostensibly made segregation illegal, local governments in less forward-thinking parts of the country still built barriers designed to defeat black citizens who wished to exercise their constitutional rights.

In a Hugh Jackman interview with NY Mag, I lifted the following:
The awards-giving didn’t quite go exactly the way Jackman would’ve liked, however: “I loved [Precious],” he said. “To me, that was the best movie of the year.” In May, Jackman will begin shooting Precious director Lee Daniels’s Selma — about the 1965 marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama — in which he says he’ll play Jim Clark, the short-tempered Alabama sheriff whose violent arrests of civil-rights protesters got international attention. “You’re the first person I’ve told, so I’m not even sure if I was meant to say that. So there you go, that’s enough trouble for one night,” he told us.
So… after all kinds of speculation, from us, and the rest of the film blogosphere, on what role Jackman would be playing, now we know! As I said in a previous post on the matter,...
